So with WVU set to leave now

looks like if su has a decent legal team the big east is dead in the water-

they have established a monetary figure that will buy you out-so if su can find the funds we cant be held-and who is too say a payment plan cant be done

they have also hurt us by letting wv out early and removing any say we have in the league-this also sounds like a slam dunk for us-

i almost think this isnt over quite yet-2012 football just may be acc if the good doctor and the troll get aggressive

If they replace WVU with BSU, where's the harm? We don't have any say in the way the league is managed at the moment because that part of the partnership rules.

All this has done is establishing that you can get out this year for $20M IF we have a team in place to replace you.

If they don't let us out after next season ... the BE will have 19 BB teams for 2013-14. They'll have to split the BB TV money pie 19 ways (instead of 16).

They'll let us go.

Exactly, and at probably a 1/4 to 1/3 of what WVU paid.

Why the hell is WVFU willing to pony up some dough and we aren't? I wonder if the ACC would be willing to help out like the B12 is?
The Big 12 *NEEDS* West Virginia to play a Big 12 conference schedule this year. Otherwise their TV deal could be re-opened, and not in a positive way. This is why the B12 is going to pay $9 million of the $20M to get WVU out.

The ACC has no such immediate need, and therefore really has no reason to shell out ~$18M for a smiliar deal.

And for the other half of the original question, WVU is willing to pay it because the B12 would've filled the vacancy with another available team if the 'Neers couldn't get there for next season.

TCU paid $5M.

Wrong. TCU has paid the BE nothing to date and their AD declined to confirm it was even $5M when they announced they were joing the Big12.

"Del Conte says TCU will pay an exit fee, but declined to confirm it was the $5 million required by the Big East policy."

Yes, the Big East should show integrity, not add anyone, and just roll over and die as a league. Because trying to survive is somehow hypocritical.

Idiotic viewpoint that sounds like something a four year old girl would argue for...not an adult with any real world experience.

It should have done those things when it was prudent.

But The Dude says the B12 will get $35 million per team lol. So if the B12 is worth that much they shouldn't care :p

I understand what you are saying. But...they don't have a team to replace WVU. They might soon. They might not.

They do have a backup plan in case the Boise Bailout fails. This is the 'some schools play each other twice in the same season plan' that was mentioned in a Star Ledger article yesterday.

If it is okay to do this to replace WVU, why is it not okay to do this to replace Pitt or Syracuse? Shouldn't the rules be consistent?

To take your point a bit further, if the "rules" are not applied consistently, it provides further grounds for accelerating the move, and minimizes the damages to the Big East. It's hard for them to play the victim when replacement schools are in hand, and they are attempting to keep us and Pitt for an extra year out of spite. Marinatto better be careful with this scheduling - making us play teams twice on the road rather than home and home costs us financially. Even though TV money gets retained in reduction of our exit fee, and we've lost our right to vote, it doesn't seem to me that you can take away home games in an unfair manner from a member institution. We still have SOME rights as members for so long as they intend to keep us here.

Don't be so sure of that, Syracuse can certainly pay it, I just think they probably won't although I am sure there will be discussions the next few days

Not true. If Syracuse had the money, we would pay it and be on our way to the ACC lickety split.

They could pay it out of the endowment. They absolutely have the money. Whether they choose to use it is another matter.

The University has a substantial endowment. They could do it if they had to.

Money is the issue a lack of it isnt

Let me rephrase - we can't afford it. Otherwise this is a no brainer we would pay and be out of this mess.

Nobody should be shocked this is happening. Its basically been in the books for a while now considering how close they were on the final price, one would just ask for more at the last second but they obviously have eventually settled.

It won't be long for Pitt and SU to be in the ACC. That said, Pitt isn't too happy WVU gets to bolt right away, Louisville isn't either.
