Do we miss his recruiting chops, or can this staff hold their own? I know there was some concern about losing him and his ability to recruit. What say you?

I would say we'd miss his south FL connections - but it seems like it hasn't yielded all that much.

I love Ish and think Estime is a player... But Acosta grabbing quality NJ kids might offset that enough.

This seems like a great class, who were his recruits?

Who? In all seriousness, good riddance.

In Cool Kid We Trust.

That's comedy gold right there.

He didn't yield anything late for ncstate. I actually still follow him on twitter. Here is his MO:

1. Join staff
2. Set up school related hashtag slogan
3. Tweet at new fans asking them for great restaurant suggestions
4. Tweet some motivational messages to fire up fan base.

That's where he is now with ncstate. Here's what they have to look forward to:

5. Recruit some south Florida kids with academic issues.
6. Get into twitter arguments with fans from his school.
7. Get defensive as fans question his ability
8. Leave school

Please Tweet him his formula. OMG, hilarious and spot on.

Meh. Hope the door didn't hit you in the asz on the way out.

Steve Ishmael is an A-list recruit. SEC level. Brisley might end up being productive but other than those two we won't miss McDonald.

Edouard is at juco

This years kids:

Robinson - offer pulled went to fau
Levine - decomitted went to temple. Rumor of offer pulled
KDavis - decomitted for Oregon state then flipped to Florida. Frankly, under normal circumstances would not have been recruited to Florida
Grimes - decomitted for Marshall
Spence - offer pulled grades. Didn't sign with anyone. I liked this kid

Point - none followed him to nc state and none went to p5 schools save Davis

Remains to be seen if we missed on these kids. Shaf recruited south Florida for Marrone. My hunch is well be fine down there but if we get 3 kids from Georgia and none from south Florida it'll be a wash

I think we have a very solid class and helped pull some of these players. He was not the main recruiter listed but continued his relationship and did what he preached, "getting kids to commit to a school not a coach". I have to give him credit, he was not happy but he continued to recruit as he was being payed to do until he left. I do think him and SS have a continued mutual respect, and he was not happy as most of us wouldn't be when you receive that kind of news. I think it was a mutual understanding at the end that things were not going to fit here for him. That being said, I wish him the best of luck and would hope we could close this chapter and move on without getting in a dirt clod fight.

This whole thread sounds like an indictment of Shafer. As a defensive minded head coach, offensive coordinator is your most important staff hire.

Well sure. Him letting McDonald go was an indictment - an acknowledgement - that he made a mistake.

I didn't think that was in question.

i don't know how you go from mcdonald to lester either. i worry he's just throwing at the wall and doesn't know what he wants to do. bring in 10 million WR and then say whoops lets get more TE

unless what he wants to do is hire guys he knows from northwest michigan territories

Not sure Lester has given anyone the warm and fuzzies.

Whatever. New class, new year, new hope.

Shafer should be coaching for his job this year.

I just don't want it to be lost on all the McDonald hate. He didn't hire himself.

And, as Millhouse pointed out, we replaced him with another guy lacking OC experience at this level.

It's a somewhat fascinating risk, but I really do hope it works out.

it's not really lester specifically

he either prioritized recruiting so much that he went with an offense he doesn't actually like with mcdonald. that scares me

or he did like the offense but became so disenchanted with it really fast that he changed gears entirely. scares me

or he likes both offenses the same, doesn't really care, and it's just about putting people he trusts in that spot. scares me.

i hate invoking grob because pointing out a similarity implies that shafer is also the worst ever - i don't mean that. but gerg didn't know what he wanted to do either.

patterson at TCU changed gears but that was after many years and it seemed to be very thought out - he hired guys from offenses he wanted to emulate, not guys he had much history with

Most likely IMO.

i dont blame McD or Lester to be honest. We dont have a QB. I guess that falls on everyone somewhat, but u can not win at any level with the sub-par qb's we throw out there. There is a reason that we were a top 30 team when Nassib was a senior. He was just ok, but the offense suited him. He could throw a football as well, something Hunt cant do.

Get a qb, we will be an 8 win team on the reg.

Hunt can get us to 7 or 8 wins this coming season IF, IF the OL performs much better than last year (don't go there with the injury BS) and IF the secondary gets some help.

IMO if we get 8 wins, its in spite of Hunt. He has the worst throwing ability of maybe any qb we have ever had. His passes are worst than Mike G's were during the Va Tech game on tuesday.

Play within his game but that includes his running ability, rely on power running, call pass plays he can make.
