So here’s where I’m at..

It was meant to be 6 deep….with spot subs when necessary from Taylor, Petra, McCloud and the Hofstra kid.
No biggie, you stated what your lineup would be and you had 6 guys in it.

Autry doubling down on Carlos during the post game press conference makes it seems like there is no plan to replace him in the lineup. Very concerning.
You want him to go all JB and throw the kid under the bus

I'm sure Red is nervous that benching Carlos will destroy him I wonder if maybe coming off the bench will help settle him down. Guy just seems so nervous and tense. Ease that pressure and make the decision now.

Not at all. I appreciate Autry having the kid’s back. I hope the kid balls out for the rest of the season and validates the coaching staff’s belief in him. It’s just that other than the first exhibition game against a poor D2 team, we have not seen anything that would justify that belief. He’s clearly not playing confidently…maybe bringing him off the bench will release some of the pressure he’s putting on himself.

I think we’re looking at another year without a bid. Disappointing. Very.

On Red: He did a good job getting 20 wins last year. That team was a nightmare. I felt good about him going into this year. However I have some concerns now. The PG evaluation has been catastrophic. The hype around Carlos was tremendous. He’s a 10-15 minute player. He was billed as a “tough kid” warrior type. He looks confused and petrified.

The move should have been made before Brooklyn IMHO. These games were too important. Some player rotations have been head scratchers. Hs going to get a third year, but if that team doesn’t make the dance, my guess is we start a new search.

PG position. You have to roll with JJ at this point. Spell him with Carlos. Choppa would be my 3rd guard and I like Taylor for spurts because he’s soo good defensively.

SF: I’d still start Bell, but he’s in a short leash. He just doesn’t get engaged if he’s not shooting well. So if he’s not, he’s gotta come out.

I’d roll with Davis Freeman Eddie. I don’t get the love for Petar. He’s smart, but he’s slow and flat footed. He’s a nice piece down the road, but him playing over Davis last night really bothered me. He’s like Jimmy Jr out there.

I’d like to see Naheem every night to give Eddie a blow and play a bit of Zone. The press looks like ass- don’t bother.

I’d yank Freeman after every bad shot he takes early in the clock. He must be made to work inside out. Some JB style tough love would do this kid wonders.

this has been terribly disappointing so far.
Thank you Jake, for this post and all your contributions on this board.

100% agree with everything you said. The pieces are there but I’m starting to get concerned over Red’s coaching. The offense and defense are just so elementary. I get Dino vibes watching him coach. Mistakes are tolerated without consequences. It’s just so much like Dino’s lack of discipline. I think we’re going to coach Fran and the guy I see is Jason Hart.

Love everything else about Red and I’m rooting like hell that he can succeed. But three years no tournament and he’s out. JB said it past interviews when he first started at SU he was hoping he’d get three years. In my opinion red gets the same three years but no tournament and he’s out

Agree.

Chris has also shown more hustle than he is being given credit for by many fans. Yet again, he was able to get back on D and block a shot, the third such instance in two days.

On the season, he has as many blocks as Eddie, Freeman, and Davis combined. Or Eddie, Freeman, and McLeod combined. At 6'7", he is way shorter than the latter three as well.
He's been getting chase down/weakside blocks his entire career here. They are fun to watch when they happen. The flashy plays. I will say it again... one of the lowest IQ players I've seen is Chris Bell. And the worst rebounding forward in SU history. AND the ability to get extremely hot from deep on catch and shoot.

I guess that's "who he is", and if so you put blame on the staff for 1. not turning him into a more rounded player (I don't think this is the case) or 2. NEEDING him to be a much more rounded player for the team to be successful.

I think we can make the tourney.
I appreciate the optimism. From your lips to God's ears. The only issue that you haven't taken into account is that despite the fact that November will be coming to a close in less than a week, our beloved Orange still do not have one single quality win. Or even if not true "quality", they don't have any wins of any substance whatsoever.

It wasn't that long ago that going into tipoff Orange fans expected to win every game.
Now some folks are just happy to play the other team "close."
It's a sad comment on how far the program has fallen.

It seems this team has to go inside and/or play inside-out.
So how about a lineup with 3 bruisers playing upfront: Lampkin, Davis and Freeman?
Move Bell to the 2 and JJ to point.

Problematic?
Sure.
But so is everything else.
I don't think Freeman is a bruiser. He shies away from contact.

Yeah, this is another good reason to figure a lineup where Naheem can get in there and give some good minutes w/ the right pieces around him with his rim protecting abilities
This 100%

After watching Lampkin hobble around it is very risky to assume he stays healthy. I’d be very worried about him missing some time this year.

We have played 5 games this season. Just start winning. If we play like we did against Texas against our future schedule we will make the tourney. The board collectively seems to think losing by 4 is the same as losing by 34

We better go at least 22-6 the rest of the way then. The ACC is hot garbage. Probably need to pull out one or two of UNC/Duke/Tennessee while we’re at it.

If the ACC is indeed hot garbage, then that is a possible outcome.

Nice to be optimistic, but Donnie needs to get a lot better, Bell can't continue to not get rebounds and assists, need a real backcourt, and hope Chance can give us something. JJ and the Freshman should start with Carlos off the bench.
If everything goes right we might be one of the last teams in.

I don't mean this as arguementative, but it feels like we're watching different teams. To my eyes, this is unquestionably the worst team we've had in my 30+ years of being a fan. All of our marquee players have severe limitations, and our role players are mid-major level or talented but very young.

2022-23 was noticeably worse at this time of the year.

They got smoked by Colgate, lost to Bryant at home, then got obliterated at Illinois

My god, my usual go to for the worst team in my life that I watched was the end of the 01-02 season where we lost 8 of 12 and then got bounced in the 1st round of the BET before that run in the NIT.

We won 23 games that year! I remember we were good to start and then all the stuff broke loose, but that team is like the '27 Yankees comparatively. At least they were good, lost to at least decent teams and then made a run in the NIT that was sort of fun after the debacle that was that year. I will never forget at one point an announcer talking about Deshaun's NBA prospects at one time early in the year. My god.

But that 22-23 team that lost to the teams you note just never would have happened back then. Dang. In fact, we beat Colgate by 19 that year.

Maybe Danny Hurley will be available in 2 years? They are about to fall to Memphis.

I like the fight I see from some players. They can be fun to watch when we lower our expectations a bit. But, this is not what we are here for. We need to make the tournament next year or he needs to go.

The lack of help D is concerning. There doesn't seem to be anything innovative on O. I'd rather have a Gonzaga type system, or UConn for that matter.

I think part of it is that this team requires a different coaching skill set. Last year's team was childish but most of them had pretty good basketball IQ. This team may be more coachable but much lower IQ. So far, Red's having trouble fixing that.

I don't know about this take. Most of these transfers are seniors. One would hope the "basketball IQ" part is something they would have down by now. Eddie played in the tournament the last 3 years. Davis and the other guys were stars at their schools for not just one, but a couple years. They had pedigree. Mostly it's Carlos who is failing to live up to advance billing. The other guys are mostly doing OK.

I thought the help D was noticeably better in Brooklyn, Swish. I think foul shots and maybe the wrong guys on the floor at the wrong times cost us both of those games. Both were there to be won.

Maybe "IQ" is the wrong way to say it. On Defense, most of the team, including some of the upper classmen, repeatedly do the wrong thing. Somewhat better in NYC but still.

Most seem to make better decisions with the ball in their hands.
