Southerland seems to always be...

What's amazing it's not just ranked teams. Any BCS team and he shoots 0% against them over a 3 year career.

Against any other team he shoots >70%.

We're not making any final fours going 1-10 on three pointers in a first half of a game. We need Dirty South to get some pressure of KJo.

non-factor?? he does not need to make his shots to be a factor.

Agree he was ok tonight. He missed 2-3 shots, wasn't a overall positive but he wasn't a hinderance and that is key.

Him getting PT is the bigger deal. His shooting vs tougher comp will come around, provided he continues to get the experience in these games. You could tell he was rushing his shot.

To me this is the same scenario to Joseph his freshman year. Early on he played great, but in bigger games JB would yank him quickly for any mistake, and soon there after he barely played. When he did get in, he was unsure of himself and got out of sorts. As a result he was of no help in big games at the end of the year. I really think as long as Southerland keeps getting at least 15 min, his offense will come around against talented teams.

JS doesn't have the stones to play under pressure. He's legit against teams we know we're gonna beat. Flat out.

He buckled when we started him last year. He buckled in the Garden. He was not good tonight.

Prior to this season he was the self-professed team clown. Silly dances, etc. I think that belies his lack of big game confidence. I think he's more serious this year, but it just seems like the bright lights scare him.

I mean lighting up Colgate is meaningless. We need 8 and 5 against Stanford more than 20 against EMU. I hope he evolves.

Also, that linear regression clown might be right. Dar Dar Club Club or whomever. Pretty much what dude's said has been right.

interesting...I don't think JB brings him in for he rebounding prowess or his ability to create shots for his teammates...his in there to hit shots, don't kid yourself. His pt will diminish greatly come Big East time if he doesn't produce, just like coach did with him last season...he'll need to prove he's a ptp'er...just sayin...

He was terrible on offense but he worked hard on the boards and d when he was in so at least he has that going for him.

Still has the tag that he can't play against good competition though (rightfully) - had his chances to make shots but no dice.

I agree with this completely. I've thought that many times watching JS against big teams.

Doubtful it comes together this year. Hopeful that it will.

I expect that next year he'll be capable in these games.

So, are you saying the same things about Dion or anyone else who takes and misses a couple shots in a game?

He disappears in big games. He needs to show me he can make shots against a BCS team. Cant deny that.

I feel the same way - especially the first portion. A lot of games I feel like he really doesn't contribute a ton outside of his shooting, but he was very active today. He was involved in rebounding, and had some nice hustle plays to give us (or keep) the possession. His defense isn't perfect, but the effort is there, and it's not awful.

I clashed with a couple Jamesiacs the other night for daring to suggest he had as many limitations as possibilities. My last remark was wake me when he performs against quality competition.

My point is not to say "I told you so." I was actually impressed with how he played tonight and came away with a higher opinion of James. He scrapped, had three rebounds in the first half -- even if they weren't necesarily a man's rebounds -- and generally looked like he belonged out there against other quality athletes. More important, it looked like he THOUGHT he belonged out there with other legit athletes.

His shot just didn't fall. It happens. I feel better about him than when he was scoring in buckets against garbage.

He got more minutes then Rak right now, and our rebounding was ok. Heck we were missing all kind of threes and won.

Agree Southerland would play himself out of games last year as a hinderance to the team with bad ball movement and lack of rebounding. Thats just more weight to carry to his confidence.

Maybe promising him something like 10-15 a game for the first 6 Big East games will loosen up the confidence in his shot. He might be more worried about just staying on the floor right now. Maybe he thinks he can get pulled for his shooting also?

I don't believe Rak is stealing James 10mpg right now though. But I also believe CJ will average atleast 25 this year if James doesn't step up. The question is how will Rak and Southerland split the rest.

Want to light a fire under CJ, Rak and Southerland? Tell them were going to a threee guard lineup.

Useless comment...don't reply or pay any attention to it then...

useless comment for a useless thread... congrats on being the 233424535 person to make the exact same thread.

He is what he is deal with it.

Hard to disagree. He seems to not set up correctly, rushes his shot. It's liek he can't catch up to the pace of big time competition.

Agree, Bilas made a couple of remarks about some of those quick ill-advised shots...

For such a useless thread, you've already posted twice about same...maybe after your 3rd time, you can add something worth while...thanks on the congrats...;)

I am not. I was just rendering my opinion that JS's main role is to come in off the bench and offer an offensive spark, and it's usually by his outside shooting. I think he himself admits this too. I'm not saying he can't contribute in any other way, but that that's generally why he enters the game. He just really appears to struggle doing so with better to stellar competition, that's what his history's been to date.

He was aiming again tonight, but he did look like he belonged - he played hard, didn't disappear.

And regarding his poor play against BCS teams, it's easy to forget that we'd have been swept by those Hoyas last year without Southerland's solid play in DC.

unfortunetly i get alerts when i get quoted in threads. I have already posted something worthwhile, he is what he is, you posting this thread probably wont make him shoot better in meaningful games.

kid hasnt done a whole lot other than show flash's of brilliance-

i think the more minutes he gets this season the better he will be- not sure he plays at the same speed yet as starters-

but we need him to play-his size and the threat of his shot when he is hot-he could be a valuable piece also with humor, right now i think they could use a laugh or 2

Southerland is an empty calories guy, builds up stats against terrible teams and disappears in meaningful games.
