Sherman Douglas - yesterday

Indeed he does - still plays Kenner League games at Georgetown against guys half his age.

Bummer that the security guard wouldn't let him in. Not a job I'd want, but still - 2,000-point scorers shouldn't get turned away from the locker room. A little less than an appropriate welcome.

Just thought of this - wonder what Sherman thought of Shaq saying Georgetown sucks and Sherm playing with all those Georgetown guys in DC? Bet Sherm will hear about it-lol.

Also my favorite player ever here. I've been wondering what happened to him and why he hadn't been back in so long. Also, didn't he get into some mess a while back by hitting a guy with his car or something?

It was nice that they waited until the under 4 in the second half to announce he was there. By then everyone had left. After the made the announcement I was able to find where he was sitting. He had pretty good seats so someone from SU had to know he was there before then.
I stayed to the end, as usual, but I did not catch the announcement. Bummer.

Hands down, the best pure PG in SU history, IMHO. That guard should be relieved of duty.
Don't work the games if you have no idea about SU bball history.
The reason he has a job at the Dome is because of players like Sherm Douglas.

You could hear the announcement on OAA but it was given as almost a throwaway item. I'm not sure if the announcers even commented on it to any degree.

CherrieHoop and I were having refreshments at half time, when suddenly, Cherrie says "Sherman!" to a nice -looking guy standing next to me. It was indeed Sherman Douglas -- whom no one else had recognized. He was dressed in a sports jacket and tie and was there with his daughter, a delightful high school senior who is interested in attending SU next year (standard parent and child college visit thing). Anyhow, Cher and I had a nice chat with father and daughter before returning to our seats for the second half.

Then, when we were leaving the arena at the end of the game, Sherm and his daughter were trying to enter the hallway to the locker room (to which they had been invited). Security guard would not let them in. Cherie and I start telling the guard ... "It's Sherman Douglas, let them in." Guard's reaction was like: "I have no idea who Sherman Douglas is, but he is not going to the locker room." I say: "He's one of the greatest players in Syracuse history." Guard clearly did not care (so much for my persuasive powers). Guard finally told Sherm and daughter to go back to the floor and exit through players' tunnel and talk to the guard there. I hope the second guard had more common sense than the first one.

My best friend from SU came back to see a game in the Dome for the first time in 20 years. His favorite player was always Sherm so I'll have to forward this to him

I can't find the article in the Washington Post archives, but a few years back in was caught in a car after hours in the parking lot on Roosevelt Island with a woman that was not his wife.

Great anecdote.

The topic of Sherm comes up and all these great posts are made about him, it says a lot about the kind of player he was. I see someone linked to my youtube collection ;) While I'm not a big fan of Dick Vitale, he once paid Sherm a great complement, I'm paraphrasing but he said Douglas was on the level of Magic Johnson and Larry Bird in terms of basketball intellect. It's still classic that he was in Georgetown's back yard and they never even offered him a scholarship, with the only other school who did being Old Dominion.

Well a car was involved, but I don't think he hit anyone with it...

A Google of his name and Hains Point/U.S. Park Police might provide a better answer.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking of.

Just out of curiosity, are you sure it was Dick Vitale who said that about Sherm? Billy Packer said something nearly identical to that during the SU / Michigan telecast, in the game at the Dome in 1988, which we won. I've probably watched that game 20 times over the years--great game!

Got to disagree. It's not the guard's job to decide which rules he makes exceptions to and for whom. If the best PG in SU history is on campus attending a game why doesn't he have an SUAD escort making sure he gets access where ever he wants??? Isn't that what student interns are for?

I can't say I have a link to that exact quote, it's not impossible that I've got my details crossed, just felt like a vivid recollection of something I remember from 20 years ago. I have definitely not seen it as many times as you've seen the aforementioned telecast.

Typical Sherman, understated, unselfish. Here for his daughter. Hopefully his treatment doesn't deter future visits. Maybe this will find it's way to DG and it he's is invited back with a little more love. But then again, it's not his style.

Nice story.
After my parents divorced, my mother was dating his uncle or something like that...
Humility is a marvelous thing.

As sad as it is that the guard didn't know who he is, i'd probably have to confess to not being able to recognize ANY player who preceded me at SU in 1985. Except Leo Rautins and Louie Orr, who have a very recent presence. But, 'legendary' guys like Bouie and Red Bruin? I would have no idea.

But Cherie and I were TELLING the guard who he was. It was not a question of the guard not recognizing his face. He didn't seem even to recognize the name! And, as Cherie said, he had some kind of a pass he was trying to show the guard.

Fair point...but it still doesn't excuse his not knowing, or making an exception for the General.
Maybe Sherm's understated personality also prevented that guard from giving him a break- he WAS there for his daughter, not himself. Being the quintessential PG he was willing to defer attention from himself, even when he coulda pulled the, "do you know who I am", card!
I just think bending the rules for an all-time great like Sherm, especially after being told who he was, isn't too much to ask for.
JMHO :noidea:

No worries! It certainly isn't outside of the realm of possibility that Vitale would have said the same thing. Sherman had a preternatural feel for the game--the best I've ever seen at the collegiate level.

"I had to you tube Sherman Douglas to see who he was" lol

The thing I'm more surprised at is the guard didn't recognize CTO. Sherm was only at SU for 4 years, CTO has been there for over 50, even has an auditorium named for her as well as her name is on one of the walls in the Melo Center. This guard needs a history lesson, gee whiz!

He had no reason to know who I was. However, here were two reputable-looking, well-dressed, middle-aged women politely trying to explain the identity of a very distinguished-looking, soft-spoken man (who was probably the only person in the entire Dome wearing a jacket and tie). It was a surreal moment to occur in the Dome at the end of a basketball game, with Sherman's jersey hanging from the rafters.

Oh, cut the guy some slack. He's just doing his job, which he may rely on to make ends meet. If his boss told him, "under no circumstances do you allow anyone past you who lacks the proper credentials", that what's his job is, and he's following orders.
