SI.com on Bazley

We're all selfishly pissed about it because it has made about 35 of our nights in the next 12 months slightly less enjoyable. Just some can process through it and come to an understanding as to why someone would make this choice, while some others are hoping the kids life turns out horribly now because he didn't wear a basketball jersey that says Syracuse on it for 5 months.
No... it's the timing more then anything. Wish he decided this back in January

I think its a great move on Bazley's part but I'm crying on the inside. The upside, as discussed in the SI article, is he gets to focus on bball and go up against better competition in addition to the $. His risk is that he underperforms against more physically mature (and older) players and it hurts his draft stock. But as we've all seen the NBA is all about measurables and potential so I think that risk is low.

Trying to look at it through non-Orange colored glasses, it's intriguing and I'm curious to see it all ends for him. I don't think it's a bright idea as regardless of how much people cry about getting players paid in college I do fall on the side of the fence that thinks they make it out very well in school regardless.

The SI article makes some good points - if he excels perhaps he elevates his draft position. I think it's far more likely me muddles his way through, and maybe just the curiosity factor alone keeps his name on the radar, but I doubt it does much for him as I would imagine he languishes on the bench. At that point it all comes down to workouts...and coaches opinions. I don't know - seems risky to me for $26,000 and some loans from an agent, maybe some very low, light endorsement money.

Meanwhile, you go to SU or any big-time school, you get guaranteed exposure, get to "experience" school, the crowds, etc...seems like a lot to give up, and for what? I really don't think you're going to the G-League and soooooooo going to take the world by storm that you're suddenly a top pick whereas before you were not. I would imagine the bit of extra "experience" he picks up will be negligible to turn scouts heads that are already drafting quite often on who they think they can mold you into and not so much the finished product that you are. At 19, I'm guessing that's case 9 out of 10 times regardless. I don't know. I could be very wrong.

Probably didn't get the shoe deal and agent full offer until at Mickey Ds. Timing is pretty coincidental if not.

Not really. The baseball minors are a massive system where the teams are owned by the parent club with their primary goal being player development. MLB draft is huge, largely to fill the minor league roster needs. Players go through multiple levels, from Rookie league (exclusively dedicated to new draftees/signees), to A, AA, and AAA. They call it the “farm system” for a reason. All players on a farm team are owned by the MLB parent team and can be traded at any time.

G League is starting to have a similar parent-child team structure, but it’s not the same. Not all teams have a g league team. Furthermore, not all players on a g league team have their rights owned by an NBA team. That’s the structure Bazley is headed into. He’s not really headed to a team that has a vested interest in his development.
you may be right. however this is the sounding bell of change for college basketball and pro basketball. there maybe chaos forthcoming, but it will never be as it is/was.

I thought he was referencing the board.

Twitter is a drain on society and should never be taken seriously.
Twitter isn't the problem...I actually think it's a great concept that provides a great service if used properly.

The problem is how some use it.

I wouldn’t take it that far. This is one kid taking a different path. Brandon Jennings (IIRC) went to Europe for one year instead of college. There hasn’t been a flood of McDAA’s following in his footsteps.

One kid doing something isn’t a movement or even an indication of change. It’s just one kid doing something different.

g league is not europe-- neither is the money that is potentially involved

Not sure I follow. Jennings got paid $1.2mm for his year in Europe. Unless I’m missing something, I doubt Bazley is getting that kind of money.
