You guys are funny. He’s practicing against friendly foam, and we have no idea who or how tall his buddies are….
I don’t quite get the point of the first foam bumb. I get the foam on a stick thing to simulate a shot blocker .. but the initial foam bumb is useless

pretty much...but obviously trying to make it like live action so the first bump would be the defender bumping him as he drives past.

I agree, especially considering how small the perimeter “defender” is in that drill, he should be trying to give Kiyan a solid body check every time. The player guarding Kiyan next season is likely to be 200+ pounds, and trying to knock him off his dribble, without fouling, of course, not graze him as he gets a clear line to the basket.

Kiyan needs to be simulating real game situations as much as he can, unless his goal is making cool Instagram videos.

I doubt Kiyan is lacking in proper preparation for college.

I agree, if his trainer worked with some of the best players in the world, it seems unlikely he’s screwing up Kiyan’s training. :p

I prefer to see reps that simulate actual game situations, instead of just messing around like what they were doing.

That was more like a dunk drill, for conditioning’s sake rather than game simulation.

(Or just to show off.)

That's what they were doing, controlled dribble, getting bumped, drive hard, get a hand in face. It's still training, he does play games too.

Is Kiyan being...underrated entering this season?

Even among Syracuse talking heads. All I hear is how this is Freeman's team. Anthony is almost an afterthought which feels nuts.

I shared this a while back that was his plan all along. Melo will raise a bunch of money (already has) during this period. Year 1 is to help red win more games and year 2 will be to work on getting drafted. That will in turn help with recruiting

Hopefully thereafter, as well.

Not sure if it's been known (I haven't followed closely) but Kiyan says he'll be at SU "two years max".
Haven't seen anything that screams NBA level athlete, but his skills are certainly there. He may be sneaky great. There weren't a ton of expectations (as I recall) for Melo, until the Memphis game. Then we knew!!!! Hopefullly, Kiyan will have that impact as well.
Dad always played within the team, until we needed him to take over. He (statedly) had no immediate NBA expectations, so he just played. I hope young Kiyan is able to suppress his NBA goals and play within himself and the team. He comes from good genes, so I am more than hopeful he will do so.

Carmelo was the consensus number 2 recruit in the country by the time he showed up at Syracuse. The consensus number 1 recruit, Amare Staudamire, went straight to the NBA… Thus leaving “dad” the highest ranked recruit in college basketball.

You weren’t paying attention if you think Carmelo didn’t have high expectations placed on him.

Or, you are recalling incorrectly.

Yep. He and Oak Hill beat LeBron in a highly publicized HS game the year before too. The team came in under the radar dude to collapsing down the stretch the year before and our best player graduated(Shumpert). It was Warrick and Gerry who were the unknowns.

Yeah I'd say team expectations were low but Melo's expecations were sky high - and he exceeded them from the opening tip against Memphis and on.

I was a sophomore on campus when Melo showed up and a freshman the debacle of the year before.

There were low expectations and nowhere near what people here are implying. The expectation was we hope he’s good enough to get us back to the tourney. I remember thinking well maybe tourney this year and all the freshman get older and can make a run their sophomore year. That was it.

Go back through the 90’s and 2000’s and look up the second best high school recruit. No one knows or cares or had any idea to put on big expectations. This was also when the standard was still pretty much for dudes to stay 4 years.

He earned everything and deserves all the credit but no one at least on campus said ok Carmelo it’s on your shoulders. A lot of revisionist history in people looking back.

I agree, nobody said “Carmelo Anthony is going to lead us to a national title.” No freshman ever had before, and we had missed the tournament the year prior… Expectations for the team were moderate, but focused on the freshman class, and development of the sophomores.

But I remember the excitement on this board as Carmelo shot up the rankings after committing. The summer before in 2001, Anthony wound up with a RSCI ranking of 8 in July ‘01 and then continuing to improve to 2nd (with a bunch of lower votes, not anything resembling consensus) after the summer, to even getting a vote as the best recruit, and no votes lower than 2nd by August of ‘02.

By the time that Memphis game came around, I think the general mood was “We know he’s really good, but let’s give him a chance to play before we get too excited.” Then that Memphis game really gave us a taste of what was coming.

People were really excited to get a player as good as Anthony.
