A defender landed on his leg in the first half and had him gimpy, but he was able to come back after 1 play. That's the knee brace.

I doubt it. The knee would have been completely unrelated. The tendon went on non-contact, it must have been just ready to go, unfortunately.

My differential diagnoses from afar

Best case scenario: partial tear of one of the heads of gastrocnemius (calf muscle)

Worst case scenario: ruptured achilles

Doesn't the toe usually hang down limp on an Achilles tear? It didn't look like it was, which is my only hope it's less severe - because otherwise I thought for sure it was an Achilles.

Tore my achilles in April playing soccer. Similar scenario, non contact, not even an athletic move, a simple cut. Absolutely no pain, just felt like a direct kick to the back of my calf and a full on pop. Hope Steve heals up fast.

How long was/is your recovery?

Surgery 1 week after injury. Non weight bearing for 6 weeks, then aircast/boot for 6 weeks, then walking with lifts in shoe for 4 weeks. I'm currently walking normally (for the most part). Just able to jog in the last two weeks. Its a slow process. My surgeon told me it would be a full year from injury to feel back to normal.

Yeah, Achille's for pro athletes is minimum 6 months, and could go a year for recovery.

It does. But the ankle and shoe were wrapped with athletic tape for support so likely wouldnt flex without the calf pulling on the foot

Idk when I tore mine, I wouldn’t say my toes hung limp. I walked to the car and walked into the ER unassisted. I just felt unstable.

lol, sure, for potential injuries. Unfortunately, you don't know an Achilles is ready to snap until it does. That's why they happen almost always out of the blue on a planted step.

Two distinct injuries. Friggin kid as tough as nails as he was getting smashed around all day (again).

First injury was a bang up deal and was just that, looked to be a patella compression type deal, no structural damage likely. Leaves you limping a little bit, but you still can play like he did.

Second injury was distinct and different, and just crazy in a young kid without a lot of time on the field especially this young of an age, almost certainly an Achilles tendon tear looked like. Dammit.

I just hope Rickie can settle in and get the ball to our top wideouts and playmakers, because the talent is there on the outside. If he can distribute the ball and trust those guys to make plays in space, this offense takes on a whole new level of danger. At the same time, we’ve got to lean into our identity and run the football with authority. Pound it, wear defenses down, and let the ground game open everything else up. When we’re running the out of the football, everything starts to click—play-action, deep shots, and even tempo control.
The best part is, I actually trust this defense now. They’ve shown grit, toughness, and the ability to step up when it matters. That’s not something we’ve always been able to say, but with the way they’re playing, it gives the offense room to breathe. If Rickie can manage the game, hit the weapons outside, and the run game keeps rolling, we’ve got the perfect formula: an offense that punishes teams on the ground, takes its shots when they’re there, and a defense that can lock it down and get stops.
That’s how you win games in the ACC. That’s how you start stacking wins, building momentum, and proving that this program isn’t just on the rise—it’s ready to compete week in and week out.
