A few observations after a game that ultimately won't be much of a barometer as we head into ACC play next week. Having said that, it's still worth noting what looked good/bad since, at the end of the day, you still have to go out and win this game.

-- For two weeks, this team has done a lot of little things right. Whatever Wagner is or isn't, they cost themselves any opportunity of hanging in the game by muffing two snaps, dropping a bunch of passes and turning the ball over a bunch. Cuse, meanwhile, took care of the ball for the most part, tackled decently, played four full quarters, did a nice job on the two short kickoffs, made a long FG ... just did a lot of those things that get lost in a huge blowout, but are important factors when you add them all up.

-- Special teams has been, by far, the most impressive unit on this team. Cordy had a long punt return and did a nice job picking up the punt at the end of the half and getting four yards while also not allowing another 5-10 seconds to drain off the clock. Riley had the nice return (both returns had something to do with the difference in talent between a P5 school and an FCS school, but still ...). The FG unit looked excellent for a second straight week, the coverage units didn't get tested but were fine for what was required, there was the big blocked punt and then the clothesline of the punter on the other. We had the one beautiful punt that was faircaught at the 15. Just a second straight week of flawless play there and by far -- by a country mile -- the best unit on this team.

-- Jarveon Howard is our best runner. I don't know about how well he blocks or knows the playbook or secures the ball, etc. I also know he's not Bo Jackson from Super Tecmo, but we need to be better running the ball and I'd be really surprised if he isn't the one splitting carries with Neal at some point this season. I'd actually like to see him get the most carries.

-- On the flip side, Neal is OK. Not bad in terms of hitting a hole, but doesn't have much power and has almost no wiggle. Groh made the point that he's got to make a man at the second level miss at some point. He doesn't do this. His long runs are the ones where you don't get touched and you just run. Strickland is less than OK, IMO. Not trying to crush the kid and he made a real nice cut on his longer TD run, setting up the defender outside, planting and busting up the middle for the score. But the play before that he got pulled down, from behind, with a full head of steam by a player from Wagner and landed on his backside. He's just not an ACC level RB, IMO.

-- Dungey doesn't look pretty very often but he's a guy who makes plays. Thought he did a nice job after getting pummeled on that one run in the end zone by 17 Wagner defenders, of avoiding getting hit the rest of the day. Hard guy to grade b/c he's unconventional but another nice game from him.

-- Tommy? Not sure. He didn't get much help but he didn't do too much either. I'm sure he'll be fine but still would love to see him come in and taste a little success before the calendar turns to October.

-- Nice to see some younger WRs get in the game. Not sure Taj's TD reception means he's headed for a Marvin Harrison-like career, but it's worth noting that he smelled the goalline there and got into the end zone. Thought Nykeim showed speed we' don't see from the other guys -- Custis included -- on that shovel pass/end-around deal. Outran the pursuit from the inside and turned in a really nice gain. Also ran past the defense and created a ton of separation on the TD catch. Would love to see if that translates for those two in bigger games down the road.

-- Solid game for Custis, terrible again for Butler and Riley is so small he looks outmatched physically (not in terms of speed, but sheer size and strength) even against an FCS team.

-- Ravian Pierce -- one catch, 3 yards. Should have made a play on that throw in the end zone but also feel like we may need to do a better job of forcefeeding him a few touches.

-- OL was OK, still reserving judgement. DL was excellent even with just two sacks. Need to see them next week to get an accurate gauge on what we have there, but at least nice to see them dominating tonight. Nice play by Richards on the pick.

-- LBs -- thought the activity was good but the tackling was only OK. Probably an issue all year for that group

-- Young DBs made some plays, which is great. Hopefully that leads to some confidence. Frederick actually got picked on a little with that back-shoulder throw. Jury still out there too, but some promising kids looking down the road, IMO.

Overall: These games can be tricky b/c if you don't win 62-10 everyone will be wringing their hands but when you do win by that margin everyone says it doesn't count. I'd say, at the end of the day, that there remain concerns at RB/WR/LB and maybe DB, and I know we're improved but I'm not sure we're really good at OL and DL, BUT there is at least a slim chance that they can battle with FSU and dream of a 3-0 start, which would be really nice heading into a game we should win against UConn. Will be interesting to watch regardless.

Not necessarily. We did exactly what we were supposed to today and hung 62. The prior years although we scored 50 we still struggled to run and score TD's inside the RZ against CCSU and the FCS the year before. This year we have shown we capitalize inside the RZ and have put up huge numbers these first 2 games. We haven't come close to these numbers in prior years.

