Again, 3 years later. I realize Shafers demise was the Virginia and pitt games, 3-5 in game management calls, and getting our future star qb injured inside 5:00 of a blowout on the road. That said, all along this staff was learning on the job, under the bright lights, at the cost of wins and wins only. These kids would run through a wall for these guys. Lesters offense with ED healthy started to roll and the defense was 1-2 years away but we did have young talent undergoing baptism by fire. So now we hit the reset button, lose key recruits, bring in a new staff and wait 2-3 years for a result. Shaf was one contract year away. An original 5 year deal gives him next year to show something and i really feel like we would have popped next year. Scott Shafer would have been a lifer, a cuse guy. I drove from albany to the spring game every year the last 3 to wait in line after just to chat and shake the mans hand. He exudes quality and intensity and is such a quality individual. So now we hit the reset button again to hire an up and coming offensive guru who will use cuse as a stepping stone for a better p5 job down the road. Gonna miss shaf and most of his staff. Would love to retain Acosta and daoust somehow. Its a sad day.

Two questions...

What evidence do you have that SS was learning on the job? All I saw were repeat errors from week to week.

Given that the alum we hired to coach the team seven years ago left town, what makes you think that the guy who has no ties to the area was going to be a "lifer?"

I don't think we're hitting the reset button. Someone got us stuck on rewind and we finally got around to hitting play.

Why? Bc Shafer wouldnt get a shot like this anywhere else. He is a blue collar guy that actually connected with the cuse. Any success he had here wouldnt have resulted in him looking at other gigs.

i think he was improving in some thing but not in some others

System, staff, recruiting. ..all reset. Think about the inner workings of a d1 program. This staff was young and connected with 18 year old kids.

Yeah, because of all the colleges we represent a blue collar school

Sometimes programs need a reset more than they need stability.

Apparently that's impossible to replicate! I wonder if the 33 year old Foster has trouble relating to the 18 year olds.

Oh, I'm sure if he strung together a few eight or nine win seasons and, say a Michigan came calling, SS would just hang up. Because blue collar, or hard nosed, or any other cliche that really isn't based on actual evidence.

Nope, a few winning seasons and he would still be here. If you ever met the man, he probably hasn't ever dreamed about making a million + per year. Him and his family were all about the cuse. So lets bring in a west coast or Midwestern dude and see how that works out.
