$3 million? $6 million? More?

Does the rule of unintended consequences come into play?

The modern "hue and cry" scenario spurred by an insatiable media and a social compulsion to appear politically correct - that itself is propelled by monetary interests - has become quite disconcerting.

The woman is alive, healthy, married and satisfied with the criminal administration of the matter.

Is it really necessary now to hurt her financially?

Is there really a need to metaphysically "kill" a young man who up to that moment in Atlantic City apparently had lived an exemplary life?

I'm tired of guys like "Mike & Mike" driving social policy and impacting individual lives.

Then we have people on this forum trying to use psychological inferences to make everyone believe that Ray Rice is and has always been a woman beater and/or horrible human being. By all accounts, aside from that incident, he had been a pillar of the community and a great guy. People do make mistakes, I forgot how many perfect people are out there.

What he did was awful but him and his WIFE have moved on from it and are in what seems to be a loving marriage.

<Insert chill Kermit the Frog meme> "but that's none of my business"

Some of the shock being expounded upon in the by the media is purely politically correctness driven. Nothing in the video released yesterday refutes or changes the facts as already know by everyone. We already saw Rice drag her out of the elevator. He admitted to hitting her and her her getting knocked unconscious. What the heck did everyone think that would look like on film? I'm not excusing anything, I thought from the beginning he got off light by the legal system and maybe the NFL. But that video shows exactly what I thought happened based upon Rice and his then fiance's statements. Except maybe the way he just stood there looking at her. I can't believe he didn't immediately drop to his knees to see if she was still breathing or something that would have shown some concern...is that what is driving the current anger? He must have been really really wasted because his reaction was like "what the hell you doing on the floor?" Why did Goodell NEED to see that video. It doesn't show anything Goodell didn't already know happened. Maybe some people have selective imaginations but I don't know how with everything we see in movies, TV and video games.

She's not entitled to a penny from NFL fans. She can stay married to him, no one says otherwise. But the league doesn't need to pay him.

The NFL cuts and suspends people all that time. They have families too. So we should defer to the wishes of family members on that too?

It's because people are stupid. Chris Brown beating Rihanna isn't on tape therefore what Ray Rice did is 100 times worse. No, its the same, but simpleton, holier than thou's can't rationalize and are easily manipulated by the news who fans the flames for ratings. I mean Buzzfeed has posted 20 stories on this on my facebook newsfeed already. Enough.

I'm not arguing the money aspect. I'm arguing that people need to calm down and stay out of their life like she asked. At this point its overkill, as everything in our society becomes these days.

the only reason it's overkill is because the willfully blind NFL gave him a fraction of the punishment of someone who smokes a joint.

Agreed, but even if they suspended him 8 games-a year, that video was going to cause people to lose their minds.

I disagree with every word of this, especially the last sentence. I've seen enough to make my own judgement and you have no idea what his wife seems to be in. You seem to be making your own psychological inferences.

i highly doubt that

You may be right, but I have heard of no other incidents or indications that he was anything but a good guy.

He may be O.J. or he may simply be a young man who, in the context of an intense male-female relationship, had a really bad moment.

I'm going off the wife's own words and actions. You're just making assumptions based on what? Don't say the elevator footage because that happened in the past and they've clearly moved on from that.

What other awful things has Ray Rice done that you seem to be privy to?

So, if she forgives him and "they've clearly moved on from that", then no crime occurred? Nothing actionable by the NFL? I'm having trouble figuring out exactly what you are arguing here.

it's all about video plain and simple. Video changes everything. Our brains are visually orientated and we're visual creatures and until it's literally in front of our faces (actual experience or video a close second), it just doesn't compute the the same degree.

People want to give the benefit of the doubt (especially in the sycophantic world of sports, double especially with a supposed "good guy" like this as described above), and look for anyway to explain something away (she says takes some responsibility, maybe he pushed her and she fell and hit her head is one take I heard, etc.); and again if and until there's vid to show the reality it just doesn't hit as hard.

Video, seeing with ones own eyes, changes everything.

I think getting cut with an indefinite suspension was a bit much. He should've been suspended initally for 8 games to a year.

My issue is more with demonization of him as a person when he's had no prior issues and by all accounts was a good dude. People do make mistakes.. We have people on here trying to convince everyone he's a serial woman beater and the media is fanning the flames so holier than thou people on social media can rant about how awful he is.

we've been disagreeing less but i just think this is really ugly. talking about "in the context of an intense male-female relationship" is almost implying that people who criticize him more harshly are taking it out of context. not quite but it's close

plenty of good people commit reckless crimes that endanger people - drunk driving is a good example. i don't know any good guys who've ever hit a woman. hell, anyone who sucker punches another guy is probably a piece of garbage all around, much less hitting a woman. i think it's safe to assume the worst about people who hit women. what good does it do to give those guys any benefit of the doubt?

If he was a good dude he would not hit a woman.

People do make mistakes..
A mistake is when the waitress brings you regular coffee when you ordered decaf. Hitting a woman (who you supposedly love) is significantly more than a mistake.

He doesn't have to be a "serial" woman beater. Doing it just one time is way too many times. And he is awful.

Ok. You're perfect. I'd never hit a woman but i'd also never define a man's life off of one moment in time.

Wonder how long she'll stay married to him if he's not rich.

But he wasn't suspended 8 games - that's part of the uproar (and that is the NFL's fault). And it's also his fault. The only reason to hit a woman is if she is coming at you with a gun or knife and is threatening your life. Spitting (if she did) is usually not life-threatening.

My issue is more with demonization of him as a person when he's had no prior issues and by all accounts was a good dude.
By all accounts? Really? By all accounts, the guy in Syracuse who kept women in a dungeon was a good dude.

People do make mistakes..
You call cold-cocking a woman a mistake? I call it a crime. I guess that's where we differ.

We have people on here trying to convince everyone he's a serial woman beater and the media is fanning the flames so holier than thou people on social media can rant about how awful he is.
I have no idea if he is a serial woman-beater. All I know is that one time is too many.

His reaction afterwards, to me, was possibly more of an insight into Ray Rice as the punch itself.

i wouldn't define crime as a moment in time

Not sure I follow you here - if a crime isn't an action in a moment of time, what is it?

Listen, you guys are all entitled to your opinion. Clearly what he did was a huge mistake/crime but everyone here lives in a glass house. I hope one day you never mess up and have your life defined by it. People don't seem to be too big on forgiveness here. His wife, the victim, forgave him and would like to move on and asks that you all stop, but continue on in your messageboard character assassination, Rice opened himself up to it by what he did.

Not to be an @sshole, but there are plenty of women out there who abuse men, too - physically, verbally and emotionally. There are plenty of women out there who hit men, and to an extent they are empowered to do so by society's moral ban on striking a woman. Apart from the strength issue (which can be negated by use of a weapon by the woman), why is a man striking a woman any worse than a woman striking a man?
