Simple question how in year 5 is depth a major issue?

I get we won’t ever have top of the conférence talent and coaching up players and player development matter for a program like us.

If you give Dino talent I think he can get it done.

Just watching this season I get certain positions are being stretched thin but man this roster has no business being as thin as it is now.

It’s going to take 2 years which sucks to fix this.

Because it takes a long time and is extremely difficult to build depth at a place like syracuse... exactly why yougive dino more time. Hes the guy.

With 85 scholarships available depth shouldn’t be the problem it has been for us.

It’s just poor roster management. In year 5 you can't be as thin as we are.

As I said in a prior thread those super 90s squads seemed to be healthier than anything Dino has put together. conditioning to me can’t be one size fits all. Our QBs ran the pro style option so it wasn’t like they were out of harms way. Are players hitting harder? Is our strength and conditioning guys built for speed and not power? The Orange is the new fast has to be eliminated and we need to get in the weight room is my guess. Sometimes you need to fix the little stuff.

we seemed to stay upright much sturdier on turf that was the worst in college football.

It's probably a position by position analysis. I'll try, but I don't know all the stories.

OL - Concussions/injuries, probably didn't bring in the numbers either, but there should easily be 10 ready to go, instead there are 4.

RB - Opt outs just killed us here. Tucker was supposed to be 4th string. That tells me it was deep.

WR - Probably didn't expect Trishton to be 1 and done. Jordan transferred. Recruiting misses (RTB, Sharrod, maybe Courtney Jackson).

QB - Chance Amie transferred. Recruiting misses that led to Summers and the two true freshman being late pickups.

DL - Depth here isn't bad for a 3 man rotation.

LB - Seems like there's at least one class missing. Did have the Juan Wallace transfer too. Went from seniors to freshmen/sophomores.

DB - Lose 3 starters. Then true freshman beat out older guys like Jonas and Nunn.

We went toe to toe today with the #1 team in the country for 3 quarters, and probably had the least amount of available players we ever brought on the road. Just wish they could perform as well in the games that aren't quite so big. And are in our Dome.
I think you're spot on.

I think we forget the number of guys on the oline whos careers have been shortened by injury, and we just haven't been able to land some of the guys we wanted.

We seemed to have had a tough time getting traction with recruiting LBs. After years of making do with transfers, we seem to have finally got a good core group, but they're young without much behind them.

QB depth is frustrating, but it's not like we haven't tried. Amie apparently wanted nothing to do with the student part of student-athlete and we just haven't landed guys we wanted. Hopefully, Lamson is the beginning of a change there.

It baffles me that really good WRs weren't beating down the door to come here after seeing AET and Ishmael put up huge numbers. Maybe it would have been better if those numbers had been combined with more wins. Then, during the 10 win season we didn't have a guy with eye popping numbers.

OL and interior DL will never have depth here, ever. The OL, especially, will have to be a “whole is greater than the sum of its parts” for it to hit a high level. If we get hit with any injuries here at any point, we’re in an uphill battle.

Separately, recruiting just needs an overhaul and increased investment. Love some of the guys we have and that are coming in, but we need to level up to be competitive year in and year out.

Finally, imo, where we need to be great at during recruiting is:
- Kicking (indoors or nice weather 90% of the games)

- QB (our situation is unacceptable where we are. Preferably, for me, dual threat)

- Kick returners / punt returners (I always want someone back there that puts fear into the other team)

I don’t think that’s asking for too much. Make sure we are really competing in recruiting for specials and QB and go a level up across the board otherwise.

I’m hoping the transfer portal can help us with OL/DL depth and talent. We should always look to be very active there as a team players from big name programs can go and get playing time and still have big time exposure on the national level.

QB recruiting has been a mess and he just needs to be better. There’s zero excuses to not have competent QB play given we play in a P5 conference, in a Dome, against mostly southern teams. Figure it out. If Indiana can have some dual threat guy named Penix, so can we.

If we’re recruiting speed at linebacker, that can be done. We won’t get the fully developed 5 star backers, but we can get good players in our scheme that may slip due to being a bit undersized.

Secondary, for whatever reason, we seem to be killing it there in both recruiting and development. Keep it going.

RB/WR... plenty of 3 star guys turn out to be studs. It can be done here too. WRs have been a massive letdown so far, but having a guy like Tucker so far down the depth chart is impressive.

