SU at UConn: (45-98) Mon Mar 23, 6 PM [NCAA 2nd Rd]

Women’s bball is so out of whack. These score/talent discrepancies from the tournament are outrageous. Not great for viewership and the sport.
That’s the thing. I thought the talent disparity issue was actually getting better over the last few years and headed in the right direction, but yeah results like last night, it’s going backwards. As I said, a 9 seed being 37.5 point underdogs in a second round game to a 1 seed is just absurd. Having said that, Syracuse needs to do more in its power to unconditionally support and embrace women’s basketball.

Top 4 seeds in each region get to host a weekend pod.

Sucks for SU that we were an 8/9 when UConn was a 1.

We'd have been better off as a 10 or 11 seed.
That’s the problem. The women’s game has evolved enough to no longer give the top seeds home court advantage. They’re already head and shoulders better than anyone else. It’s time to do what the men do. If they ever want to improve parity, they need to change.

the problem is you would never get people to go watch if they didnt have the pod system. Its a total catch 22. The interest just isnt there and they would end up playing in more than half empty arenas if they were all at neutral sites.

I have listened to 3 morning shows and each one was mocking her. We are a pimple on the world of women's basketball - anyone thinks they are targeting us is insane. Nobody know who she is or who we are.

This is a logi$tic$ issue. Get better and beat someone you shouldn't in the regular season and avoid the 8/9 game. We would have been happier going to Texas and losing by 50? Columbia? LA?

Agree that they could’ve played there way above or below out of Storrs. Not once did she say she was ungrateful to be in the tournament, it’s the opposite after what last season was. When you say nobody knows who she is or who we are, That is the problem! That exists in Syracuse before we even talk about nationally. FLJ is a treasure.

First her take about everybody needing to be more positive about Red, and now saying she/Syracuse is being targeted by being sent to Uconn continuously. She is a bad take machine.
I’ll give you grace that you probably don’t follow the program closely, watch her press conferences in entirety, and read about her story to truly understanding where her takes are coming from. I’ll leave you with this, there is no parlaying this into some bigger opportunity for her, she truly wants to build something special at Syracuse. Being the little sister to UConn is not helping this matter and she is obviously frustrated by that being reminded to her every time she takes a team to the dance. As well as her players that she genuinely loves and are good players that have won a lot of games breaking down emotionally that they can’t compete physically against a UConn team that is filled with WNBA players. This current UConn women team may genuinely be able to put up a better fight against the worst WNBA team than Syracuse did against UConn. But for Syracuse people to turn her back on her even more when she truly doesn’t get the support she deserves (I’m talking more fan support than even financial) it’s truly disappointing.

She wants to build this into something special but complains when she plays a better coach with a better team. Participation trophy mindset.

I like FLJ, she is an intense coach, swears a lot during play, she also let's her emotions get the best of her sometimes. btw, I've been to the ACC tournament a couple of times, to say that people don't travel to watch women's basketball is not correct. There are plenty of teams that have a following with folks that travel to their games.

I have to think that some of the H0T Takes in this thread are from drive by fans who don't spend a lot of time watching the sport. She wasn't wrong with some of what she said, it just wasn't the time or place to do it.

I always enjoy reading posts from posters who don't normally post on certain forums or follow certain SU teams. Congratulations on your second post in this forum in two years.
Congratulations to you aswell CL, for being one of the 10 active people on this forum.

She’s 144% right to be pissed that we always get matched up vs. UConn in the early rounds.

The one time we didn’t - a decade ago -
we faced them in the Finals.

It puts an artificial constraint on how far Cuse women’s hoops can go in the NCAA’s, having to face up against the dominant program every. single. time. in the first weekend.

Or at least - seed Cuse a little higher or lower, so that a potential Huskies matchup doesn’t happen immediately.

Or send us to one of the other regions.

There’s more than 10. Why don’t you actually support the women’s team. It’s been a way better team to watch over the last four years than the men. If the fans and university actually supported the women’s team Coach Jack may not have to complain about being continually sent to UConn. By the way Mike Trico (sp) made the same comments last week about the women being continually sent to UConn to play in the tournament.

I'm curious if they factored the Darius injury in our seeding? She wasn't officially declared out until after the pairings were announced. If that was official before, maybe we could have grabbed a 10 seed instead?

The issue isn't playing Uconn. The issue is fudging the seedings to make them play Uconn.

they could have been anywhere from 7-11 and they were going to get Uconn most of the time.

Hockey and Lax do it as well, but even the 16 seed in hockey has a better chance of winning than most teams do vs Uconn.

The FLJ remark was made out of frustration, and her love for this team. The frustration comes from knowing that as she has stated previously, with better financial support, she would be on more equal footing to competitively recruit in this day and age of NIL. And the first two rounds should be on a neutral court. Personally, in filling out my bracket, I pretty much picked the 1-4 seeds in every bracket. With that being said, it was an ill-advised statement. At some point in this Tournament, she would have to deal with UConn, SC, or UCLA. Those teams are the teams you measure your program progress against. That is the nature of the tournament, beating the teams in your bracket

I don’t know WBB, but I think this is the heart of the matter. It feels pretty artificial to have played UConn at UConn so frequently in the ncaa. It’s against the law of averages.

would't it be great to get players like this who went to HS in NYS, but instead go to UConn

WBB and the NCAA make enough money off this to not be biased. try to get the top 4 seeds some home bias sure. Protect the conference matchups. But after that the small amount of money they saved should not factor in.

Yeah it would be great, if you think Goliath in men's basketball is bad, Goliath in women's basketball is 10x worse.

Of course Coach was frustrated but at the same time there is some truth in her statement. 8/9 seeds are all about the same and committee should be more flexible. Why wasn't Princeton sent to same bracket as us if they sent teams on proximity. What they wanted to see was Crooks vs Strong and that didn't happen.

that is true, but in this years tournament, winning the 8/9 game gets you a #1 seed, and the team and venue would have been different, but playing Scar, UCLA, and maybe even Texas, on their home courts would have been nearly as insurmountable as playing UConn on their home court. It's the nature of woman's basketball. The parity is improving, but currently, there is still an upper echelon. Few upsets in the round of 32 in the #1-4 seeds, for reasons already mentioned above, home court and better players
