Ron Zook at Illinois per local NJ radio. Would be sad to seem him go. While he has given us some stiff competition on the recruiting trail, his rep as a game day coach is mediocre at best. For my two cents I do not see him making the jump.

i think it would be a perfect fit. He will be a hot commodity after the coaching job he did this year. If i were him and I could get into a power conference i would take it. Illinois is a step up from Rutgers.

If he gets hired, they'd be replacing a great recruiter and not-so-great coach with a great recruiter and a not-so-great coach.

Hmm.

If offered he'd be crazy to turn it down. He's reached the ceiling at Rutgers.

Would be hysterical too. Rutgers would finally be getting into the Big Ten... sorta. :rolling:

Shady wants the Penn State job. I can't see him relocating to Champaign-Urbana. He's too rooted on the East Coast.

Maybe Rutgers could pull Urban Meyer away from Ohio State to replace Shady if he leaves

The only Illinois ties that GS has, as far as I know, is that he coached with the Chicago Bears for a short time.

To seal the deal...Illinois will have his helicopter painted Orange and a local wildlife preserve will have to be trashed.

damn it TM, that avatar is wonderful. I need to find a poster of that.

It is a trick picture..apparently a forest is supposed to appear if you stare at it for 30 secs...still hasn't worked for me. I've seen two mountains and a pretty girl but no forest...think the picture is broke.

Illinois would be making a trade of Ron Zook for Zook Lite.

It would be pretty weird to see Greg Schiano in orange.

No way in a million years he goes there. They would expect him to win. He has it made at Rutgers. They pay him well, they built him a house, and he can always say remember how bad we were before me? It's the pressure free life, no expectations, he can be as bad at this as he wants to be. Forever.

Except that he has been getting a lot of pressure to produce and even in the worst BE yet, he couldn't crack the top 3 in the league. He is going to be under serious pressure to win the BE next year. Going to UofI buys him 3 years to turn it around. It's not like going to OSU or UofM where you have to win right away.

Do you think Rutgers would ever fire him based on his team's on field performance?

I just can't see that, unless the NJ football hating power group threatened to drop the program to 1AA. And at that point, they'd have bigger problems anyway.

He has 4 more years at RU and that is it. They won't extend him because he sucks. And I can't see him being fired with 2 years or more left on that contract when RU has no money and no boosters. So he has to start planning for his future exit.

If he were to go to Illinois he would get at least two years. While that is less than the 4 years he has left at RU, he may not be as "hot" as he is now. Which is really sad being that his value is low and likely will get only worse. Illinois might be his last "out" from RU. Otherwise he may be stuck there until the end of 2015. He would then need to be a BCS DC or HC at a non BCS school.

I could see it happening. I live in NJ and there was a lot of press in the preseason and up until we gave them a win about how he needs to produce. He's been around a long time with nothing to show for it and the people who gave a lot of money to the program are saying it's past time for the program to take the next step. I think he's bought himself a couple of years with this season, but if they haven't won the BE by 2013, I think he's gone - assuming he doesn't go on his own.

If I were advising him, I would tell him to take any big conference head job that comes his way, especially given the uncertainty in the BE.

RU still owes money for the expansion, which was insane in the first place. Their attendance has only gone up because of the increased amount of student seats. On top of that the RU AD has little to no money. Same for NJ. So how can they buy out Schiano when his contract is up to and including 2016?

If he goes anywhere I think that would be pretty telling about where Rutgers really stands in terms of conference reallignment.

Citing two unnamed sources, the Home News Tribune reports that Schiano has “no interest” in the Illini opening and that the 11-year head coach is “extremely happy” with his current situation. One of those sources cited Schiano turning down previous and presumably better opportunities as evidence that he wouldn’t jump at a midlevel Big Ten job now.

“He took a team this year that was picked last in the Big East and had them contending for the league title in the final game of the season,” the source said. “He has most of his top (players) back and their recruiting is going better than ever. Why would he leave now for Illinois when he didn’t leave for Miami or Michigan before?
“The answer is he isn’t (leaving).”