I’m not a huge Dino fan. I wanted him gone this year, but seeing the team fight against Clemson shows me he hasn’t lost them and it warrants a full 2021 without all the craziness of 2020. That said... I don’t know that he’ll ever be able to recruit the trenches we need to compete at a higher than middle of the pack ACC team... more transfers and get to a point when guys aren’t starting on the OL until they’re upperclassmen.

Does anyone here really think that recruiting under Dino is going to improve substantially? If so, why exactly?

I certainly support Dino and want nothing more for him to prove me wrong. However, he had a lot of positives earlier on and wasn't able to capitalize... a new coach, a new scheme, the Orange being the new fast, the whole close your eyes faith thing, 10 win season, beating Vtech, beating Clemson, etc. It's really amazing to me that we weren't able to capitalize on that, at least getting some talented skills players (i.e. QB, WR).

Interesting you mention Penix at Indiana. He's QB1. QB2 is a former 5 star from California via transfer from the University of Utah. That's depth with some upside.

I also think medical oversight is much tougher now (to protect the players). I used to remember guys getting a knee scoped back 20 years ago and returning to play in 2 weeks. I never hear that anymore...of course medical privacy is much bigger now.

Our depth on D, and at the skills positions are outstanding. I attribute that to the staff.

our o line and qb depth has derailed the O, paired with no spring camp and a new OC. Hardly had a chance to get on the same page and now we’re trying to run while learning to walk.

Our depth improves by the year, except QB.

Have you watched WRs on other teams? If we have depth at WR, it’s just because we have a whole lot of mediocre players at that position.

Our wideouts really aren’t that bad. Yes they have drops, so do the wideouts at Clemson and the U we try to compare them too. Im not trying to excuse the mental lapses the unit keeps making. Looking at the measurables and the talent though, its improving.

You saw that trash Class C high school 1980s locker room he was giving those speeches out of right? Meanwhile these other schools got like their own TVs and video games in their damn lockers.

Maybe that’s why he couldn’t “capitalize” early on?

This could be all fixed next year if certain seniors come back, namely on the DL.

If we get them along with the Davis’ returning at OG, the only concern I have is at QB.

I’m pretty impressed with the upgrades we’ve made in football now, but yea, it was pretty bad.

Clemson just makes up things to spend money on, then during a pandemic, they’re like oh... btw... we still need yalls help, and everyone with an IPTAY sticker throws more money at the program. We’ll never be that, but man am I jealous being around it firsthand down here.

Poor recruiting
Poor roster management
Poor player development
Injuries

This will be a huge indicator of the health of the program.

Healthy programs: guys return for the team, school, and fun despite what might be a better call monetarily.

I'm hopeful some of these senior players will want a shot at glory in '21. Getting your Master's Degree is a nice perk too if pro football doesn't happen.

There's some truth to this. Etienne is loving his college football experience, came back for more. Cisco, probably not so much, so now that his minimum 3 years are up...

It's not a knock on Cisco, if you can do it, then by all means go for it. Just noting the difference between programs.

How often have we had a guy go pro after 3 years here?

as a former class c football player I can confirm this locker room comparison

He seems to have you fully captivated.

Lol. No. I think it’s fair to criticize recruiting results. I think it’s dumb to say he should try harder if you’re not bringing proof of him not trying. It’s offensive.

Heckel and Clark would have been 5th year Seniors.

Dakota Davis would have been a returning starter. Hopefully we see him this season.

Bleich was expected to contribute towards the back half of the season.

Throw in Red, Froumy, White, and now Pat Davis on the injured/unavailable list.

That's how you get to 4.

If there was a tree in Thornden Park that grew P5 linemen, we'd be in great shape.

We only grow punters here.
All our 3 and outs on offense give punters lots of reps

It seems like every year we roll an offensive lineman or d lineman out early because of necessity not because of overwhelming skill/talent. And this is especially true for the o line. Sometimes I still feel like we are experiencing the ripple effect of Cody Conway having to play as a true freshman.

To me then the staffs biggest recruiting job this upcoming offseason is getting our lineman who have the option of taking another year to stay rather than graduate. I don’t think it’s much of a surprise to realize our two most successful seasons to date- Dungey and nassibs senior years- also had the benefit of veteran lines on both sides of the ball.

OK. Then he can't close the deal on high priority recruits. I guess the guy with all that charisma just can't recruit.
