State-funded Syracuse stadium would cost $495m, plus land and parking lots

Here's the excerpt:

Syracuse University has provided more details about its proposed new state-subsidized football stadium, which are:
  • Cost would be $495 million plus parking structures and land acquisition, the cost of which aren’t outlined.
  • The stadium would seat 44,000 (down from the Carrier Dome’s 49,000), with a retractable roof so it could host basketball and other indoor events while also events that need to be outdoors, like, um, professional snowball fights?
  • “Additional development of a 250-room hotel, over 160 apartments and 150,000 feet of retail space.” No word on how that would be paid for, or whether there would be penalties if it didn’t happen; the university said it would require “additional discussions.”
  • “The facility’s operating budget would pay for the extra police, fire and other public services needed.”
  • Whether the site would pay property taxes is undecided, but in any case the university wouldn’t pay any, since it would just be a tenant.
That’s clear as mud, but at least it’s something. Also noteworthy: The SU consultant who wrote the letter demanding public funds is Irwin Raij, the same guy who New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo hired two years ago to be his state stadium negotiations czar. It’s always more profitable when you can work both sides of the street.

That last paragraph is interesting.

They should put a Wegman's there. Or use that retail space as a destination for younger people with bars/outdoor cafes and restaurants for summer/maybe a music venue, etc. Make like an Americanized Italian Piazza with all the options surrounding a centralized icon (statue of JB maybe??). Either way, that space has to be used for something that attracts visitors outside of events, but would also be very popular during/before/after events.

I think one of the the biggest concerns would be the stadium being off-campus. How easy will it be for students to get there? I loved being able to walk from my dorm/apartment to games at the Dome and could see how many students would simply choose not to go to games off-campus.

People need to get over this on/off campus thing.

The Rent is 21 miles from UConn. USF is 12.5 from Raymond James, Pitt is 5 miles from Heinz Field, Miami is 10.5 from the Orange Bowl.

SU is 3.5 from the Inner Harbor, 1.2 to the Kennedy Square Site.

People need to realize, there won't be any form of public financing for a new facility on Campus.

I'm still of the "save the carrier dome" mindset.

But if this happens, I'd love a few additional considerations.

1- Go to 50K seats. I understand the romanticism of 44K...but 50 means something

2- I'd really like a BIGGER hotel. 250 rooms is fine, but I would love to see them go to 350 or 400. Theoretically...this is the going to be the FIRST choice for many people traveling to the games from our of town. It would be nice if you could realistically house 1,000 people or so for events right there.

3- This is a wish list item that is probably unrealistic given the area we are talking on...but...would love to figure out a way to get more , bigger parking lots right at the facility. It would be nice for ANYONE who is willing to pay the premium cost to be able to fit in the "good" lots.

That said, #SaveTheCarrierDome

I haven't been back to campus in 15 years. Is it needed? As for being off campus if it is downtown then it is a long walk away but I am sure there will be shuttle buses... i'll miss the dome but having a whole area devoted to the team downtown could bring in some great revenue for the city.

That was a concern for Ford Field when the Lions moved downtown from the Slverdome, which was surrounded by a sea of parking lots. Particularly when the Tigers would also be home, and shows in the theater district around the stadium.

I think it's turned out just fine for tailgating, bars, and the like.

Those distances are problems for each of the schools you mentioned.

Those distances are problems for other reasons:

UConn - Bad Football, USF - Bad Football/Huge Bandwagon Town, Pitt - Pro Stadium/Town and Miami - Pro Stadium/Town

Attendance in Syracuse is driven more by non-alumni locals and I don't think being off campus would be that big of a deal. (As long as parking and tailgating are addressed) Not all off campus stadiums have attendance problems. Here is a list of all the schools that play off campus, with their distance: http://www.footballgeography.com/list-of-fbs-stadiums-sorted-by-distance-to-the-campus/

Schools of note off of that list:
UCLA - 17 miles - 68,481 (2012 Average)
USF - 8 miles - 44,130 (2012 Average) - Looks worse with it being a Pro Stadium
NC State - 3 miles - 54,106 (2012 Average)
Pittsburgh - 3 miles - 41,494 (2012 Average) - Looks worse with it being a Pro Stadium
Baylor - 2 miles - 41,194 (2012 Average)
South Carolina - 2 miles - 80,001 (2012 Average)

Put bars and fun hangouts that will attract young people and professionals around it.

