I saw in another thread posters sharing who they thought was the best SU player at each position. I am proposing another exercise in pointless internet banter, put together your best SU 12 player team. I am not asking for a top 12, because I don't think the best players always make the best team. So who is on your best team? And why?

I am still putting mine together and will post it with my reasoning once I have "finalized" it.

Dave Bing, Sherm Douglas, Pearl Washington, GMac, Derrick Coleman, Billy Owens, Roosevelt Bouie, Carmelo Anthony, Lawrence Moten, Rony Seikaly, Wes Johnson, Mike Hopkins (for his hustle and enthusiasm off the bench)

Not necessarily the 12 best players... but a "team" that has a bit of everything (scoring, rebounding, point guard leadership and intangibles)

Edit: Sorry I didn't list them by position as did everyone who followed me here, but I represented all the positions at least two deep.

I'm starting at 2000 because I wasn't around or old enough to remember some of the best players from the 80s/early 90s

Starting:
MCW
Dion
Carmelo
Wes
Christmas

Bench:
PG: Flynn
SG: Rautins
SF: Fair, Warrick, Joseph
C: Jackson, AO

The fact I couldn't find a spot even for Gmac.. we've had some pretty good players even since 2003!

Might not be the "best", but I constructed my roster based off what I think would be the best overall roster.

PG: MCW
SG: Devendorf
SF: Wes
PF: Melo
C: Fab Melo

G: Flynn
G: Dion
: Etan Thomas
: Rak

Rolling 9 deep with my squad, giving the rest of the schollys to Andrew Kouwe, Justin Thomas, and Donovan McNabb.

PG: Sherm, Pearl
SG: Bing, Moten
SF: Owens, Carmelo
PF: Coleman, Orr
C: Seikaly, Bouie

Final two: John Wallace, Andy Rautins (that's the shocking one here, I'm sure...but he's the best shooter on this team, and can play either guard spot)

MY BESTS TEAM
  • PG: Douglas
  • SG: Moten
  • SF: Melo
  • PF: Coleman
  • C: Christmas

MY FAVORITES TEAM
  • PG: Flynn
  • SG: Devendorf

Nailed it

Starters: Pearl, Bing, Melo, DC1, Seikley

Bench: Sherm, GMac, Moten, Owens, Wallace, Xmas, Bouie

Final Cut: Warrick

Sherm
Bing
Owens
Melo
Coleman

I know there is no true center but those are the 5 I would pick

I'm not going strictly with the best players. To me, the end-of-the-bench players need to bring defined skills that we could use in specific situations.

PG: Douglas, Pearl, Jason Hart (I could be talked into MCW for the same purpose)
SG: Bing, Kid Kohls
SF: Anthony, Owens, Wallace
PF: Coleman, Wes Johnson
C: Seikaly, Bouie

PG: Sherm, Pearl
SG: Bing, McNamara, Moten
SF: Anthony, Wes, Owens
PF: Coleman, Warrick
C: Seikaly, Christmas

Dave Bing
Lawrence Moten
Derrick Coleman
Bill Smith
Rony Seikaly
Sherman Douglas
Carmelo Anthony
Billy Owens
Rakeem Christmas
Silent G
Pearl Washington
John Wallace

Starters:
PG: Sherm
SG: Moten
SF: Carmelo
PF: Derrick Coleman
C: Etan

Bench:
G Dion
G GMac
Wes
Owens
C Slick Rick the Ruler

A mix of favorites and bests.
Edit: I really want Wallace and Pearl on this list. Dang. Mah. We're going 12 deep! ahahahaha

I don't want to live in a world where a guy can't find room for Gerry McNamara on a GOAT team that includes Donte Greene.

Tough not having Wallace or Kohls. Went with Wes over Wallace because of 3 point shooting which this group lacked some.

In true fanatical fashion I worked on this far too long.

Here is my starting 5 with a brief description of each players roles and why I picked them:

PG- Sherman Douglas
As many have pointed out on this board Sherm could do it all. Score, distribute and defend. Offensively I picked him because he could score when necessary, but more importantly set up his teammates to score.

SG- Andy Rautins
This was a tough choice for me. Initially I went with Eric Devendorf since he shot a similar three point percentage as Andy. However, I don’t know how Devendorf would have handled not being the number one offensive option (and once he wasn’t a starter I don’t feel like he could handle coming off the bench). Rautins is my choice because he was a pure shooter, had enough offensive skills to do some other things without the ball and played excellent defense.

SF- Carmelo Anthony
This seemed like a no brainer, since he was so versatile and hadn’t developed into the one-on-one-while-four-teammates-watch type of player he now is in the NBA. While at SU he fit within the offense well, allowing others to take over games at times and when needed taking over games on his own.

PF- Derrick Coleman
I wanted someone tough inside. DC could rebound and score when necessary and in most situations played within the offense.

C- Etan Thomas
I went for a defensive player here. Thomas scored some when necessary, but I think he could fit in on this roster, because he would be able to handle not scoring and touching the ball every possession.

6th Man- Dion Waiters
I am not sure there has been a more versatile and productive 6th man in the time I have been watching NCAA basketball (granted, I don’t watch many games now other than SU). He also accepted and relished this role.

Bench Players (Subs depending on the situation):

Dave Bing
The only reason he wasn't my SG was because he played before the three point line and I wanted to have a proven three point shooter in my starting lineup.

Hakim Warrick
Hak would be my low post offensive threat off the bench. He didn’t do it much at SU, but I do think he could handle coming off the bench and not being a starter.

Arinze Onuaku
Similar skillset to Thomas, but to me he was a little more polished on the offensive end of the court. He adequately could hold down the middle of the zone, but without the shot blocking ability of Thomas. Together I think he and Thomas would complement each other well.

John Wallace
He was an all-around team player and he could do it all, score, rebound, and defend. I seriously considered choosing Wesley Johnson for this spot, but be “disappeared” for long stretches in games, something that Wallace never seemed to do.

Kueth Duany
Duany would provide a lot of the intangibles you need on a championship team (as he did in real life). He has a lot of basketball skills, but never excelled at a single thing. What he did excel at, and the reason I picked him, was leadership.

James Southerland
This was a tough pick for me. I wanted another three point shooter on the team, but the ones who fit the bill the best wouldn’t fit on a team as bench players. Preston Shumpert came to mind, but he had teammate issues in real life, so why would it be different in my fantasy world. G-Mac was another one I seriously considered, but I don’t think he could play off the bench. After all he was a four year starter at SU and was the number one offensive option for three of his seasons. Scoop Jardine also crossed my mind, not because of his shooting, but to add another ball handler (since I do think that is the weakest part of this team), but I felt like I could do without another true ball handler and needed a pure shooter. That is why I picked James Southerland. Southerland came off the bench for a number of seasons and was very successful doing it. For that reason he was the player I chose.

When selecting this team I tried to take everything into consideration. Too many scorers and team chemistry would suck. Too many stars and team chemistry would suck. This is not even close to my 12 best players in SU history, but I do think these guys together as a team could compete with any team out there.

I'd love to see mcw, rautins, Wes, Coleman and Bouie play zone for a few possessions.

The one guy I'd line to find room for is warrick. I view Andy's SR year as the greatest ever by a shooting guard at cuse...that I've seen play. That was my rule...I had to see them live.
