Special team changes

Depth chart lists Gulley and Rene.

That would make this part of Nolan's article misleading:

"They’ll replace Steve Rene, who handled punt and kickoff returns the past two games."

Gulley for Morgan is a nothing to see here change. I hardly knew Morgan was back there.

If it makes you feel better, Gulley will get caught from behind. He doesn't have the speed to break away, unless we're playing Stony Brook.

Was hoping to hear Kobena's name, but I guess they think it's risky to put him on KO returns. Hopefully we see him at WR.

yeah. these changes probably tell us a lot about the offense given how marrone has the NFL approach there

more Kobena at WR, more Moore/Broyld at RB?

weak correlation maybe but look at scoring when Kobena plays and when he doesn't.

then look at scoring when Gulley gets 10 carries (even weaker cherry picking there, I know)

I really have no problem with kick returns. Should have been clearer on that. Some kick off returns have actually been pretty good. Punt returns are the issue. If punt returns and place kicking are corrected, it will make special teams as a whole look much better.

We definitely need Kobena back. I don't know the 40 times, but on a football field, there's no one on the offense who is faster.

I also think we need to stick with Smith more. I like the burst, and I think he's starting to get some momentum. Need to ride that a little longer, and tell him no running sideways. Still cut as needed obviously, but trust your blocking, don't bounce it too much because you're not the turn the corner type.

Broyld, eh, wish we were seeing him, but we're not. Maybe he fumbles every play in practice. I don't really get it.

Are you saying that the coaches can evaluate Broyld by watching him everyday in practice better than we as fans can? Crazy talk. I thought I read somewhere where Broyld has had issues holding onto the football, that said so does our starting QB!!

Is it Rene's fault that 3 guys are in his face EVERY time he catches a punt? Will having Desir and Gulley back there change the fact that every time a "return" is set up 3 guys from the opposing team are right in the "returner's" face? Maybe they can stare down the opponent better?

This just is not true at all. At the very least, it wasn't true on Saturday.

Rene simply doesn't have the speed and athleticism to return punts at the BCS level. He has trouble juking tacklers, and it's very obvious he can't outrun anyone to turn the corner. He tried many times on Saturday, and he just couldn't do it, bless his heart.

No idea if Desir is any better, but it's obvious that Rene cannot get it done.

Our small guys aren't as fast as they need to be.

We've gotten better in lots of ways with guys looking the part but we need more speed out of our smallest players.

What's weird to me is that they evaluated him as a guy who could play, created a bunch of plays for him, and now suddenly have evaluated him as a guy who can't play. Meanwhile, our offense doesn't score many points lately.

Agree on the QB, he's more of a turnover machine each week, fumbles or picks. Pitt had at least 1, if not 2 INTs they dropped as well. A 4th year player who has been here as long as our head coach is still standing next to said coach on the sideline. For anyone that thinks it's his job to lose next year, the current state of affairs isn't supporting it. Turnovers are killing us and he's still holding the clipboard.

Does anyone actually think these changes will change anything? Anyone?

Meh, this was true in August, but we've some occasional bouts of decent protection this season (notably on Saturday). Rene dances way too much on punt returns (he had space on the near side before he fumbled, then inexplicably reversed field and ran into a group of red shirts).

He was OK on kickoffs, though, save for those bizarre attempts to catch balls out of bounds.

Mo Jackson and Jamel Riddle they ain't.

Honestly, it changes nothing. It's a band-aid (and not even a good one at that) for a systemic problem on kick returns. I like Marrone but I'm not falling for this one. It only shows Marrone is searching for something, anything, on special teams and he doesn't have the answer yet.
just do not fumble and take it at the 20.take the ball if you win the toss to jump start the offense.light two candles at st.pats and pray for the best

I think Gulley as a guy splitting time in a regular rotation at RB is over. It's a bunch of things, Smith doing well on first and second down, Gulley with a couple of bad plays last week.

Look for him to be a 3rd down specialist or if they go with two back sets.

Desir is actually better than Rene on runt returns, although not by much, (he has 20 yards in 5 returns with a long of 10 yards while Rene has one net yard in 8 returns, with along of 5 yards- and he's been the guy in 5 of 6 games. Desir was back there for only one game. Rene actually looked good returning kickoffs vs. Rutgers. He has 8 for 171 yards on the year while Kobena has 9 for 171 yards. But two different plays where he tires to catch a kick-off that is going out of bounds is "fool me twice- shame on me".

Go, Is that speculation or based on something you heard?

A more recent update suggests that Kobena will be taking kickoffs. http://www.syracuse.com/orangefootb...ers_for_friday_will.html#incart_river_default

The headline and the first two paragraphs are complete non sequiturs (headline: Desir and Kobena to return kicks; first paragraph: Desir to return punts; second paragraph: "but" Kobena may be returning kicks).

Pardon me if I have no idea who the two kickoff returners will be; the article does nothing to clarify the headline.

One wonders if Nolan's editor wants him to be deliberately inarticulate so they can publish hourly updates/clarifications and bump up their page views.

We only use 1 kickoff returner. Morgan has been back there as the other deep guy, but seemingly his job is to direct the returner into the wedge or keep him in the endzone. The second deep guy this year has yet to field a kickoff.

Oh, so I shouldn't post my opinion because I'm not a coach? Are you a coach? Is everyone on this forum a coach? If they are, I'll get off. And I'm not wrong about this.

But if you want a suggestion, here's one: hire a special teams coach.

I've often wondered about who, if anyone here, was or is a player or coach at any level. We all know what they say about opinions but the intelligensia on here is sometimes absurd and the reactions are downright rude, and that is the kindest thing I can say. As for me, I played the game at all levels, except professionally, and coached it at the high school level. This was all many years ago, but there are some things that you learn from these experiences that someone in a couch will never understand. At leastOrijinal is honest enough to admit his limited understanding.

As to the return replacements, I have advocated this on several posts and mentioned that in my opinion, the best KO return man of the past several years was PTG as a freshman, and did not understand why he was passed over by inferior talent. I'm glad to see Marrone has finally relented on this.

Oh. Well, that's not totally true. Coached a high school flag football team for two years :)

Played Freshman, JV and Varsity High school ball with the Liverpool Warriors.

Right. So we assume that Morgan stays back there? And Desir isn't - as the headline states - returning kicks?

Kobena danced a bit much in the first two games, but he did have a long return against Tulane last season. And he's fast. No complaints with this move.
