Yeah, I don't really mean "hater" in a "you're dumb if you dislike his game" kinda way. I guess "doubters" would be a more accurate term and I'd count myself among them. I think those are all fair critiques for where his game currently is.I know it's just an off hand comment and you aren't agreeing, but want to comment before that narrative starts this offseason
Is it hating if you are using actual stats to back up your claims?
JJ is an inefficient offensive player, shaky 3pt shooter, and bad defender.
He's an above average to very good slasher/scorer, but feels like he needs to put up a lot of shots to get those points.
I feel like these are all fair critiques.
Hating would be suggesting JJ should be playing D2 or something.
If I'm being generous, I don't think his shooting ability has to improve a ton for the efficiency to get to an acceptable level. His percentages are actually quite good until you get to the 3 point line. Tweaking the shot diet and making the most of his athleticism on defense would probably turn him into a valuable college player (at least by our standards). I don't think it's impossible but it will require improvements that we haven't really seen much of from him.
Sidenote: Crazy thing that stood out as I looked at our player's on/off splits: in conference play, Jaquan Carlos' net rating was +12.3. Next closest that played real minutes was Lampkin at +7.5. Carlos' +12.3 put him in the 87th percentile in the country.
