So part of Cohen's job description is to

that's kind of funny hearing this after listening to Bud cry on the radio this morning saying they are still just children, and they are doing this for fun. While he is right in a sense him even trying to make this point over the radio made him come off as old and out of touch. There is absolutely nothing recreational about this, and the kids would be the first ones to tell you this.

As for Cohen he hasn't made any friends. Sure it's not his job to make friends, but he needs relationships to get access, and that is something that he is very limited to right now.

This is his big issue right now: access. How many quotes do you see in his articles? If a guy like Donnie Webb could become persona non grata, how long do you think it will take this guy? He's already jumped the shark.

That is an insult to Asshats everywhere.
I wondered if AAM was hurt . He played in the game so that question was answered.
Hope the junior (jurono) did his homework and he wasn't banged up in practice.

The AAM seems fine to me. He isn't ripping AAM at ALL nor is he being condescending. If anything, he's questioning why the staff isn't using him. Nothing wrong with that particular article, imo.
There could be 50 more articles like that, then. Lots of skill guys aren't getting the touches that some here would like to see. The Jerome Smith article should be a real gem.

I personally thought Coker was all the rage over those three games last year.

I can't click onto the Moore or Allen articles so could someone please let me know why they said AAM played? I assume there was no redshirt possibility and the kid wants to play.

I hate drama on a team...HATE IT. Especially for football. I just hope this isn't Cohens way of drawing attention to himself or being a little kid stamping his feet because he was told no. On the other hand some of the articles some of you posted sounded pretty good regarding the scout team and redshirts...could someone please post what was written there for me please?

Cohen wrote that 'he was all the rage' for 3 games at the end of the season, not for 30 carries over the entire season
You mean his 10 rushes against Temple or 2 against Missouri? He didn't play in the bowl game. I recall it was a HUGE controversy last year when "All the Rage" Ameen-Moore didn't play in the bowl game. How could he not? After 2 carries against Temple, everyone expected him to lead the Orange to victory v. WVU.

It wasn't about the number of carries. It was about being on the goal line team and the number of TDs he had. Plus the turn around in Smiths fortunes who could hardly buy a TD last year now has become the goal line TD maker.

How about the title to Bud's article: "SU Gained Little In Win Over Wagner, Other Than Big Numbers."

Great way to energize the fan base to come out to a game this weekend!!!

His job isn't to energize the fan base!! That's what some of you don't get. Reporters aren't Cheerleaders! They aren't shill's for the university!

I agree but I also don't like that type of story line so I choose not to read it or give it hits.

For years I've read Bud and his prose:

Snide headline
Start to almost say something nice but in a back handed way
Be as clever as he can be
Closing paragraph...try to annoy but still attempt to be cute

Leave you feeling like why the hell did I just read that?

I haven't read him in years because of all of the back handed compliments. I don't read these writers articles to have SU pumped up, I just want well written articles that don't have a bias/agenda either way with the correct information. This is what I want, I can't speak for anyone else.

Right. It's to write articles the fan base will want to read so we will buy newspapers. I am getting to the point where, if I see his name on it or his signature snide headline, I don't want to read it. That's not to say he does not have any good articles. He does. However the many negatively slanted articles are not appealing to me. Yes, negative slants. [Ameen-Moore was "all the rage" now he only plays mop up] ... [Allen was a rock star "savior" when he arrived and now look at him]

The Ameen-Moore article could just as easily have been about what a great kid he is and how hard he works even though he has not played much. There was some of that in there but the first line set the overall tone. The tone was slanted toward the "all the rage turns to bust".

Obviously, based on posts here, many think he is "doing his job" and "there is nothing wrong" with the articles. That's cool... we all have our opinions.

He has no clue what so ever about the game of football and how to cover a team. Check out the video after the Wagner game when him and his side kick Cohen are discussing the game. they dont have a clue. they learned everything they know about football from video games. Gotta love that he's wearing a sweater that is wagner's colors during the wagner game. He seems way too happy that allen lost the start job for now. Shafer really gave him a smack down at the post game press conference after NW.

