This ongoing compilation has been appearing piecemeal in other threads, but it seems like it deserves its own thread.

Syracuse University sports top 25 all-time greats: No. 7 Carmelo Anthony (video)

What are the guesses for the missing pieces within the top 10? Jim Brown will doubtless be #1, but what about 3, 5, 6, 8, 9 and 10?

Floyd Little will be there some place ... as will Dave Bing ... and Don McPherson sure deserves to be in the top 10 after almost winning a Heisman (which he earned on the field). And what about Vic Hanson ... who is the only person in both the Basketball and Football Halls of Fame?

Then there's Pearl and Ben Schwartzwalder and Roy Simmons who built the lacrosse program and John Mackey and Joe Morris and Daryl Johnston and Dwight Freeney and all the rest.

Any guesses as to who will fill out the Top 10?

Boeheim? G.Gait? Glenn Sekunda?

If Melo is #7 and DC is #13, the basketball players aren't getting a lot of love in the top 20. Gotta have Douglas, Pearl and Bing. Moten. Owens. Maybe GMac. Maybe Warrick. Maybe Seikaly.

For coaches, JAB and Schwartzwalder have to be there. Roy Simmons, Roy Jr, Desko and Coach Mac will all also appear. Dollard should and won't. Buck O'Neill should and won't. Cox should and won't.

For lacrosse, SU has 21 people in the lacrosse hall of fame. The history is insane. Who gets in? Oren Lyons is surely one. Kotz, McCabe, Marechek, Curry, the Powell brothers are all deserving.

For football, Joe Alexander and Floyd Little were 3 time AAs. Tim Green, Donnie Mac, McNabb, Harrison, Csonka, Hanson, Ringo, Mackey and Jim Brown are all hall of famers and Freeney will be in halls of fame down the road too.

Other sports: Jim Nance should get in for football and wrestling (2 time heavyweight NC; edit; he did!). Gene Mills too (2 more NCs). Myer Prinstein won 4 Olympic gold medals in track and belongs. Maybe Tom Darling in crew (made 3 Olympic teams, a silver medal in the Olympics and led SU to a gold finish in the IRA).

Hard to limit this list to just 25.

It's interesting that the exact criteria is "The 25 Most Noteworthy People in the History of Syracuse Athletics."

Using that EXACT criteria, whomever came up with the idea for the Carrier Dome is automatically number two on the list behind The Great Jim Brown.

That genius inspiration to build the Dome - whomever had it - single-handedly altered the fortunes of the football program, created a 40-year basketball recruiting advantage and transformed the fan experience for millions of SU fans. They also achieved something difficult architecturally. The Dome is iconic in the college sports landscape -- its own brand, instantly recognizable inside and out, to fans nationwide.

We watch sports for the people on the field so The Great Jim Brown must be number one but the "most noteworthy" person is whomever came up with the Dome.

I have to think the Powell brothers are top 10 without a doubt. That family's contributions to the lacrosse program cannot be measured.

Barry Baker is one of the top 25 mythical Syracuse players of all time.

john mackey is in the hall of fame. joe morris ? marvin harrison ? lawrence moten ? dick mcpherson ?

he's a great coattail rider. Zilch zero in 8 years.

JB built the program from a regional power to national one and routinely excels with less talent. Desko has struggled adjusting to the parity era. Looking at this year's results and with their uptick in recruiting perhaps the lax team is emerging from a down period. As long as Simmons is ahead of Desko I can live with the list.

Only 2 coaches have more rings than Desko - Tierney and Slugger. IMO, deserving of a spot on the list. But I agree, if ranked, Sim should be higher. Took the program to the next level.

he took the baton with a rather sizable lead and now we seem to be playing catchup. not a great lap time coach.

well JB has 41 skeeball games under his belt to win that one stuffed bear. maybe his arm is getting a little tired .
