Starling > Mintz

And to bring it back to the thread title ... (Starling > Mintz). Last season Mintz was 34th in BPR in the ACC out 147 players with a minimum of 500 possessions played. JJ ranked ... 124th.

It's almost like if people look at the whole set of statistics relative to other players ... it provides objective comparisons.

There’s a reason for it. His defensive metrics still aren’t good. This year he has more company in that department though.

Would you mind sharing a link with me, so I can take a look at what you're talking about? Thank you.

I dont know what you’re watching if you think Red’s “offense” is failing even partially because it over emphasizes JJ.

And let's remember, the offense wasn't any better in the 7 games or so that Starling was out.

We have the 17th worst offense in high major college basketball ... and that's the best part of the team.

You think JJ should take 100% of the FGAs because he's "a scorer?" Or should we have a better offense and better offensive players?

This isn't rocket science. Our offense stinks and our defense stinks. Year in and year out, SU focuses the offense on an inefficient player like JJ taking as many FG attempts as he wants to because "he's a scorer" is the problem. Cooper Flagg is scoring 19 ppg but is JJ the same or better player because he scores 19.8 ppg? That's context - not how many passing attempts the arguably best QB in SU history
Any more strawman you want to build lol

Or make smart decisions after penetration.
And the highest scoring half of the year 55 points and Judah didn't score, sat for 10 minutes with 2 fouls. Had a 20 point lead and Judah plays the entire second half gets 17 of our 32 , and we have to scratch for a win.
Judah had talent but always was about Judah and not team.

So many of his penetrations where he could not finish due to lack of strength or the defense sagging should have been kick outs to shooters but he was only concerned with making the shot at the rim or getting to the foul line. You could make a 10 minutes or more compilation of the many times he missed a shot going to the rim, ended up on his ass and sat there complaining about a foul not being called while everyone else is heading back to the other side of the court. Hopefully, he's improved and has become more of a team player in the G League.

ppg is an irrelevant stat without context. This has been discussed throughout the thread. Also, what does ACC all-rookie team matter today? That team went 11-21 and the coach was forced to retire midway through the season. We've had a season and half to watch him play. Use this season.

You can use several different metrics for complete comparison of players across the conferences or D1.

For example, here's Evan Miya's advanced analyticals, BPR. There are 117 players in the ACC who have had played at least 450 possessions. JJ is ranked 57th. 57/117 = 48.7%, so he's been more productive than 51.3% of the players who have played as many possessions has he has. Slightly better than average.

34% is the ACC conference average. If you look at that, that number is made up of a lot of role players chucking threes. If you limit it to the guys playing and shooting, say more than 20 attempts, the average is 34.6% and if you limit to the guys shooting in volume, JJ Has taken 45 threes, so let's use that as our minimum, the average is 34.3%.
So the answer is 34%. As of today, JJ is shooting 27%. Last season he shot 32.4%. JJ is below average shooting the three.
So slightly better than average is still better than not CLOSE to average. Am I correct in this statement? This is what I was responding to and not anything else. I am thankful that you have Google and support my position. The All ACC rookie statement was again in response to the statement that JJ wasn't CLOSE to average his first 2 years. Again you are correct that it doesn't matter today but remember the context of my reply.

I’m thrilled JJ is on our team and hope he comes back next year. We need his continued growth and leadership. He seems to be a great role model and has improved each year. In a terrible season (so far) he is a bright spot.
Yeah I like JJ. I hope he stays another year, I just hope he’s not relied on to be the go-to star next year.

Ok...lets bring the debate back because I feel like we're going to far from the sun here.

This is my view:
A) JJ is the best player on this team and the team is better when he is playing

B) JJ being the best player on the team is not an overall positive because he's not an elite player

C) I can come to that conclusion based on the fact we're 8-6 with him this year and our best win is over Georgia Tech.

If we turn it around and end the year on the bubble or something, I'll gladly admit I was wrong.

JJ should get props for what he's doing, no doubt, but we speaking about the reality of the situation isn't being negative despite what you think.
Agreed, but we are actually 6-3 in games where JJ is playing this year.

People are actually saying we are more critical of JJ than we were with Mintz...lol...lmao

JM was our best player last season he won a ton of games for us. JJ is our best player this year. Different players different teams. I hope that JJ sticks next year as we are going to need some senior leadership, and the kid is an excellent player.

He should stay if offered an attractive NIL. Like Bacot and Hunter Dickinson, he is a very solid college player without a guaranteed shot in the NBA. His NIL worth next year should be able to get him a nice home in a good neighborhood in the Syracuse area.
