JB said the basketball team doesn't give out awards like "most improved, "most valuable" but it was decided that Baye personified what being an SU basketball player was all about. Selflessness, no complaining, great work ethic , phenomenal teammate and the willingness to do anything to help his team win were just some of the characteristics Baye exemplified over his 4 years here. .
Sorry, I know this isn't a great picture but it was dark when Baye came back with his award. Thanks to Joyce he was at our table along with Michael Gbinije (who is also a great kid). It says" The Baye Moussa Keita Award. Awarded to the men's basketball player who best represents the program in the classroom, on campus and in the community and who displays unselfish commitment to the team." Baye said he was shocked and so honored. He had a smile ear-to-ear.
CJ Fair also spoke and was so gracious and thankful to the staff, fans , university and community for all the support he's been given over the 4 years he's been here. He said that the staff had faith in him with JB offering him sight unseen a scholarship even after he tore his ACL in his junior year and all the big time programs who had been relentlessly recruiting him, suddenly disappeared. He said SU never left him and the staff never wavered in their faith in him. He said he will be forever grateful and their confidence restored his own confidence in himself. He said how special a year its been and how Coach was so right about what would and could happen if he returned for his senior year.
The recurring message was that this years' team accomplishments aren't finished by a long shot and there is more of the story to be written. Tomcat, Joyce, Bees, Jake etc will be able to add more and much more eloquently than I did. Great night with a packed house of over 900 sending off the seniors and SU to the tournaments. We have a very special program. Go Orange.
