Shady on top for PSU?

That would be beautiful. RU would revert to menaingless status. And PSU would turn into a habitual 6-7 win team. Shady is no doubt a great recruiter, but PSU recruits itself so his impact would be lessened. Unfortunatley for PSU he stinks as a game coach and I'm not sure he could get away with the patsy schedule he plays at RU.

I really hope he takes that job. This is would then be the summary of the Big East.

One original member left from the football conference. And it just lost the one coach, the only coach, that ever made that program relevant in any way.

Consider the obituary written. Funeral is in San Diego, might as well go somewhere nice this time of year.

just a few days ago, twitterland was saying he was not a candidate at all. now they are saying he is the leader.

I think PSU is having a very rude awakening as to the perception v. reality of the coaching opportunity there, as it stands right now.

This just seems so Tom O'Brienesq. Expect a statement that Schiano is taking himself out of the running followed by a contact renewal with a raise from Jersey State at any moment.

I would imagine someone with influence at Penn State brought up the names of past failures for colleges that hired either NFL HCs or NFL Assistants, which may have moved the search onto current college HCs at lesser programs who have had success.

That person of influence probably showed the tape of the 2008 game against SU, and said really? That's where you're going with this hire?

But wait, what about the family atmosphere, who will take care of the kids, who will chop the wood ?

Oh the shame

If Schiano left Rutgers for PSU that would kill RU football. He may not be a good in-game coach but that would be crippling to them and any hope of getting out of the Big East.

unless they went out with big bucks and found a stud.

Do you think they could get a guy like that? Any incoming coach knows they're inheriting an average team that will be playing in the new Conference USA.

If GS leaves, gotta think that with the financial troubles in NJ, there is no way they replace him with anyone that would cost big bucks. Now that's not to say up-and-coming types can't be great hires, but they're certainly more of a gamble. No way they would go get some semi-big name sitting on the sidelines right now.

Potentially 2 problems here:

1. As Townie often eludes to, and various links from nj.com often discuss, there will likely be a lot of red tape involved in Rutgers getting approval to pay above market for a head coach. This would be an interesting test. It's a program that loses money and has not been able to secure its future in a more lucrative conference.

2. To build on that last point, it won't be as easy to get someone to take a Big East job if the BCS moves forward with the plans as heavily rumored. If the BCS only becomes about #1 vs #2, there will be no more "BCS" leagues. There will be leagues who have affiliations with major bowls. Very doubtful that the new Big East will be one of them. And that was the last card that the league had to play.

Thanks again ACC. Hugs and Kisses!

They could be better off. If they hired Addazzio how do they miss a beat? He has recruiting connections in the NE and FLA. And how can anyone be a worse in game HC?

They could be a lot better off but Addazio's next move will be to a power conference. He's already got a Mac job, he won't take a lateral move.

If Schiano left for PSU the recruiting situation for the RU new hire would be daunting to say the least. I would hope SU would benefit.

BE still has, and will continue to have, a BCS bid, so not entirely a "lateral" move. Addazio had a very good season, but with Golden's recruits. I think Addazio still needs to prove himself, but I think he will be very good.

The BCS contract expires in a couple of years. The BCS might move to just having a title game and then conferences would go back to the days of having bowl tie ins. The big east bowl tie ins will be a joke and the conference would never have a chance at a title. it would be the new cusa while the ACC, Big 10, Big 12, SEC and Pac10 will have tie-ins to all the big sexy bowl games.
