SU Explores new Medical School

One need not look too far for an example of combined state and private colleges under the umbrella of a single (private) University ... there's one right down (By Edit) 81 (Cornell).

Um, right. Which is why I mentioned that in my post. :)

Yes you did and you didn't stumble on your driving directions like I did. At any rate, tucking a statutory college into a private U is a long process ... with politics involved, as well as logistics, local objections, turf, etc.. Syverud's plan is going to be tested during this process (so far, I like his approach to the Dome situation).

Agreed. Political nightmare of epic proportions. But SUNY needs to make some changes (hell, they need to close or merge some campuses). Since that's unlikely, this is at least a possible step in the right direction.

I forget - is SUNY controlled more by the Governor / Legislature or the Board of Regents?

Good point about SUNY consolidation, which is not only necessary, but timely. This might be one of the reasons the plan has support in the Governor's office.

If Upstate is against it...then I like the idea. Competition never hurt anyone...this would be a nationally competitive program bringing in candidates from all 50 states.

Wonder if you would see any/many medics who use GI Bill support and ultimately end up at SU's "Veteran" medical school.

Are SUNY schools hurting? Geneseo, Binghamton and Stony Brook are turning away great students. Oswego is booming. As college costs continue to spiral, more people are looking to SUNYs

The more I think about it, the more it seems a school that's focused on vets is going to have significant issues with credentialing (assuming all training sites are VA hospitals)

That was my concern upthread. You would know better, but I would guess that, even with a specialty (VA), any medical school would still have to meet all the requirements for staffing, facilities and curriculum. Maybe we should ask BPO and he can "take a poll" to give us more definitive answers.

Why now? Why not 15 years ago? :(

The why is the $500 million that the region is competing for in the Upstate Revitalization Initiative. The CNY region is going to make this a key part of their strategy why they should receive $500 million over the other 6 eligible regions.

Seven regions, three winners of $500M each, and four who get to kick rocks and complain that Albany hates them and loves downstate. Based on the Buffalo billion initiative.

Another unique aspect of the CNY plan is developing an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) center for R&D, policymaking, manufacturing, etc. in CNY.

CNY had better be one of the winners by default. The Mohawk Valley (e.g. Utica) has already received their fair share of financial lactation with the nano industry startup... plus I think there is another major nano investment being announced today for that area. Rochester just received a $600M win last week in the photonics industry. Buffalo was already pledged a billion a couple years back. I have to assume that 2 of the 3 "winners" for this pot of money will be CNY and the Captial region. If we get beat out by the North Country or the southern tier then let's fold up and turn off the lights. CNY needs this just to catch up.

Between the med school and the UAV momentum, the ideas at least seem grounded and have legs. Would also like to see a tourism component as well -- a major attraction for the inner harbor would do well complementing the existing/planned amenities in that area.

It's supposed to be based on the strategic plans and immediate projects/ideas that are submitted, not a "well they already got theirs, it's our turn" but I'm sure there will be a lot of political push and pull. New York City, Long Island, and Buffalo are not eligible for this money so its between Hudson Valley, Capital Region, Northern NY, Mohawk Valley, Central NY, Finger Lakes, and Rochester. The CNY region has been successful being awarded as a winner in three of the last four Regional Economic Development competitions (not the same as the one time URI) so we have that going for us. Progress to date has been slow as so much of that previous funding was state "funny money" in tax credits to entities that couldn't really use them. This $500M is supposedly all cash and has to be used over the next 5 years. Fingers are crossed.

They're not eligible, Buffalo in particular, because they've already "gotten their share".
