we know the blitz schemes cause an issue.. we dont know whether it was protection calls or mental mistakes. Some of the slides made no sense but the calls are the calls and how much leeway do they have on the fly?

the Rb calls out based on what the sidelines says as well. did the coaches call in a protection that added to the problem? did the player do the wrong thing?

so many variables.

Mistakes on 60% or more of the pass protections. then sometimes they just missed a block.

lets hope they eliminate 50% of the physical mistakes just because Clemson is Clemson and WMU is a step down from Maryland too.
lets hope they eliminate 25% of the scheme mistakes.

given that we have 30-40% more plays less doomed. is that dooable?

WMU is going to send people and we have to have some plays designed to handle that.. the Screen game needs to hit when its called.. Clemson we had one perfect call and the Clemson dude knocked it down.

lets hope we have a few slants called cause they too are home run plays against blitzes.

take the 3-5 yd pass plays and move the ball if we have too.

WMU does not have the big physical CBs like Clemson or the DL to react to the screen as Clemson did.
Our quick passing game should be fine and once they creep up and lay off the blitz a bit, bomb city I hope.

yeah, WMU has the typical solid MAC profile: speed and scoring ability on the offensive side, but not nearly enough on defense. if we can execute decently on offense for the first time all year and our D plays like they did in week 1 and for most of last week, we will be fine.

Play calling can fix a bad OL. If the plays are quick 3 step drops or passing into the open space the ball can get out fast.
I thought play calling was atrocious. The OL wasn't great but Clemson was sending more guys than we could block and we continued to go empty. The flat and middle were open. Against Western Michigan we won't have the same issues unless they blitz and if they do call screens or slants which are easy routes to complete.

Run the ball early and get the TE involved in the passing game early.

They will spend the rest of the day chasing.

If we can't run on these guys, then worrying about the passing game is probably a waste of time.

I guess, but the reviews have shown that was seldom the case. it just seemed they sent too many. if you throw the slant against a blitz they also know where the hot read is and jump it.

i do agree though that at some point you have to understand they cant make a block even if it the perfect call for what the D is bringing.

My biggest gripe about the Clemson game, everything else I don't really care about because you're playing the best team in the country.

Just as the O-line can't block every guy blitzing, their DB's can't cover all routes. It's up to the coaching staff to make those adjustments. WR's were open at times.

Mental mistakes are the most correctable
Tommy / babers must scheme and they are I told tommy the only way to stop the blitz is to beat the blitz ( punch the bully in the mouth )
Have backs / te help
Play design motion etc
I remember last summer in camp the O was struggling I urged Tommy to run sure enough he called me and said what all dads want to hear ... I was right !!! he ran and the o was good.
I said don’t listen to me talk w coach I think until the O gets rolling you have to make plays
But again I’m not the coach by any means it’s just my two cents . Heck I’d like to see a huddle until they get rolling to have a ? Answered or a quick reminder. To me you coach what you have not what you want if you aren’t winning . Again this is just a plumber talking not a coach .

We haven’t proved we can run yet either
But this week I have a feeling we are gonna click

we need to find 2-3 runs that work just to keep the pressure off the passing game.

ditch the jumbo goalline stuff, no more tight formations

OR, even better - show tight formation at goalline, then RPO out of it.

Or have Tommy keep it on the bootleg on 1st down, rather than hand off to the RB like everybody 100% knows he's going to. He literally could have jogged it in vs. Clemson on 1st and 2nd down had he done this.
By 3rd down, the QB keeper is no longer a surprise, so they stopped him.
Even just a little misdirection goes a LONG way in tight quarters like that.

And I'll say it again - that TE pop pass we used w/ Ravian last year was MONEY inside the 10.

We're clearly not just going to out-muscle our opponents and get it punched in, as much as they might wish they could do that.

We tried the pop pass on 4th down Clemson covered it so tommy tried to run it in and failed Clemson scouted it out well

Tommy was also very close to breaking a few scrambles but got tripped up by a finger tip. You have to think that anyone else won't be as fast as Clemson which means those scrambles turn in to 5-10 yard gains and a few more first downs which tires the defense and gives ours a rest.

They also had the RB covered outside.

It was like they had 15 guys on the field on D. And all of them could run, tackle, shed blocks, cover, and probably dance.
The dancing was the worst part of it all

Been saying same thing

Play calling was good the first 20 mins. The third Q was awful as we never adjusted to what Clemson was doing in the 2nd Q.

2 good drives in the 1st half vs the best defense we’ll see all year - but came away with 6 points. Play calling was good on those drives until the red zone.

2nd half was missed opportunities off of TO’s and more bad red zone offense. But tons of bad playcalling and implosions all over the O.
