Spring Practice Day #12: Sat. April 7, 2018

I guess I'm amazed by how little conversation there is this Spring surrounding the team...

Is interest down?
Is it because of limited coverage?
I'm willing to bet the Spring showcase will suffer.

I have a million questions, but I feel like we get very little access. I mean there's been an article or two a week on different position groups, but, that's it really.

I feel the same way. There are tight restrictions in place. To learn about a kid, he has had to have started previously. Assistants are off limits. Without JW's work we are pretty much in the dark and tbat isnt good for buzz .

Last year Orange Club members were invited to a closed scrimmage a week before the Spring game. No such invitation this year. I think if Dino had his way there would be NO fan or media involvement except on game days. Not exactly the way to build excitement while the program is trying to sell tickets.

Agree 100%. He doesn't even care about the big $$$$ tix holders. Will he be part of the on the field meet and great? The Assistants? I would bet just the players.

The thing that gets me is that the few times I have met Coach at events, he has been very personable and engaging. Really seems to enjoy the interaction. He told us that the WakeyLeaks scandal has coaches more paranoid than ever but there has to be a balance between accessibility to engage a fan base and blackout lockdown to protect "trade secrets."

I won't get excited until I see the team play a game. Every year we hear about how good the team is going to be and then -- for once reason or another -- they fall flat on their faces. I guess I can be labeled as a "Doubting Thomas" now. :(

I suspect there would be more access if rahme and Webb were on the beat.

Gotcha. Since it's been a few years since they were, and I don't think either work for the paper anymore, I didn't know that was still something people were holding on to.

I think it is Tyler Gilfus.
Definitely a receiver with a small stature. Pretty sure it is Riley. Looks like him and does look like it could be #10 jersey. Plus he did score two TD's.

I keep hoping some other receiver other than a 150 lb kid grabs a hold of a starting spot. Nothing against him personaly but with that height and weight he has to have a lower ceiling than some. But with two scores it doesn't seem like he is going to make it easy for a young'n to step in.

That's just not true. That said, I think it's pretty clear that the fan base is down to the diehards from the $99 season ticket holders to the "Big boosters" you speak of. Not sure who those actually are anymore. Regardless of what media, PR, events etc are held by the coach or coaches, there are two things that will draw interest and raise attendance, #1 is obviously winning and #2 is a renovation to the dome. Wins are probably the easier of the two at this point. We have been doing this dog and pony show for 15 years, coaches need to be more accessible, etc etc. Just get some wins. Most people really like Dino, he just needs to win games and continue to rebuild the program that was left in shambles once again.

Sean Riley is going to lead team in TD catches
Awww man that dropped pass in the lsu game broke my heart but size aside I really think riley will be a weapon by the time his senior season comes around... ik his size isnt ideal but the right plays drawn up with good fundamentals and that speed can make somewhat up for the criticism.

I suspect you would be incorrect. This staff isn't into sharing and Babers controls the message. Family, Ohana, La Famiglia.
Possibly, but wasn’t access a bit looser last year?

A renovation to the dome does not drive my fandom. I can handle anything except rain and snow for 3 to 4 hours for a game 5 to 7 times per year

Winning is everything.

There's also 3 news stations, a student paper, a smattering of blogs, and the sports talk station (that's owned by the holder of the broadcast rights) not getting any access either.

Fair enough. Do you see it decreasing over time or has it been that way since Dino arrived?
