I think I have come to grips with giving him a pass on this one. villanova was ready to play and quite frankly I didn't think this would be a steamroll, didn't it would be a shitshow though either. the guy obviously cares and I don't know if that gets us anywhere but it at least gets us further than a guy that doesn't give a .

I don't know you have 12 games a season you have to make every one count. That garbage tonight was a complete waste. There is absolutely no way you can't be prepared for the first game of the season. Really worries me about the future. And I really wish he would come out and say something else. The usual after a performance like tonight just didn't feel right.

Let's hope he stops looking through the rose colored glasses and sees that his OC & his DC both were outschemed and coached, and the OL looked about as bad as you can look (save 1 play) against a team they should manhandle.

McDonald, Bullough and Adam. I'm looking at you.

I'm startled that Shafer there'd be no further punishment for Hunt. He chalked the punch up to heat of the moment, being a competitor, etc. I think it would send an awful message if he's under center next game. Shafer was way too flippant about this colossal lack of judgment and leadership. Very disappointed.

initially I would have agreed, but after seeing the replay I think it is was kind of "meh". hunt was wrong obviously and the ejection was probably right, but im not sure I could support additional punishment.

Agree completely with Shafer on this one. You guys want a big time football team yet don't want the types of attitudes and players that come with it. Can't have a bunch of polite choirboys out there and expect to be on the same level as an SEC team.

Did he say anything about we will keep fighting the good fight?

The staff was out coached...again. And, similar to the blow outs of last year, there didn't appear to be many (any?) in-game adjustments to whatever they thought was going to happen. That's not "preparedness." I am sure they were "prepared" for how they thought the game was going to play out. The issue might be deeper than that.

Let's see how they (players included) respond after the bye. But, as you and talked about pre-season, there do no appear to any real play makers on either side of the ball. They are going to have to rely on scheme, execution, and limiting mistakes to win.

He didn't haul off and clock the kid. Was it a punch, yeah. But not much of one.

Not sure it warrants much more than a game ejection.

Id personally be more pissed about guys cutting knees.
are you saying you have an issue with the way nova played the game?

It was like Ga Tech all over again except minus the cut blocks. I literally can't believe we weren't able to adjust to John freakin Robertson.

Have to remember that these are 18-22 year old kids. Stuff happens in the heat of the moment. The ACC will pass judgement and that's all that needs to happen. No one liked what happened, and I'm sure he learned his lesson. A colossal lack of judgement and leadership is invading Iraq on a whim, not a 21 year old getting frustrated and throwing a punch in a football game.

As others have said, it wasn't a vicious punch...more like a WWE worked punch. That being said, you know they're trying to clean up this after the whistle crap. You are THE QB-- The leader...The franchise. Why put yourself in a position to get tossed, especially when it's a point of emphasis ( as Shafer acknowledged in his presser)? The Nova guy was giving him the business and maybe talking smack too, but pay him back with your arm and your legs. Make a play. Get your team fired up. Good luck doing that in the locker room in your street clothes.

nova kid was trying to rip his helmet off after the play---ref overacted.

ya at first i just saw the punch, but then i saw the replay where the guy rubbed Hunt's face out so I can see how he would have reacted like that. After seeing the replay i may have let it slide.

You can read between the lines in Shafer's comments and demeanour. He knows how bad the performance was. He also talked about fan support a lot in the presser. The high turnout was a pleasant surprise and he doesn't want to lose the fans if everyone goes negative. There's nothing here wins against CM and MD won't fix. The team will need to focus harder in the next few weeks to achieve their goals. I give him and the team a pass. I'm still all in.

I think that performance is going to kill the casual fans for the Maryland game. Lots of people are writing off this season already so something needs to convince them to get back on board. SU Athletics needs to work hard to get people back to the Dome for that game.

Hunt was wrong. Not justifiable at all...and if that is bad, that is nothing to the kind of stuff he's going to get now that scouting reports will say he's a hothead who can overreact.

Very true.

This was not the team I had read about since the spring!
This was not the QB that was said to have so much maturity and leadership qualities
Where was the uptempo offense trust me bubbles screens to the right and left don't make it
Where were these great deep pool of running backs following a "good" offensive line
Where was the tackling of a mobile QB once the pressure flushed him or in more that a few case s were nothing more than straight QB keepers
And the secondary well their wos were running free most of the evening
You have to adapt your game plan both offense and defense to what the other team is doing and finding ways to stop it. Where were these adjustments !
As far as glad the fans were there well they won't be if you don't coach and preform better than that mess we witnessed last night
All that being said I for one am still am proud to say
GO ORANGE !!!

I was fully behind my orange-colored glasses this off-season; loved the optimism on here.

One game is a small sample size, but I see no evidence that McDonald is capable of doing his job well. We sat through a lot of terrible offensive football last season and last night was even more frustrating. Those players deserve someone better.

In the spirit of Shafer's generous ticket giveaway for Nova, SU Athletics should have George McDonald give everyone a refund and apology for that mess we sat through.

Agreed on this game but you can't judge him on Game 1, missing 2 starting offensive lineman and your starting QB for most of the game.

It's a knee-jerk reaction, for sure. I don't know if my expectations were out of whack or what, but that was ugly - even with Hunt, no throws downfield, vanilla as could be, too much reliance on ineffective screens, all without an appreciably quicker tempo.

I'd like to watch the game a second time, but right now I'm hard-pressed to name one thing McDonald's doing better than last year (when he was a disaster and we needed Lester to essentially take over his job for the last few games).