Could they conceivably do something like they did at Camden Yards (maybe a mini version)...

Block off a stretch of street right outside the stadium...put high end bars there, restaurants...make it a destination of itself?

Of course they should. They also should have put the baseball stadium in the city, like every other minor league team did. The powers that be, in Syracuse, always do the wrong thing.

I guess you missed the point, as it the distance, even to the inner harbor site, is much closer than any of those others, as in it shouldn't be a big deal at all.

That's basically what the original plans called for. The stadium on one block and the next 2 are to be a mixed-use development area with parking, office space, hotel(s) and retail/restaurants/bars at street level. The whole object of the public investment was to develop a new neighborhood around the arena that could also provide new tax revenues. How effective that is, is up for debate.

Michigan Stadium, while on-campus is 1.1 miles from the Diag (the quad).

i tell ya, i cant stop laughing at the term being thrown around here as 1 of the sites of the new stadium...'Inner Harbor'.

am i missing something?? did Syracuse suddenly locate next to the Atlantic??

with the hoop teams success with canadian recruits, did we get a parcel of land on Lake Ontario??

im going to flood my backyard and call the raised area where my grill is and where i can put the portable bar...the Inner Harbor.

yep, folks ive already got a 5 star restaurant and an excellent pub where every night is ladies night and the happy hour never ends. come on down and bring your wallets.

cant imagine that scenario being too far from the truth.

inner harbor and Syracuse in the same sentence just cracks me up.

You said what I've been thinking. It seemed strange for us to build a stadium in Baltimore.

That has to be a new term. Like in the last couple years new. In my first 23 years of life, which were spent in or around Syracuse, I had never heard it. Outside of Lake Ontario, the only other body of water I knew about was Onondaga Lake, and we were told not to go near it because it was glowing.

The distance down Crouse Ave. from Marshall Street to E. Washington Street is 6 blocks. The walking distance is about 1/2 mile.

Give me a Taco Mac. Would help the southern kids feel at home as well.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inner_Harbor,_Syracuse

wiki site but has a pretty accurate history of the inner harbor, although somewhat outdated.

"The Inner Harbor is a former industrial quarter of Syracuse. It is a reclaimed port connected to the Erie Canal system. Restored and upgraded, the harbor hosts an array of events -- concerts, festivals, fireworks, to name a few -- and currently is planning to get another major facelift. The New York State Canal Corporation is in the process of selecting a developer to build a mix of housing, commerce, and entertainment around the harbor, in step with the "Sidewalk Community" nickname it was designated."

Nope, not on the Atlantic but it was critical to industry in the city during the hey day of the Erie Canal.

I'd always prefer it be on campus, but if even SU is trying to move away from that, then there's not much we can do about it. That said, the Kennedy Square location is close enough. People could still go to Marshall Street and get there on gameday without too much hassle.

I felt like I walked a few country miles at both Auburn and Tennessee to get to their stadiums. Tennessee was probably more like this would be, because you're walking through a city atmosphere. Auburn's walk resembled some of those animal migrations you see on Animal Planet. We stomped out all the grass, so let's walk 5 miles to the football field where we can find more grass.

Not on the Atlantic, but you can definitely find your way by boat there from here.

Those are awful comparisons, because when you think of traditional schools with great fan bases, those stadiums are on-campus.

It's 10 blocks from Lawrinson. Much farther from some of the frat houses on Comstock, or the apartments on Euclid.

Nobody's going to walk that after a BB game in the middle of winter.

They'd have to provide shuttle transportation for students from a few pick-up points around campus.

Eh, whatever. I used to live on the corner of Euclid and Sumner when I was a student and walked to Manley in the middle of the winter and never missed a game. And it was colder and we got more snow in those days. (well maybe that's an exaggeration). But to your point, some sort of shuttle would be a part of the plan most likely.
