as per Stat Sheet. http://statsheet.com/mcb/referees/karl-hess/schedule?season=2009

Hess has reffed 23 Cuse games over the last five seasons. Fourteen of them have been at the Dome, three on the road and six neutral sites. Draw your own conclusions with this trip down memory lane.

2013-14
Home loss to BC
Home win vs Duke
Home win vs Nova
Home win vs Indiana
Road win at St Johns

2012-13
Home loss to Georgetown
Home win vs Notre Dame
Home win vs Providence

2011-12
Home win vs WVU
Home win vs NCSU
Home win vs Florida
Road win vs Nova
Neutral win vs KState @ Pittsburgh
Neutral loss to Cincy @ BET

2010-11
Home win vs DePaul
Home loss vs Georgetown
Road loss to Pitt
Neutral loss to Marquette @ Cleveland
Neutral win vs Indiana State @ Cleveland

2009-2010
Home win vs Georgetown
Home loss vs Pitt
Neutral win vs Gonzaga @ Buffalo
Neutral win vs Vermont @ Buffalo

What stands out to me is that in the 2010 and 2011 NCAA tournaments, he reffed SU's first- and second-round games.

Can't say I see really anything.
I know. The only thing I found and you can make it as big an issue as you would like to is that in these past five years, our record in Hess games is 70% winning % and in games that Hess doesn't ref we are 87%. Of course Hess refs more of the "big" games so it's probably about right.

Is he the actual ref that blew the over and back against Marquette? He was on the crew, but did he make the call?

So what your saying is the only game he didn't try to screw the SU team over for was the home loss to Georgetown last year when SU embarrassed themselves?

If he's not we can always say he is at least guilty by association. Like the Three Musketeers-all for one and one for all. Or is it the Three Blind Mice?

I still can't get over one week we get called for the charge at Duke and then the next week in almost the exact same play we get called for a blocking foul. Both times I thought the call was the other way. You would think the referees would have some rule about what is a charge and what is block. Whatever it is, it seems like the referee just makes it depending on who is the home team.

I can't see anything meaningful in this data. What would really be interested is Free-Throws-Attempt comparing home team with away team. Or by referees versus specific teams. It's not the bad foul call that makes you lose the game. It's the non-calls on one end and touch fouls on the other end!

Most games where I think the refs are giving it to the other team is during 10 minutes and 5 minutes left in the game. On one end there's a bunch of non-calls. On the other end there's a bunch of touch fouls. Sometimes I think these refs and their relatives have money on the outcome!

Happens fast, not reviewable and a judgment call on the part of the ref for the most part. That said, I agree with you, both calls went against us and I thought they both should have gone in our favor.

If you go onto that statsheet website they have a lot of that type of data. You need to be a real geek or someone with a lot of time to do so. For instance in this link, you will see that Hess has one of the smallest home vs visitor foul calls. http://statsheet.com/mcb/referees/stats?id=most_games&min=10&season=2013&submit=Go His variance is -.6 which is almost a 50/50 split. Compare that to Tony Greene who's home vs visitor is -3.3 which is a big favor to the home team (which we learned first hand). http://statsheet.com/mcb/referees/stats?id=largest_home_margin&min=10&season=2013&submit=Go

In fact if you look at Tony Greene's history this season he has called more home fouls, by far, than any other season in his career. And when I say by far, it really jumps out.

It will be interesting to see if we get Greene again this year.
We will probably get him in the ACC semis against Duke (assuming we and Duke are both in that game).

That would be my guess. Give him an opportunity to "get it right". Lol.

That's because if Tony Greene makes the wrong call at Cameron he would be hanging from the rafters with the other retired jerseys!
