Spring Football Notes...

A couple of things from the spring depth chart.

Terrel Hunt is up to 233 pounds! TJ Batten is now listed at 227 lbs.

Thompson is listed at 250 lbs compared to 268lbs last year. If accurate, I wonder if this was strategic to increase his mobility?

Provo is listed at 6'3" this spring compared to 6'0" last year.

Interesting that Marcus Coleman is up to 286 lbs as well. Deon Goggins played DT at 275. Coleman might be able to get some PT if he is at that weight and quick.

OrangeXtreme, thanks for posting the full interviews. Just had a chance to watch them and my admiration for this staff and excitement for what they are building and where they are taking this program only grows.

I must say it's odd that George McDonald, for having the reputation of such a supremely personable guy (I mean, we refer to him as the cool kid for cryin' out loud!), is so awkward in front of the camera. It hurts to watch...

Hurts to watch? I don't get that feeling at all. He looks confident and makes perfect sense in everything he says. He comes across much better than I expected. We have head coaches at SU that don't do nearly as well, and I'm definitely not referring to HCSS. HCSS is off the charts good!

Coleman is actually my pick to surprise this spring. I was waiting for him to add some weight. He did and I think he is going to make a strong push in that DT rotation

Have you seen him play at all? Strengths/weaknesses?

Sorry to be so vague as to be misleading. I did not mean to direct anything resembling criticism at McDonald. On the whole I think he's done a great job, and I agree with you in terms of the content of what he has to say, there's no doubt (in my mind) he knows his sh*#. What I see is that he doesn't enjoy the interaction with the media, the sort of fakeness that speaking into that lens, while Joe Q this-is-a-fake-personality shoves a microphone into his face, entails. What I was trying to convey is that I sense a discomfort with a situation that punishes people who are real and I sympathize with him, that's what I meant by hurt to watch, not that it was a negative impression of him.

I think he does not care for the local media. Seemed perturbed.

There's a skill to working the media. He shouldn't be throwing questions back into their faces (e.g. "What do you mean by opening it up?"). He should just take the questions and run with them, answering them to his advantage. A little coaching on this and he won't sound so defensive.

I got the feeling watching the interview that he might be a little sensitive because of some of the criticism he received last year. A thicker skin might be his best strategy.

If you've seen some of the Twitter interactions he's had, he comes off as thinned-skinned frequently.

He has said that he reads everything and uses it as motivation, so your feeling it spot on

you got that right.

I get the feeling that he is careful of what he says so it doesnt get scrutinized. I think he asked that question so he will know how to give a answer to it instead of not knowing and talking out of his azz. Ive had conversations with him and he is easy to talk to. He is a intelligent guy but he doesn't act like a know it all. I appreciate that.

NO. Just that I heard he really works hard and is a good kid. Plus I dont think Sloan is the hardest working kid. So I have a feeling Coleman will earn some playing time.

Agreed on all accounts. I can understand some thinking his interview came across different, but, I think he was trying to find out exactly what axe was referring to before answering.

I'm not into scrutinizing interviews to read body language and reading in between the lines. Not to say its a bad thing to do so, but, you can drive yourself crazy.

At the end of the day these guys are football coaches and tireless workers. They all go out of there way to help local coaches however they can. They're very responsive, almost anybody can reach out and get in touch with them in the off-season. I'd have to imagine a lot of college staffs are not that accessible, but, I don't know that answer for sure.

Everybody communicates differently and everyone reacts differently to how they interpret that communication. Everybody is human.