Let's see. The guy carried the ball a whopping 30 times last year and 12 times the year before. And he was "all the rage"? He may actually get more carries this year than any prior year.

Exactly. The guy had 30 carries last year and 5 TD's, and him not playing is a big story? Anyone (with a brain) who follows the team knows that Syracuse has 4 RB's better than AAM. It's not a knock on him, but a fact. That's why he's not playing, plain and simple.

If you want fluff, then go to the marshmallow factory.
If you want meat, then go to the butcher.

All I know is the coverage is much better this year than when Nolan had the duty. Rahme had years of experience and it's obviously tough to match that as a youngster. I think it's funny that so many defend Shafer, McDonald, and Bullough for learning on the job but when it comes to the first year beat writers, you guys want to hang 'em high. Give 'em a chance, not every article is going win journalism awards. I'm with Bees and Stern, I don't want the PS to be SU's marketing department. I want them to give an honest look at the program, even the negative stuff.

He did this at the Daily Orange too. It's nothing new. Fact of the matter is he's a UConn fan that clearly has a stick up his ass when it comes to writing articles. He's a great writer when he does his human interest pieces but he's not a good beat guy and comes off as overly negative.

Nailed it.

I don't need an agitator as a beat writer. I want insights and analysis that I could not otherwise get. I need the added value and information that I don't personally have nor do I readily have access to.

Otherwise, why am I reading it (outside of the human interest pieces he does)?

What really went on during Allen interview:

(Read in 50's PI voice)
"Johnny was sitting on a wooden chair, not the regular type but of the 3 legged verity. Slightly aged but cheap looking, a prefab type you knew a money pinching University would buy. I ask him...So Johnny, how do you feel about being benched? He looks puzzled. I hint he's hiding something, something big. While he's answering the question I think to myself get the next one lined up, make it a doozy. I look across the room at him...he figet's once more...I have him just where I want him. Johnny looks at his last season off gray iphone. Why's he so nervous? So I ask him and stare directly into his eyes and then text...Play Station or XBox?. I got him. He's puzzled, this isn't the rookie league, it takes a skilled seasoned journo to know and I was working at the DO while this guy was bangin cheerleaders two at a time at Oklahoma. "Uhh...XBox? he says"...I've got him. I think of my hero Rome and then say WRONG ANSWER NANCY!...Johnny gets up quickly...I feel a warm sensation go down my leg. He walks off and then I knew I had it right all along. This coaching staff lied to him and he was promised the starting job. I had my answer.

I belie there was some undisclosed infraction of team rules that compelled HCSS to not allow AAM to dress for the game.

I really enjoyed today's article on the fact that hay fever is causing HCSS'S coughing. They should just turn it into a twitter account.

Not to nitpick, but that's anything but fact as it stands today.

.

1) Sometimes people mistake "negative articles" for honest articles. Where the truth isn't a feel-good and warm and fuzzy story. You only want to read nice things about SU and uplifting stories and only good stuff. Well at 1-2 everything isn't good. The team looked poor the first 2 games of the year and they might not be any good or make a bowl. You want fluff though where everything is great in the world of SU football and nothing is going bad right now.

2) An article about how AAM is a nice kid is boring and honestly who the hell cares. Why AAM isn't playing, now that is intriguing.

I have no issue with people pointing out negative facts. This is not about that. This is slanting things negatively with innuendo and opinion with some facts interspersed. As for the AAM article, it does in fact say that Shafer said he was a good kid, working hard, etc.. but the slant is "all the rage" is now out of favor. We know no more today than last week about why AAM is not playing much. Gee, why is every third string player not playing much? Duh.

I don't want fluff unless you think real information and facts are fluff.

This was the best part in the article...the only part with some real insight into who Ameen-Moore is.:

"But Adonis has done a nice job," Shafer said. "He's continued to grow as a young man. He's doing well in school, he works hard, never complains. He's a very unselfish team player. He's a pleasure to have on the team."

We knew he was not playing. We knew why.
