So, we only got 1 commitment from opening weekend for visits?

We need this many guys for the 2 deep, IMO:
  • 2 QBs competing for the back-up spot. If Angeli is not healthy to start the season, we need them both to be ready to play.
  • 2 RBs good enough for the 2 deep. You can't count on Nixon getting a 6th year, and we need better than him, anyway.
  • 1 WR good enough to be a starter on the outside. I'll take everybody's word on all the unproven guys we are slotting in as starters.
  • We got our TE, so that's good (1 more toward the 20).
  • I count 8 guys on the roster on the OL who should make the 2 deep (Washington, Mack, Cruz, Stewart, Rice, Bertrand, Shevchenko, Mann, and Pringle). I think we need at least 2 guys good enough to start, maybe 3, because our O Line was terrible last year, and there's not much reason to have faith in the guys who are returning.
  • On the DL, I only see 3 guys who look good enough - Hastings, Omopariola and Perry. So we need like 5 guys there, and 3 of them have to be good enough to start.
  • At LB we have Tremble, Moultrie and DesLauriers. We need probably 2 more guys there, since Tremble will play some time as the edge rusher.
  • I only see like 3 or 4 guys in the secondary that I feel like we could count on (Samuel, Peal, Perry and Kerr). We've been hit hard by losses in the back. I think we need 5 more guys back there, 3 of whom are good enough to start, when you also count in the nickel.
That's your 20.
On the DL there were a couple guys who played toward the end of the season that Fran spoke highly of and anticipate that they will contribute this year (Nyandoro, Nissi, and Pray). I would guess they are going to add an Edge or 2 and same with DT.

I agree 2 OL with experience is HUGE

They absolutely need 2 QB's. Belin will not be a QB next season (if he remains with the team).

I would say at least 1RB with starter pedigree. Fran loves Kerr who he moved to RB and Tylik. They only have Coleman who will compete.

I would be surprised if they don't bring in at least 2 WR's

LB you can't forget Gary Bryant- I think with the new system and a full year with the team he will be much better. 1 definitely, but 2 would be good.

Secondary is the deepest position group on the team. If healthy, Tedarius Hughes will play as a freshman. Braheem Long will also play. They need one more safety but I'd be surprised if they add any cornerbacks.

Id say they add anywhere between 12-20

Thanks for the feedback. I am far from the most informed fan, but I do observe, and have opinions.
I'm hopeful that Fran can make it happen again this year.

I forgot about Brant, so that's a good addition. Thanks.
I've heard that we have all these talented young WRs and DBs, but we've been told that for the last couple years, and some of them certainly were. Fran can identify talent.

But teams grow from experience, and we have lost a lot of young talent recently who had gained that.
That's my biggest concern, the amount of the turnover in personnel.
I see that we're "statistically average" in that regard, but we do not shop at the top end of the table. We need to retain and train up our players.

I really hope Angeli is healthy, and that we upgrade both lines.
Fran needs to win 8 or 9 this year for us to draw top players again the following year.
6 wins won't do.

I get the feeling we're intentionally being quiet, but our known commit was never reported visiting, I assume the Orange emoji from the D-staff last night means we got another, but that was almost 24 hours ago with no announcement from what player that is. Makes me think there's an intentionality to keep things under the radar.

Which is frustrating for me personally as someone who's impatient, but I also get it. Don't advertise you got a player so other teams don't start getting in the ear of the younger guys we already have at that position to try to poach.
And we have a winner

Looking for kids that will start and or multiple year commitments

The window to enter the portal is open for 2 weeks. Can sign with a team anytime after that as long as already in the portal. That being said you will see commitments this week so they are here for the winter semester.
if they want to be on campus for spring ball, they have to do it in this window and be a matriculated student. Doesn't make any sense to stay at your school or drop out and not be in school for a semester and then come in during the summer although Angeli did the latter.

If i’m one of these 4,000+ transfers i’m not
dicking around waiting to make a decision. Unless you’re a top transfer, nobody is holding a spot for you. I’m making a decision and getting my spot as fast as possible.

Also, how ’d up is this sheet show where the playoff teams are penalized having to worry about the portal, kids leaving, etc. when you’re still playing. This mess needs to get fixed asap.

Especially once the portal closes, coaches at that point can’t make space for you anymore.

Fran’s biggest things he needs to overcome:
It really was just the QB issue
I have fixed the defense
It doesn’t ALWAYS snow this much!

Is the defensive staff cooking!?

Is Vince the John Odeirna of the football team? J.O. is the D coordinator of the men's lacrosse team and often signals there's an incoming commit just before it's announced. Hope so.

You said two deep

Same thing. The 2nd stringer has to be good enough to play, or we don't HAVE "two deep" at that position. Like at QB last year. Being on the 2 deep, to me, means they will be expected to play.

If guys don't sign by the time the semester starts (in about 10-15 days, depending on the school), then they're not playing spring ball. If they don't play spring ball, they just cut their chances of making a team in half.

And, yes, you're right - with literally thousands of guys in the portal, many are not going to "get a bag", and will find themselves dropping down a level to find a home.

But if they can't get signed in the next 2 weeks, most of those guys are not going to play football until next August when someone's camp opens.
I answered the question you asked, “[T]he window is only open for two weeks, right?”
You didn’t ask whether someone should sign before classes start, but you did get the answer right.
Then again, you probably knew the answer along.

Makes sense but how do you insure multi-year commitments? Can you tie NIL to second year or you just hope they stay?

OG is stll getting his commercials run around SU. DId they re-up his deal to multi year?

That's your 20.

I appreciate the approach here, but it seems like you've thrown away the freshman classes the last two years

Transfers are incredibly valuable and I get why you'd want so many, but the math also has to align. You sign large HS classes the last two years, you lose 25..26 whatever it was to the portal, more to graduation, etc

I think my biggest takeaway from your post (because I agree with most in the area of needs as well) is that if players from the last two HS classes can't fill some of these gaps, we're in trouble.

Russell for example is going to garner a lot of expectation that he can be a starter or make the two deep at WR. I certainly didn't expect DeSlauriers to be as good as he was or Samuel to that matter, so I have faith in the incoming freshman or RS freshman/SO players on the team as well.

We'll see how it all shakes out. I just don't see us signing 20 guys in the portal and (hopefully) it's a good thing because the younger guys are ready

ALL that to say I am cool with signing guys with experience at the more 'need experience' positions

When do we think the commits, start being announced? Seems like other schools started yesterday.
