I posted this on both boards yesterday but it only shows 3 views so apparently no one opened it up.

I have never heard this compilation before. Some parts are pretty interesting and funny.

Enjoy

That's neat.

Tremendous. LOVE the hiss pop of the vinyl. Adds something a digital version can't.

I got a kick out of seeing the field level shots in Archbold Stadium. I can remember the cheerleaders trying to coax the students into the SY--RA--CUSE cheer. Never worked. Thanks for sharing!

I'd like to see the current cheerleaders just try to get "C-U-S-E" established. Forget the whole SYRA thing.

Great Stuff!

Still believe that the "Saltine Warrior" is a great fight song that should be brought back with new politically correct lyrics.

It is superior to Down the Field.

Make it happen Dan!!!!!

They should do what the Philly fans do - sing the politically re-configured "Saltine Warrior" song and at the end chant "O-R-A-N-G-E ......ORANGE!!!!!"

That would be a great way to celebrate TDs in the Dome.

Great! Never heard the crew song before. And besides the oldtime SY-RA-CUSE cheer, you can here the old "gender-biased" version of the alma mater.

That's actually mash-up, right?

First two songs (Down the Field and Saltine Warrior) were in "SU Medley" which we used to play eons ago when I was in the SUMB. But instead of the chant we'd play 'Bill Orange' as the 3rd song. Love the chorus to that one:

Get in the game to win, boys,
Ev'ry blessed mother's son of you;
Stand firm along the line,boys,
Watch the ball, this time it's going through.
Last night the sun set orange,
Omen ever sure and true,
Get in the game and win , boys,
Old Syracuse, she calls to you!
Then in your clip after the chant is the old Fanfare opening to SUMB pre-game shows leading into 'Down the Field' (in fact that sounds exactly like version on the SUMB CD from my sophomore year, 1992).

Then back to the 50s Glee Club stuff.

Thanks for posting, cool stuff.

I've never thought the Saltine Warrior lyrics were politically incorrect at all...

In the days of old, when knights were bold
Every city had its warrior man.
In the days of new, when fights are few
You will view them from a big grandstand.
In our college town one has great renown
If the game of football he should play.
With his pig-skin ball he is cheered by all,
He's the Saltine Warrior of today.
Chorus:
The Saltine Warrior is a bold, bad man,
And his weapon is a pigskin ball,
When on the field he takes a good, firm stand,
He's the hero of large and small.
He will rush toward the goal with might and main
His opponents all fight, but they fight in vain,
Because the Saltine Warrior is a bold, bad man,
And victorious over all.
I mean unless the gender-specific "man" is offensive?
I think the un-PC thing was the Indian mascot, which of course would never return for obvious reasons. It's a shame that SU didn't have a better replacement plan for Big Chief Bill Orange back in the late 70s. I know they briefly tried a Roman Gladiator, which is really what should have stuck (I mean it's "Syracuse", duh!).
Oh well.

I agree completely.

My presumption has been that the song was discarded because of the name "Saltine Warrior."

Change the name to something like the "Mighty Otto" or the "Might Orange" and all will be well.

Well the SUMB played the song into the mid-90s. I know because I played it.

Not sure what's become of it since then.

After every first down, the student section has gotten better and most now will do the S-Y-R-A-C-U-S-E... GO!

I played it too. I've got it on the 1987 cassette tape, which I keep saying I have to get converted before the tape breaks. My kids and wife know it too, because it's been played so many times in our car over the years ... the only place left where we had a tape player. That was until the 2000 Odyssey with tape player bit the dust three months ago.

Ironically, "Down Down the Field" contains an native American reference and "The Saltine Warrior" does not. It was the amscxot of the same name that got the song banned.

On a scale of '10' with the Notre Dame Victory march being a '10', I'd give "Down Down the Field" about a 6 or 7 and "The Saltine Warrior" an 8. When I was a kid, it was "The Saltine Warrior" that was always played over SU's highlights.

Thanks! I've been looking for a recording of the "Saltine Warrior " for years.
