Class of 2023 SF Marcus Adams (CA) Offered

Maybe UCLA because they were also in his top 3, and I’d imagine they still have scholarships available

Syracuse was definitely his best option for reclass; hungry for talent and a chance to win a spot early. NIL wasn’t as attractive I’m sure but this is what happens when rubber hits the road, the money isn’t guaranteed and I bet that’s a shock to a lot of kids.

Re-classing up is just about always a bad idea
Yep, but Kansas has seen both sides of it. Silvio De Sousa graduated HS in December and started playing for Kansas that spring. It took him a couple months to get up to speed but he ended up playing a role on a FF team (we would've played them had we beaten Duke). Obviously the rest of his tenure was shall we say spotty.

Lagerald Vick barely played there as a freshman and was sort of a disappointment until his final season, which he had to end early due to family stuff back home.

Probably if we took Marcus Adams, we may have had a more difficult time signing Donnie Freeman even though Donnie is more a combo forward and Marcus is more an inside/outside scorer. There are only some many scholarships available.

Sometimes things happen for a reason.

True.

Kyle Cuffe also reclassified. Obviously he’s been snakebit with injury stuff but hopefully he sticks with Red and it pays dividends in a year or two.

Would not be surprised if some of the pay for play deals start to fall apart with the IRS ruling. No idea if that’s what happened here, but Kansas’ NiL proposal might have dropped…and now he’s heading back home to UCLA.

Perfectly logical -- makes the most sense, on both counts.

I wonder if Red will try to cap his rosters at 12 going forward so he has an open spot for one of these late defections. It will happen more and more with NIL and transfer pickups -- PT availability changes drastically over the Spring. One less project big is all it would take.

It is a good question. JAB always to seem to have an extra scholarship available. Sometimes he gave a walk-on who had contributed for a couple seasons a one year free ride.

Believe that this year the 13th scholarship (or should say one scholarship) had been held in reserve for the eventually return of Judah Mintz going pro or returning to college. Accepting Kyle Cuffe unexpectedly was an interesting way of using a scholarship to improve the quality of the team’s depth.

NIL donations aren’t tax deductible. Therefore, a lot of donors may decide they need to go a different route with their donations to make it make fiscal sense to them.
It’s the right ruling quite frankly. If the university took control of NIL and then you could donate to them you might get around it.

Doesn't sound like it has anything to do with NIL. Consensus seems to be a few different things all having to do with fit and mental/emotional makeup:
  • Homesickness from moving from CA to KS (probably would've been the case at Cuse too).
  • Had a difficult month of practice. The game was moving too fast for him, which makes sense when you recall that Adams is supposed to be a rising HS senior but is instead practicing with Hunter Dickinson, Dajuan Harris, KJ Adams and others.
  • Bill Self is notoriously tough on guys until they earn his trust, which for some players can take years if it happens at all. He'll let guys play through mistakes if they learn from them, but if they don't they go in the doghouse not unlike how it was for Boeheim and is for other coaches. Self is an intense dude - Remember that he missed the conference and NCAA tournaments because of a heart/stress issue.
  • The breaking point was that the other players didn't feel it was working and told the staff as much. That seems to point to an attitude thing in addition to performance on the court. Sort of an aside here, but the players are the only ones on campus at this time, so if you aren't jelling with them, it can be a very lonely experience and that only exacerbates things especially for a guy a long way from home.
Of course, this is mostly the Kansas perspective, so I'm sure Marcus has his own ideas on why it didn't work out. But it seems like it was a bad fit both ways.
