SMU Post Game

Mr Starling, you can stop heaping all blame first on Eddie, and now Jyare, for the loss, when we all watched your son "Turnstile" take the lead role in stealing defeat from the jaws of victory.
I never said JJ played well. Everyone was just all over JJ and not looking at Lampkin and Davis too. SMU outscored SU 28-10 in the paint in the second half. Their freshman big had point blank layups against Lampkin. Lampkin made no effort to push him out further from the basket. Why Davis keeps trying to back his man down when he had no advantage is not smart. That’s on Red. Davis couldn’t score and he’s terrible at finding open teammates. He’s the last guy I want trying to create. It’s two games in a row that Lampkin didn’t show up in the second half. JJ should never take more than 3-4 threes in a game. There’s a reason he’s open. Teams want him to shoot threes. It would be nice going down the stretch if our bigs could get a big defensive rebound and when they do not have it ripped out of their hands. If JJ was 1A in playing lousy then Lampkin was a close 1B.

I have been the first person to say that Lampkin was not worth what we gave him, but that entire choke job at the end last night started and ended with JJ. It was a repeat of the VT game. The JJ excuses are tiring. He's shooting 34% from the field since January 29th and is 26% from 3 on the year. His advanced metrics suggest he's almost been as bad as Carlos on the year.

Cool! You said it yourself...so
Hmm? You only like successful teams? These guys played their hearts out tonight. I am still a fan bc I grew up watching the 80s and will always be a fan til im in my 80s... I pray I make it.
So did life happen or you just did whatever? while game was on?

I am not the almighty fan man, JMO obviously...I just will never understand how a fan can pick and choose when they are a fan...If the team is playing and you are able to watch...well thats what a fan does, watches their team.

Not just when they are successfully winning alot..
So if we were 22-7 or whatever would you have watched then?
Duke is having a good year maybe you should watch them?
Spectator sports are for entertainment. What we have is not entertaining. If you have some need to watch dysfunction out of loyalty, have at it. I guess you're a better fan than me. I would rather enjoy watching a television show both my wife and I enjoy rather than have her read a book while I frustratingly watch our mess.

It's good they played their hearts out. They should. It is literally now their job. I have caught a little of Duke this year. It makes me sad that we used to be good like that, but, really, when we're bad, I just have little interest in college basketball at all. I probably won't pay much attention to the tournament either, maybe just enough to root against the SEC.

I did DVR the game and watched a few minutes this morning while working out. Maybe I'll watch a little more tomorrow morning. If I'm lucky, maybe it'll redeem a little of my fanhood in the eyes of the arbiter of fandom.

Red is clueless on substitutions. It's so bad I can't make any sense out of them. He's God awful at feeling the flow of a game and his players. It's either pre determined or just random.

i surrender at the half. wasn't watching just casually listening and catching live stats but looking at the shooting numbers of both teams i realized it was unsustainable and our collapse almost inevitable. and frankly watching the condensed game the next day saves me valuable time , sleep , oxygen and stress.

So many blown second half leads …

Last night - up 63-51 with 9:54 left
VaTech - up 69-56 with 8:45 left
Pitt - started the game up 22-6, up 45-34 with 19:15 left
BC - up 56-45 with 12:12 left, ended up winning in 3OT

Those 4 games have been in the last month too. If we hold onto those 3 2nd half leads, we are 15-15 overall and 9-10 in the ACC. But this team clearly deserves the record they have.

This team can't close out games because they can't make plays on either end of the floor in the last 5 minutes. Because there just isn't a go to talent to get a bucket or get fouled (and make the free throws).
The defense the last 5 minutes was horrendous. It was like a SMU layup drill. The guards get beat off the dribble like they're standing in concrete. The front line doesn't offer help defense. Even with as bad as they played if they make their free throws the last few minutes and go 6-6 they win the game. They went 3-6.
Losing teams consistently make losing plays. Winning teams make those plays.

Lets not forget earlier this year Cuffe would play late in games because he would make free throws.
He would even shoot technical free throws.
Then Red decided he should play between 10 and 14 minutes regardless if he was having a good or bad game. And rarely play in the closing mintues.

As I said, Reds rotations make no sense and are not affected in any way by how the player is actually playing in the game.
Proof in point is Taylor and Cuffe. They should have played much more and both sat the bench in the closing minutes when we could not score.

Several things contributed to the loss last night. The one thing that really stands out to me is Red not playing Taylor more. He was the teams leading scorer (13pts) in only 16 minutes. Had the hot hand to start the game, yet was one of the first to see the bench. I know scoring isn't everything, but it wasn't like he was hurting the team on the defensive end - unlike several other of the players who were lousy on defense coupled with poor offense. I am seriously having a hard time rationalizing how he spent more time on the bench than in the game.

Love that the student-athletes showed fight last night. It speaks well for their character when it would be so easy to just fold. Good for them.

The rotations appear to be predetermined regardless of what's going on in the game. I've never seen anything like it at any level. I really don't think talent is THE issue with this team. There are some good pieces on this squad, and I shudder to think about how it's quite possible that better pieces (with a good portal season) might be mismanaged.

Spot on. If next year is 500 or better Red will get a fourth year.
Im with you but unfortunately i think that he will.

Did you just reply to yourself?

LOL!

We've gone from sucking in the beginning of games to sucking at the end of games. Is that an improvement?

So the women just blew a 19 point lead and lost. Must be something in the water!! Both programs need better performances game in and game out if they want the NIL $$ to be there.

I wouldnt be so sure
I don't see how the program can swing that financially. The gameday $$$ losses are going to be enormous. I would make a pretty healthy wager that Red's termination THIS offseason would pay for itself.

How many casual fans is the Anthony factor really going to draw? Even if they started winning, it would take most of the season to get attendance back up. There's a huge lag between winning and excitement in the program translating to gate $$$.

The damage already done to the program's perception is pretty severe.

It is very obvious to me now that Autry cannot judge his players in game potential.

Taylor played for 16 minutes was 5-7 FG and 3-4 3PT with a 13 PT total and Autry took him out.

Bell played 24 minutes was 3-6 FG and 3-5 3 PT Autry took him out.

Cuffe played 13 minutes was 4-6 FG, 1-2 3PT, Autry took him out

Starling played 30 minutes was 3 - 17 FG, 1-10 3PT, Autry left him in????

Was Autry waiting for Starling to get hot? Didn't he see the other players he took out as ON. I didn't get this one. Autry was a great player not a good coach, needs to go.
