Spring Game Back In The Dome

Will our fanbase ever care about the spring game?

I feel like short of coming off a final four playoff season with just about every player returning there will never be any buzz for this game or big attendance. Perhaps if we had a brand new stadium that might be a factor. Maybe if we had the consensus #1 qb recruit who graduated from high school early coming in to play that would move the needle and buzz for the event. I am not even sure if that would matter much.

I could be completely off base and maybe Fran/SU leadership has a different vision but the spring game is a non-event every year. It also seems like it has always been that way. Even when I was a student in the late 1990s when we had big east championship teams and some hype around the team. No one cared at all about the spring game. I can't speak for any other era as I was not in Syracuse in the 1950s or the 1980s when we had nationally relevant teams. Did anyone go then?

Is it really worth investing time and energy into it? DOME or the game could be played on the quad. I doubt anyone would really notice.

I am just one person but I enjoy going up for the spring game. My son and I catch up on stuff in general, you can see for example new QBs getting some reps, grab a soda and pretzel. If they wanted to collect some Nil dollars they probably could. I like going cuz it's casual.

Although the crowd size has ebbed and flowed, I agree it will NEVER be what others seem to have.

That said, if done right it could be fantastic. I personally prefer the outreach to the community style that we have had in the past. Signing sessions, pictures, etc, where people (especially kids, ie future fans) can rub elbows with players and coaches. I grew up with that, and always loved interacting with them.

No matter what so many on this board seem to think, you don’t get ANY insight or excitement on the actual football end of things. They need to have those other aspects to make the event as good as it can be.

That said, I’d be bent if it didn’t take place.

I bet attendance is stronger this year than typical based on the momentum from last year and QB competition.

Still will never be what others have been, but it can be a cool event.

I remember during the G Rob years, Gomez and Dave were pulling fans out of the stands to field punts. It was some of the funniest stuff I ever saw at a Spring game.

If I read this correctly, the tailgate will be going on during the game !!??

Depends on what you mean by care. Will we sell out the Dome? No. It’s rare that we do that for an actual football game. Will we get 10,000 to attend? Possibly. It depends on if there’s any buzz surrounding the game and if there are any other activities going on. Make it more of a fan fest with alumni players and stuff on the quad and a chance to meet the current players and I think they can pull that off. Otherwise, it will remain at a few thousand diehards at best.

There having the Tailgate on the quad event. Hopefully we get decent weather. April is always a crapshoot.

I would agree. It needs to have more things like that to be an event, besides just a game.

Our fanbase is amazing after so many years of not having a reason to be. But the fanbases that get huge crowds just to watch a practice game are in SEC and Big 10 areas where football is a huge part of the culture that I'm not sure we'll ever see in New York (Not necessarily a bad thing in some ways)

Back in the early/mid 70s, Easter day got up to 95F and it turned out to be the hottest day of the year.
