State-funded Syracuse stadium would cost $495m, plus land and parking lots

We don't need a new stadium yet, big waste of money in my opinion, If they can put up a retractable roof facility without significant taxpayer costs then Ok, but I love the dome and it is still a unique and awesome place to watch football.

A retractable roof on new construction costs are not much of a factor...the existing Dome is another story.

If you are going to spend that kind of money, silly to cheap out over that. For this community a right sized facility that is true multi-use and configurable provides the most bang for the buck. One part of configurable is the roof.

About 15 years give or take. As a fan I love the dome I love how compact it is, I love the fact that even though im in the upper deck I feel like im on top of the action, Most of the complaints about the dome just don't hold water, Ive been to brand new stadiums with longer concession lines, long walks to the stadium, scattered tailgating ect... I hope when they build the new one whenever it is that they are able to keep some of these same attributes to the new place.

i say build it.

build it with the specs we keep seeing. that small 44kish or so. make it loud, make it so the fans are right on top of everyone.

build it so small its intimidating to opposing teams. beat a big name nonleague opponent or 2.

and voila, i get 1 of nd, michigan, ohio st, tennessee, texas etc...1x a year at Giants Stadium as nobody will ever want to play there.

sounds good to me.

This is Red Bull Arena where the NY Red bulls play, it seats 25,000 but is really similar in size to the dome ( All individual seats and most of one side of the stadium are luxery/press boxes. Great site lines in this stadium ( I have been there about 25 times ) Would be awesome for football (Just add retractable top to the 360 degree partial roof.

fwiw: ive never been, but a lot of people and media types say that RedBullArena is the nicest Stadium in NYC area.

the list includes:

Giants, Yankee, citi, ashe, where the SI Yankees and Cyclones play and yes...rutgers.

its certainly in a woebegone area, but i guess the sigtlines and seating are pretty nice.

The most recently completed similar project was in France.

The Grand Stade Lille Métropole (GSLM) stadium is the first of its kind. The facility, which has a capacity in excess of 50,000, incorporates a sliding roof that can be closed in just 30 minutes. The other remarkable feature is a built-in arena, with the northern half of the pitch designed to lift up and slide over the southern half to reveal a "Showcase" venue for concerts and indoor sporting competitions, complete with terraced seating located below pitch level, providing a total capacity of 29,500 seats. This "nested" design, which is the only one of its kind in Europe, represents an exceptional architectural achievement.

Built for $442M and completed in 2012.

Is the thought that the Dome will come crashing down in a hail of concrete and teflon sometime in the next decade?

With a new, non-inflatable roof, and proper maintenance of the facility, I would think the Dome could last decades.

I'm not against building new, it may make the most financial sense. But let's not pretend that we'd build new because the Dome *needs* to be replaced. This is a *want* situation all around.

I agree with this sentiment and I lean towards keeping the Dome and making improvements. The Dome is clearly unique as others have said, a new building with more bells and whistles isn't the status quo when it comes to other venues in the ACC.

Look at this European design. The retractable floor for basketball is pretty slick, it’s at the 1:45 mark.

LOSC Lille Stadium

I've always thought this would be the way to go, for either a Dome renovation (pricey, with the existing structure in place) or a new stadium (still rather pricey at Kennedy Square, with a high water table).

What are your referring to being the way to go? The retractable floor part or something else about that stadium?

Oh, yeah, that wasn't clear. The retractable floor.

Great use of space and an excellent way to get huge basketball crowds while getting everyone closer to the court.

no... I just wanted a seat under the cheerleaders ;)

wasn't serious at all

Can someone pin the discussed location on a Google map and link it? I don't know that area well and have some trouble finding "Kennedy Square".

A map, including directions from the current Carrier Dome box office to the edge of the new stadium site. It is less than a mile from the current Carrier Dome. Given enough parking and space for other attractions, it could be a great site. It is fairly cheap too, you can buy a decent sized building for ridiculously low prices, and the area is currently unsafe enough that you wouldn't want your business there. Urban renewal is all part of the reasoning for the location.

I envision something like Fenway Park and Landsdowne St. Those businesses get a tremendous amount of business when there is a game or other event, but are perfectly viable when the Sox aren't in town or in the offseason. Of course, with Football, Basketball, Lacrosse and other events, there hopefully wouldn't be too many periods with no events at all.

For me, the best place for the Dome replacement would be the Drumlins site, but my focus is on tailgating and getting in and out easily.

The best place for the region overall is somewhere between the main campus and downtown. If it ends up there, I think it is really important to reserve a large area for parking. If it is close to SUNY Upstate, the parking is desperately needed anyway for their employees, as well as other people who work in the general area, mostly people in all the medical support buildings that have sprouted up down the hill north of the hospital.

That open space would be an ideal place for hosting the farmer's market and all the other festivals that are staged downtown. There really isn't a great place to host festivals downtown right now; this is a big reason why the Jazz Festival left. If done properly, a sports arena in this area could provide a link between downtown and the medical/university areas and unite them with the Armory Square, Franklin Square, Solar Street, the Syracuse Harbor area/DestinyUSA to make the entire inner city a thriving, exciting place to be.

No reason there couldn't be bars, restaurants, hotels, nightclubs and the like surrounding a sports arena in that area, no reason it couldn't drive a major turnaround of a trouble neighborhood just as the Verizon Center did to Chinatown in DC and the football and baseball stadia in Baltimore did to the Inner Harbor there.

Once we do all of this, we can start planning on hosting our first Final Four.

Eh, whatever. I used to live on the corner of Euclid and Sumner when I was a student and walked to Manley in the middle of the winter and never missed a game. And it was colder and we got more snow in those days. (well maybe that's an exaggeration). But to your point, some sort of shuttle would be a part of the plan most likely.

Yeah, I remember that...You left out the part about being barefoot because shoes were prohibitively expensive back in those days...and how the logistics of the walk made it uphill both ways;)

If the design of the new stadium is based on the one in France , a great thing to make part of it would be to face that large high def screen towards the bar and restaurant district and make a large tiered park in front of it. On big game days you could have another 5-10 thousand people watching out there, and really be part of the game almost as much as being in side. The whole downtown would be part of the cheering crowd. especially when the roof is open.
