Big Star's three studio albums in the early 70s were hugely influential for many of the alternative rock bands of the 80s and 90s, most notably The Replacements.

One could do worse than taking a dive into their first two albums, #1 Record and Radio City. I don't think there are any bad songs there.

There’s a great Big Star doc on Netflix. Hugely influential band. Any alt/indie rock band w/ some twang, pedal steel, etc. owes them a great debt.
