So part of Cohen's job description is to

I think people are upset because there is no point in the article. Any fan that follows the team knows he is not playing because of a log jam at RB, and for the casual fan, well they wouldn't even know he's on the team since again he's not playing. The article seemed like it was just rubbing salt in a wound, especially the last smart a$$ sentence of the article. I guess he has to do stuff like this when his access has been cut.

I see your take. I guess I just don't see the "rubbing salt in a wound" part. I mean I'm sure there are people wondering why this guy who had more accolades (especially considering his H.S. competition) than any other SU RB coming in isn't playing. Cohen is a tool and a poor 'journalist' but with this particular article I thought it was fine.

You read those papers? Because I rarely see local rags with a negative slant dissing players and trying to create controversy where there is none.

Cohen is an assclown
I surf the net and read other newspapers and such. And YES, local rags are usually more harsh, more critical, and in some cities downright nasty when it comes to the local college team! Cohen is a puppy dog compared to some other reporters in other cities

Ya I didn't really see this one as one of his worst, just more pointless, but what else is new? But I can definitely see why people would think that way.

i really don't see it as him pouring salt into the wound. His job is to report he is reporting. You don't like his article choice, which you are entitled not to like but its not a bad topic by any means. It's fair and his coverage is fair.

Ya. Probably pointless. Definitely not demeaning or nasty like others are whining and claiming it is.

Let's see. The guy carried the ball a whopping 30 times last year and 12 times the year before. And he was "all the rage"? He may actually get more carries this year than any prior year.

It's correct, but does it really need to be said? What real purpose does it serve other than to demean the player unnecessarily?

He isn't trying to demean the player. He is covering the football team and the players on the team. The team is 1-2 and not playing well and he is raising a "fair topic" as to why this kid, who has played in the past, isn't playing now! That's not an un-fair question to raise, cover, and investigate! Sorry, its not!

If you think he is waking up every morning trying to rip players and make them feel bad you are fooling yourself. If this team was 3-0 and averaging 50pts a game, yes he isn't writing this article. His articles would have a more positive slant and be more happy happy joy joy! But the team is 1-2 and not playing well...so he is just being honest in his reporting. And covering various topics as to why the offense is struggling and what players on offense are playing and not playing. I don't see the big deal with it.

So, AAM not playing factors into why the offense struggled the first two weeks of the season?

Yeah...highly relevant / insightful topic choice by Cohen. Way for him to have his finger on the pulse of what went wrong early in the season.

I don't think any of that. I don't think he's making a conscious decision to go out and be smarmy or insulting or any of the other things he's been accused of. What I DO think is that his reporting has regressed considerably since graduating from the DO and joining SMG. He's becoming the Ross Krautmann of sports journalism (See what I did there?). I don't blame him; I blame management for not properly mentoring him and helping him build on the skills he developed at Newhouse and the DO. He's not the only reporter I see as the victim of the sinking ship over there. Marnie Eisenstadt could also be an absolute star at the highest level if she was given better editorial guidance than what SMG has budgeted for.

Like I said in my original post, I DO think that someone who followed the team last season WOULD question why AAM hasn't been as active so far, and I felt the story generally did a good job of exploring that issue. But I think the last graph was gratuitous, and clearly it left a sour taste with more than a few readers, as exemplified here. A good copy editor would have likely stepped in and put the red pen to those lines.

Because Syracuse's offense was pretty bad the first 2 games and it does raise the question why isn't this guy who has played in the past and helped this team win, not on the field now.

If you think Cohen woke up and decided he was going to write an article to make a player feel bad that is some naive thinking right there.

SU's offense has been excellent in the redzone this season, how does AAM not playing raise any questions considering his role last year?

The subject in and of itself isn't bad, it's the treatment. He should just stick to the facts, there's no need for Cohen to be a dick about it. That's the point.

It's not the subject matter, it's the tone and attitude. Just because something is a legit story doesn't mean the approach and execution can't be questioned.

These guys are like people who run on the field but without being hilarious and awesome in every way. Have to ignore them if you don't want to encourage them

Cohen wrote that 'he was all the rage' for 3 games at the end of the season, not for 30 carries over the entire season

I'll say this: Cohen and Mink are working hard. They are producing a large amount of articles that give valuable insight to the program. For example, they just posted a list of players likely heading towards redshirt status as well as video of Cam Lynch talking up stars on the scout team and a profile of Ryan Norton's first performance as the placekicker. There's GOOD stuff here and in most of their stories. Really, these guys have produced more stories about recruiting than any other team the newspaper has fielded that I can think of. The problem comes with what GoSU96 wrote (in an excellent post) about tone and execution. This is where strong editorial oversight is needed.

Except I just don't see the dick part...at all.

So I was trying to think of who these new reporters reminded of... it's taken awhile, but I finally was able to remember that I saw it in a Frasier episode during a bout with insomnia about a year ago... go to the 11:10 mark and meet the kids from "Teen Scene," who lure Frasier onto their show in order to bash him on air:

God I love that show!

Agreed. I don't see it as demeaning, nasty, or rubbing salt in wounds so much as trifling, smarmy, and pointless.
Exactly. I don't read much PS stuff anymore...but what struck me most recently was the flimsiness of the articles. It's almost bleacher report-esque. A few boring paragraphs. The strangest one was the former player one...so pointless.

The only sport Cohen has ever played in his life came in a box and needs a joy stick. I gave him credit a few weeks ago for a good article and had hoped that he was on a better path. Seems as if he truly is mean spirited

I agree. The tone in some of Cohen's articles has been a bit harsh, but these guys are turning out stories that the old regime would have never done. The scout team article was a good example, but it came up short. I would have liked to hear more. How do some of the other freshmen look? The QBs? Talk to someone other than Lynch.

How about the title to Bud's article: "SU Gained Little In Win Over Wagner, Other Than Big Numbers."

Great way to energize the fan base to come out to a game this weekend!!!

I actually thought I woke up in New Orleans this morning when I saw the green headlines and photo of Montana and his son.

You know, in light of this, the headline about Floyd Little's quip and everything mentioned in this thread, I have to wonder if the sports department at SMG is trying to send SU/SUAD a message that they aren't going to play nice anymore. I might be over-thinking this.
