SU Playing in Players Era NIL Tournament in Vegas in 2025

I think there are four pods. Two pods have 4 teams each. Two pods have 5 teams each.
I just double checked. You're right about the number of pods, but wrong about how many teams are in them. 3 pods have 4 teams each, and one pod (ours) has 6 teams. It breaks down as follows:

Pod 1
Rutgers, Tenessee, Notre Dame, Houston, Syracuse, Kansas.

Pod 2
Creighton, Baylor, Iowa State, Saint Johns.

Pod 3
Auburn, Oregon, SDSU, Michigan.

Pod 4
Gonzaga, Alabama, UNLV, Maryland.

You are right. Maybe they are write off Notre Dame, Rutgers and us.
 
Apologies if this was already noted in the thread earlier, but I just saw that Darryn Peterson of Kansas is missing another game this weekend. Only wishing him to have a speedy recovery, but that is notable if he were potentially unable to play against SU in Vegas...

I hope he's able to play. I want to see how we legitimately match up with KU and Houston

I saw you on the Locked on Syracuse podcast last week. Thought you did a nice job and I'll keep an eye out for your appearances. Jackson Holzer does a good job too.

Darryn Peterson has played in just two of Kansas's four games this season while dealing with hamstring issues that, strangely, one of the most moneyed programs in the country can't seem to figure out.

This isn't some Big East game back in the day where we had 5 Big East teams in the top 25 just trading the #1 spot or Duke just getting that #1 ranking all year because it's Duke.

This is Houston who lost in the Natty game last year and in the Final 4 2 years ago. The uptick in competition is as high as it can possibly be. Since covid they are 163-24. #1 ranking and #1 in kenpom today. This is not a Quad 1 game for us, this should be Quad -10 game.

I don't think anyone thinks Houston is bad, but we can give them a game. They lost their d1 exhibition game this year, and, like us, haven't played anyone good yet (that ends today). Last year, they started the season 3-4 or 4-3. If we had to pick a time to play them, it's now.

I just put on the Houston/Auburn games after the Giants game and Bills games ended. So far I saw some heavyweight dunks.
 
I think in five team division. The scenario that two teams with 2-0 finish is possible. Also there is another scenario that all five teams finished with 1-1. The 18 team tournament is so odd. Should be 16.
its not a tournament...its just a chance for a bunch of teams to play each other in the same location...3rd game will be decided by tv and margin of victory. not a tournament

I agree. this Houston team is mostly new ...lost almost all of their best players...still a very good team...but not the juggernaut they have been. wont finish the season ranked #1

Houston looked as advertised. It was 8 on 5 for auburn… 33 free throws to 12. Their front court fouled out. Happy houston won a close one. Wouldn’t want to play them with an L already on their resume.
 

All 18 teams will play on Monday and Tuesday at either the Mandalay Bay’s Michelob Ultra Arena or the MGM Grand’s Garden Arena.

Fourteen teams will wrap up play on Wednesday, while the four bottom teams will be forced to spend an extra day in Vegas and play on Thanksgiving.

Here are the basics of the tournament’s format and scheduling criteria:

The 18-team field is split into two pods. Ten teams will play at the MGM Grand Garden Arena and the eight will play at the Michelob Ultra Arena.

Syracuse is in the MGM Grand pod along with Rutgers, Tennessee, Kansas, Notre Dame, Houston, Gonzaga, Alabama, UNLV and Maryland.

The teams in the Michelob Ultra Arena pod are Michigan, Creighton, Oregon, Baylor, St. John’s, Iowa State, Auburn and San Diego State.

The team that finishes in first place in each pod will play each other in the overall Players Era championship game and the team that finishes in second place in each pod will play in the third-place game. Both of those games will be played Wednesday.

The teams in these games will not be re-seeded to avoid conference conflicts or repeating regular season games (like Alabama vs. St. John’s or Houston vs. Auburn). That’s because additional money is at stake in the championship and third-place games.

The teams that finish ranked Nos. 5-14 after two rounds will also play on Wednesday.

There are some minor differences in how these matchups will be determined.

Games between teams from the same conference will be avoided. The tournament guarantees that.

The tournament will also attempt, but not guarantee, to avoid matchups between non-conference teams that play during the season. (Like Syracuse vs. Tennessee, which is part of the ACC/SEC Challenge next week).

The bottom four teams will have to stay in Vegas and play on Thursday.

Those games will be played at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. (Vegas time) in the Michelob Ultra Arena.
 
Phenomenal event with the team, coaches and staff last night. Best event I’ve ever been at. The players were all so much fun to talk to. We have great student athletes representing us.

I was privileged to be able to be there and won’t report anything else other than how nice all of the players were.

That was very nice of Syracuse to have a welcome event for fans and players. I would assume that some family members are there to support the team.

I'm sure word from the shoot around will trickle down at some point. I guess we want Donnie to be healthy all season, so if it means that they take precautions now, so be it. It definitely hurt last season, and he is a so much better player this year. Hopefully he is not snake bit.