As for FSU this may be their worst team in a couple decades. This is far from a slim chance. THis is a very very winnable game. Would be very disappointed if it isn't at very worst an extremely close game. I have been calling for the win since the schedule was released

Hope you're right. I agree on the red zone efficiency and that's important, but I just think it's hard to know too much until you play a legit P5 opponent and are able to put together a really good game. I'm not crushing this group but we need someone other than custis to step up to help Dungey out and we are still extremely raw defensively. a good game vs. FSU would be awesome regardless of where this FSU team ranks in the past 20 years of the program's history.

My thoughts.

Best specials in years. The Hoff and Kid from Il are as good a combo as we have had in a very long time.
Young WRs look the part. Butler just cant catch. Not sure if he can pull it together.
Howard is a stud. Needs more touches
Shy brings the wood
Young DBs are stars waiting to bloom. Coley is one jacked kid.
Tommy has a long ways to go. He might get beat out by Chance next year. 7×7 is a little different from real action. He throws a nice ball but is he a gamer?

Good analysis I would agree all around.

I like the kicker.

No point putting much stock in anything else considering the opponent but thought we looked good. Team seems well coached and guys know where they are supposed to be. Makes it easier to unleash true freshman when the team seems pretty poised overall.

No clue what to expect next week especially given FSU's current play being so awful making me certain they show up and bring their best vs us.

Last year 50-7 vs CCSU. Year before 33-7 vs Colgate. Hanging a rather easy 62 while doing pretty much the same thing last week tells me this years team is pretty far ahead of the prior 2 installments. RZ efficiency is much improved. Run game has drastically improved and we will be just fine with the number of young WR's we have complimenting Custis. It looks like Custis will be the clear #1 with a wr by committee gobbling up the rest of the catches. If Butler can ever figure out how to catch the ball watch out. The kid can create separation he just has a set of rocks for hands. ST's is much improved , which can't be understated and the defense is actually creating turnovers. Despite this being a "tune up" game, if you combine what you saw this week vs Wagner and last week @WMU i think we can take a great deal away from this. That takeaway is we are very improved and will only get better as these young guys get game reps and confidence. The future is bright, but this year you can shoot for 7 or maybe 8 wins.

Looked like Shy was in on probable running plays and came out on obvious passing plays. Looked strong against the run.

I think saying dungey doesnt look pretty very often is not a fair statement. Yes he misses some throws but what qb doesnt. He made a lot of good to great throws today.

There were times today when SU reminded me a little of SU under Donnie McPherson. The O would make a bad play, putting themselves in a third and long, and then score a TD.

I may be dontae’s biggest defender here but he just doesn’t make mistakes. Something to be said about that.
Not gonna jump off the page, just goes to work.
I also think he's played out of position.

In a different universe he kills people from the slot

He has good instincts. Plays downhill. Im impressed with Shy Armstrong and Richards. Im not impressed with Whit he is going to get steamrolled against ACC backs. In the secondary i like 23. Kid has NFL size. Once these young kids get some rep we are going to be a tough out.

hb And you know Aime is a gamer because you have observed him play in a college game????????

I didnt comment on Chance being a gamer. My comment was about Tommy.

The Tommy who has thrown 14 passes in his college career so far? Yep, that’s enough for a blanket comment like that
Tommy became an elite recruit more as a result of his camp performances than his HS game performances. I posed a question not a blanket statement. I personally think that Chance and Tommy are two of the best QB recruits we have had since DM and KJ. They are different style QBs and it is going to be interesting to see which QB ends up winning the job.

Moe doesn’t have any wiggle?

He had that one run where he faked like THREE different guys outta their jocks.

I agree with whomever said that in a different universe, Strick is in the slot.
Moe too.

Want to see Jarveon tote the rock some more.
He looks - and runs - like a P5 RB1 should.
He and Adams should be awesome for us next year.

Welcome back Nykeim! We missed you.

Szmyt happens!!

Love the kid. My point was just that there isn’t much traditional about him. Everything looks a little funky. But it’s extremely effective which is all I care about.

In his game action so far the WR have dropped passes, fumbled, fell down after the pass was thrown, the OL has been awful for him and the center can’t get him the ball in the gun, I think drawing ant conclusions on what the kid is capable off of these first two games is a bit premature.

Im not drawing any conclusions. Im asking a question.

When given time, ED can make all throws...contrary to the opinions of some board experts. All you need to watch are the td passes to N Johnson and the last back shoulder td pass to Custis.

Yep the slant to taj was right on the money. Made a lot of good throws and none looked funky.

He hits like a ton of bricks. Really like Cullen in there.
