Why are we allowed to have two players wear the number 1 jersey? I would think there's a rule against that.

In fact, as I look at the roster, I see quite a few players with duplicate numbers. When did the rules change?

We had Diamond Ferri play both offense and defense in a game, and conceivably we could have two or more of those guys on special teams. I'm kind of shocked that with 99 potential uniform numbers and only 85 scholarship players that they permit this.

At some point it became ok for an offensive player and defensive player to have the same #. I don't know when it happened.

But man is it annoying. Is that Broyld out there in coverage? No it's Whigham. I should know, they're both #1!

I think #1 thru 10, we have 2 of each.

If Mitch Kimble ever sees the field at QB, does that mean we're not allowed to insert Eskridge on a goal line play like he has done in the past?

Completely agree. Let the walk-ons have duplicate numbers, but it is strange to have offensive and defensive players using the same number.

In a somewhat (but not really) related story, it was nice to see the ref botch the word "sixty" with "sixteen" the other night, maybe it was our font. Saved Hickey the public embarrassment of a needless false start, and allowed Keenan Hale to get his name on TV.

there was never a rule that didnt allow duplicate numbers. at one point there wasnt even a rule about being on the field at the same time.

in the 70;s teams dressed 120 kids

SU has 105 players ... 99 potential numbers.

It's been allowed for years. Just as long as they're not both on the field at the same time.

The unique thing, to me, are the dup numbers of players that could conceivably play special teams at the same time. Suppose at that point it's just pick one or the other but numbers 2, 8, etc could potentially both be needed as special teamers. Also, with Winfields position switch we now have 2 defensive #11's.

Very good point.

I don't think SU has allowed it for years. Maybe they have. But I used to know the players numbers well back in my diehard days of the 90s, and can't recall too many situations (ok, can't recall any) where two scholarship players had the same #. I doubt it was just dumb luck that everyone happened to like a different #.

Watch us get a personal foul called..

That will be the end of duplicate scholarship #s, right there and then. I'd hope anyway.

Same here. I don't recall this being the case until only 2 or 3 years ago.

Watch me lose my mind and participate in a full board melt down if that happens. I've avoided them until now but that would cause me to flip my ****.

Moskal isn't seeing the field this year.

99% right but you never know. I was more interested in the special teams numbers I had mentioned. Seems like something we could find a way to mess up.

It has been allowed in the past.

Only difference now is they allow scholarship players to have the same numbers on offense and defense (which is ridiculous).

Well ... #18 is now available.

Nobody wants a number in the 60's.

Unless you're a pitcher at Spring Training

Most notable example I remember of late is ND's 2012 team that went to the national title. Everett Golson and Manti Te'o both wore #5.

Exactly. That's why I was thinking that this can't be possible.

The NFL used to have rules about uniform numbers - Center had to be in the 50s, the offensive guards had to have numbers in the 60s, tackles in the 70s and ends in the 80s. Running backs in the 20s, 30s or 40s, quarterbacks from 10 to 19.

None of our players would ever sign with the Yankees. No single digits available. Of course, if the contract had 7 digits, I'm sure they could find a way to live with it.

NFL still has rules about numbers

People complaining about numbers now?! The amount of ill will people have for "their" team is so odd. Lose a game and it's open season on anything and everything.

"The cheese sauce with nachos is too soupy. Other teams get this right! Why do we suck at cheese!???"
