SU Coaches Clinic

Great to hear about the WR's and Hunt but is it because the DB's aren't quite there yet or the wr's are stepping up?
The depth at corner is not there and the D was without eskridge. So that is a good question. Again this is just my observation from watching one practice. dont know what players are doing on a day to day basis. I just see a better all around product at the WR position. Not sure how much better we will be, but we will be better. To add on to my observation, Brisley is not just a bubble guy. I see him making plays down the field alot more this year. He looks like a natural slot WR.

how much was this publized to the coaches? i know the coaches i talked to about it had no idea it was happening.

Upperdeck: It wasn't necessarily publicized unless you went to other clinics or events that the coaches were at. Other than that you wouldn't know unless you went to the website. But, I think I need to explain why. This is not an event that's about making money or getting as many coaches as possible. By the time that the insurance is paid for as well as the food and other stuff, I'd be amazed if SU wasn't paying for some portion of the clinic.

This event is about getting local coaches in a room together and talking football. It's not like other clinics you go to where coaches are giving canned presentations that they've given 25 times before. I've been to so many clinics, and for the money and for the experience I cant hesitate to recommend this to everyone, whether you're a varsity or a Modified Coach. It doesn't matter, it's a great experience IMO.

There were four (4) 25 minute sessions where you could go in a classroom with any coach you wanted to. I ended up spending the majority of the time with GM. He opened up by saying what do you guys want to talk about? And then a small group of guys discussed a multitude of things like tempo, keeping practice tempo when you have to have "teaching moments", WR technique things, play development and recognition/progressions and on and on. He had practice and game cut ups to support the questions we were asking. He was very organized.

Obviously he's an intelligent guy, you dont become a high level D-I Coordinator without being one, but he has a way of teaching things that simplifies very complex things, and that's what I took away from him amongst many other minor things that cumulatively will be major in practice. I'll say this, he has a plan. And he's going to go with that plan, he described it in detail. I'm very interested in seeing how it comes together for my own knowledge and because I'm a fan. I'll say this, I have complete confidence in what he's trying to accomplish FWIW (which is nothing ;)).

One other thing I know fans and parents and everybody forgets, these guys are people, just like you and me. And you can learn alot more about somebody in these types of environments. Everybody on this staff, is cordial, receptive and enthusiastic about what they do.

SmilinBob: I think it's a combination of Hunt developing, as well as the WR's and some inexperience within the Secondary. Regardless, Hunt's development is evident. The only way I can describe it is like this. They're getting reps off extremely fast, and during the time they come to the line I watched Hunt do these things on one play:

1) Recognize the defensive alignment and adjust.
2) Make an audible.
3) See Cover 2 over the top.
4) Freeze the Safety by pump faking the underneath route .
5) Unleash a beautifully thrown and timed ball to a West running a Jet up the sidelines that was three steps behind the CB and hit him in stride.

I dont recall seeing this last year, and if I did it was scripted and not on a regular basis. He did this on his own, in a rapid fire session. He is developing. And I'll echo Money3189 thoughts in saying his Mid-Range and Deep Ball are coming along.

A couple other nuggets:

AAM - it never ceases to amaze me how nimble he is for his size. He moves well. Had a one-handed stab on a swing route in which he then turned up field cut back against the grain, worked inside to out and finished the run. It was impressive to watch.

Corey Cooper looks physically impressive, I think it's just a matter of him learning the system.

All of the players were extremely polite and respectful. Walking in with them they'd hold doors for people, please and thank you, yes sir. That's a reflection of the program they're in IMO.

Hunt's motion is compact and the ball has zip when it leaves his hand, moreso than anybody else throwing the bean from what I saw.

I think we hit on 5/7 or 5/8 deep balls (20+ yards) during the team and 7 vs. 7 periods.

In warmups Dixon was routinely booming balls 60-65 yards (50 yarders with his drop in the game situations).

Alryk Perry and Batten look the part of LB's physically.

Like Money said, dont want to comment on injuries or scheme or anything like that.

Thanks Finwad32 great stuff! Interesting note on Alryk Perry a kid picked up very late in the process... If he could turn into a contributor, that says something very positive about the staffs ability to mine the FA field for talent, even late in the game. The two DT's we are bringing in this year are another test of that ability...

Yes Finwad. Clinic set up was remarkable. It allowed us to talk to coaches on a professional level and social level. No one felt uncomfortable asking questions. I sat in Lea and Reed sessions. Very informative and I was allowed to interupt them during the discussion to talk about another topic. They had no issues with that. Im impressed with both of them. Last time I went to a clinic like this was Penn St. BTW. Larry johnson is by far the best speaker Ive heard and learned from

I'm surprised (and pleased) to hear that tidbit on Alryk Perry. He looked small last summer.

Great stuff, just getting back to the board for the first time since around ACCT time (working in sports media during the NCAAs is rough). Almost want to make the trip up for Spring, need football back in my life.
