We used to be a mediocre team with a very good quarterback too. Now we’re a mediocre team with a terrible quarterback.
There is zero doubt in my mind if we had Jennings and they had Collins, we would’ve won this game by 20+ points. Despite our ineptitude. There was not one thing about SMU that jumped off the page as even above average except for their quarterback making good decisions, and executing.
We had three 6” putts for TDs. Absolute gimmies!!! (3 plays from the 2 with no score, wide open Willis airmailed, wide open Gill airmailed). That’s 21 points that the 2nd worst QB in college puts on the board, but we have the worst.
Then he had three interceptions on top of that, that had nothing to do with the three plays mentioned above!!!
We also gave them a short field for a touchdown, because Willis ran into the line of scrimmage with his head down rather than seeing the wide open off tackle running lane.
7 drives where we stopped ourselves (vs SMU making great defensive plays).
And for the third time in five games, Dixon laid an egg with his play calling and formations.
Fran’s clock management is and has been Dinoesque. At the end of the first half we had zero sense of urgency with 1:20 left on the clock in SMU territory. ZERO. Guys celebrating first downs, walking to the line of scrimmage, etc. that’s on the coaching. Then with 6:00 left, down 19, we actually took 61 seconds to run 1 play. 61 seconds!!! I was losing my **** yelling at the TV. That is Terrible coaching.
Duke curb stomped us, but if ever there was the definition of a game where we beat ourselves. This is it. Other than their stellar quarterback play, they just sat back and watched us self-destruct.
