So damn proud of this team...

On the hoop side we tend to have these leads that aren't insurmountable but the general 8-12 point deal, and watching on TV some seats seem to empty out when the opponent is a couple of 3s from making it real interesting.

Maybe it's a Catholic thing - leaving after communion or before the final hymn. :noidea:

I actually blame Rt 81. It's the worst way out of the city when there are 30,000+ people trying to leave at once. The folks fleeing to the suburbs apparently don't have much knowledge of the side streets out of the city which would be a thousand times faster than trying to get on Rt81. The overpass has brought nothing but misery to the inner city and created jello brains for those that live in the burbs thinking it's the best thing since sliced bread.

I cannot for the life of me imagine using Route 81 traffic as an excuse ... I would love to see these people on I-85, I-75 or 400 in Atlanta ... CNY traffic is non-existent.

Agreed. Everything is relative. :noidea:

I've noodled this theory around in my head for years and never been able to articulate it well, but I think it shows a certain detachment from the program. Like the fan knows that the program isn't any good, and that the fan is some objective spectator, so getting up and leaving even when the outcome is plausibly in doubt shows some kind of superiority.

And obviously, people can do whatever they want. I just think that having that mentality detracts from the experience.

Most people who attend SU games are not alums, so they have a very tenuous relationship with the program. They give their allegiance conditionally. Most big state programs have fans who are alums, they love their teams like people love their children - unconditionally. SU has fans who treat the program like the neighbor's kids.

My old man is famous for the back door smash post communion, like clockwork. That is funny

I completely agree with you. Those folks who live here that have never experienced what real traffic is like don't know how good they've got it. That doesn't mean they won't use Rt 81 traffic jams as an excuse though.

GA 400 may be the absolute worst, although I've been trapped on the Connector one too many times as well. Interested to see how the new ball park will impact 41 and 285.

Spaghetti Junction is really bad too ...

I only left one game early... 2013 at GA Tech.
It was cold, it was raining, my kid was complaining...

I bought him a GA Tech hoodie at halftime to keep him warm and somewhat dry. The 2nd half started out as bad as could be (3 and out followed by a Jacket TD?), at which point we opted to head back to our SyracuseFan tailgate. We were not the only ones...

That one was brutal. I didn't turn the tv off but I was messing around on the internet on my laptop for pretty much the entire second half and only half watching. I didn't want to turn it off in case I found one positive I could take away from the game - not sure I found it that day.

"Most" fans of state schools aren't alums, they're state residents who grew up liking the team. Plus, some of these same people with "tenuous" relationships with SU are diehard Bills, Yankees, etc. fans. It's not like anyone went to school at a pro team.

I mean, I hear what you're saying, and I don't dispute the lack of connection. It's just odd because there is simply nothing that brands CNY better than Syracuse athletics.

While they may not all be alums, a higher percentage are. And if they didn't attend the school, their father did, or uncle or sister or brother...

I know that's literally true but man when I lived in Michigan it felt like people either went to UM or MSU and if they didn't someone in in their family did. Georgia is the same way. Colorado seemed wide open and Florida to. Florida people are fans of one of the '3' but seemed most of themweren't alums. (at least in my experience)

Not to mention it's a city pride vs state pride thing. Plenty of fans in the surrounding region of Syracuse, but not as many that would really go out of their way to travel to Syracuse, much less anywhere else. Plenty of people in the surrounding region that just don't feel the connection.

But if you're from Anywhere, Ohio...
