Still no preseason T25 love

two things for me will be determinative:

1. was JBs "system" and rigidity actually holding this team back recently (as many posters surmised, myself included) in other words, had JB stopped getting the most out of his rosters???

or was last year's performance close to the actual ceiling of that roster?

basically, was a significant cause of the poor performance in recent seasons due to poor coaching?

(my guess is yes)

I'm in agreement. I don't think anyone questions how great of a coach Boeheim was and the amazing job he did at building the program. However, the latter years just didn't seem to reflect the earlier and mid years in terms of his approach to things, such as:

- Adding his sons to the roster added a lot of questions / challenges (I'll leave it at that)
- Recruiting dropped significantly
- Stubbornness increased significantly - seemed like he was spending way too much time defending himself and the program in the last few years
- Roster management went downhill
- 2-3 zone became part of identity

Funny thing to me though is I think last year he really tried mixing it up more with players, giving guys lots of chances (looking at you Chris) and not giving up on players that he may have earlier in his career (Copeland, Taylor, etc.).

I can't wait to find out the answer this season - I sure as hell hope we're right.

Unless I'm missing some games what's so tough about our non-conference slate? Other than Maui I don't see much of a challenge with this roster...
“Besides the hardest preseason tourney field that I’ve ever seen in my life which may feature Top 15-20 opponents in three consecutive days, what’s the big deal?”

;)

But other than that, how did you enjoy the play, Mrs. Lincoln?

Michigan state as usual overrated.

But in particular, for anybody in Cuse Nation to be even mildly butthurt that the Orange aren't considered Top 25, coming off of:
consecutive meh seasons, having lost our HOF coach, 2 'top' players/starters to the portal, and with a brand-new HC taking over the reins, with FIVE new faces coming in...

I agree 144% - it's all pointless until at least the OOC season has played out.
Exactly. Whether some think it's fair or not, we've lost the benefit of the doubt until we get it back again.

Well said. Talented roster, on paper, no doubt. But like you said, new HC replacing a Hall of Famer, two poor seasons in a row, sizable roster makeover, question mark at center and a tough non-conference slate...definitely opportunities for SU to play its way into the polls early on in the season. Being unranked to start the season is logical - let's just do a repeat of 2003 :)
Actually that 2003 team had 3 players who at different times carried them to the win. Melo of course, Gerry his great shooting, and Billy saved us against Oklahoma St, and with Gerry getting hurt 1st half against Kansas ran the show the 2nd half.

Everyone thinks we're going to turn into a .500 team now that the Hall of Fame coach retired.

Wait.

Funny, that's all some hope for on the football side.
I've got high hopes for Red even though initially I wanted someone from outside. Seeing the caliber of players Red targets I'm pretty confident we'll have a better year than the last 2.

ESPN ranked us #11 on preseason ACC ranking. We are about the same as BC, Pittsburgh. The bottom two are Louisville and Notre Dame. The only ACC expansion team standing out is Miami.

He has Cuse at 11th, not 14th, but still…

Scroll to the right. There’s several guys picking. One has us 14th.

If you scroll down to the end of the article, it has all the CBS expert picks and there is one guy who has us 14th and another 13th. Without looking at it again, the best I think was someone picking us 5th. Most have us in the 8 to 11 range.

These guys are high on us.

And just listening to them you can tell how much more they pay attention to college hoops in general vs the CBS guys.

If Hubert Davis had our exact roster in his first year they would all have UNC top 3 in the ACC.

Outside a couple teams there are massive questions for every ACC team this year.

Agree with some of the comments about some of the prognosticators but again we need to play and earn it all over again. Its been that long and I have no problem with it. Let Red and players show they belong in the top of the ACC and top 25. Personally I am excited for the Red and team but I could see it taking them some games to find their rhythm and seeing which groupings and rotations work well together.

even with all of the flux, theres still more continuity and talent on this roster than the majority of NCAABB

I assume, since JB always got the most out of his rosters throughout his career - most outside people would put almost all of the blame on recent poor play to lack of talent and not lack of coaching...while I do think talent wasnt as good as it coudlve been - my opinion is that it was primarily coaching that caused the poor records of recent years.

in the end, I think the outside view of the current talent on the roster is probably way below what it could be with the right system and coaching i.e. the current players took a hit on their perceptions due to the poor system they have played in for the last 1-2 years.

2. how good are the new coaches?

can they actually coach? how will they manage games??

everyone loved hopkins but he has struggled big time as a head coach

IF the new coaches are good at managing games and strategy etc...then the ceiling will be high...if not, it wont.

overall, I can understand the "wait and see" approach in terms of prognositicating this team...but for me...just changing the coach should be an improvement and the transfers are big time talents so I expect a jump just from that, as well. simple replacement level coaching (and absence of a system that was weighing down performance) should mean this team has a much better record than the last few seasons, imo.

on the other hand, if it really was just talent and JB did a great job last season...then, well, it could still be a good year if the new faces are as advertised, anyway...

so I'm bullish.
Fair questions about the new coaches, but can there really be any doubt about JB holding us back the last five years or so between mediocre recruiting and an outmoded style ????
