So Army is playing

I was at the 96 game... man I cannot wait until we roll out teams like that again.

I have tenuous connections to upstate NY although I was born in "the City" more years ago than I care to say, and worse yet am an FSU grad, but have always thought that "New York's Team" should play NY teams, despite the problem of facing an option offense such as Army. What Clemson does with their once a year 1-AA (FCS) opponent is to rotate the team that gets the payday $$ from visiting "Death Valley" among three I think S. Carolina 1-AA schools, and SU could do the same with Cornell, Colgate, and SUNY Albany, all 1-AA football schools. It would also be a way to advertise SU in NY and it looks like SU football is on the way up again so that should not be a problem. Home and away with Army and home each year with one of the three mentioned on a rotating basis and you have half of your OOC schedule set.

I would love a reason to go to west point in the fall... I don't attend a lot of away games... young kids... however I am always at the dome. West Point would be a great sell for the wife and kids.

The entire series - most surprising to me was that in the 21 times we've played, only 5 have been in Syracuse.

I'm shocked that you've only played them 21 times. I thought you played them every year in the heyday of the Eastern Independents along with Pitt, PSU, et al.

Wake Forest, Duke, Buttgers, and Ped State this coming season.

So why aren't we on their schedule and vice versa? :(:bang:

Would make for a helluva tailgating experience here and at West Point. The game would be enjoyable as well.;)
I'll add my voice. We really should be playing them regularly. I've been to the campus once, not for football, but it is everything you hear about and more.

Well, we know the head coach is on board.

The problem has been with the AD. Hope the new staff is a little more proactive and intelligent in scheduling. Coach Shafer mentioned last night that he did some research on our OOC scheduling and found that Syracuse had the toughest OOC schedule in the country over the past 10 years.

That is insane for a school trying to rebuild it's football program.
SU has had the toughest OOC schedule for over twenty years.
At one point (can not remember exact years) we played more D-1 teams in one season then the rest of the Big East combined.
How many years would we have gone bowling if we had not played such tough opponents.

It's an oddity for sure. Army played some our common East Indie opponents on a near-annual basis (BC, Pitt, Rutgers), but we never synced up with them. Plus Army used to play a much different schedule -- throughout the 80s and into the mid-90s they had several 1-AAs on it every season. In '87, for example, they played Holy Cross, The Citadel, Colgate and Lafayette. As recently as '95 they played Lehigh, Colgate and Bucknell.

Really makes you wonder why they joined C-USA, they never played at that level before and the results showed it.

Kind of amazing how Navy has been able to be pretty competitive each year for a decade or so when Army is struggling so much. Our favorite coach Paul Johnson really got the program back on track at Navy and Ken Niumatalolo has done well since. But I agree, I would love to play Army regularly.

Talent is an issue too, I believe. It's been explained to me that among the service academies Army is the toughest to recruit for, given that being in the Army is simply more dangerous when these kids have to serve their commitments than the Navy or Air Force.

For the next AD, who is hopefully reading threads like this, let's please play Army every single year. There are way too many positives.

Petition?

That should be one of the requirements for an AD candidate, one of the service schools on the schedule every year.

Hate to be that guy...but I doubt Army wants to play us every year...4-5 times a decade is about right. If UConn can make up trophies so can we... The 10th MTN Cup

The difference is that Army might actually be interested in winning the trophy.

I wish I knew if Army was ever asked about a long term scheduling deal. If they said no, so be it.

Perhaps Army boycotted SU due to the McNabb salute?

After his #44 comments I wanted to give McNabb a salute.
