Syracuse 61st in 4yr Recruiting Rankings

I'm not a fan of rankings, but Anomander's point that if you aren't bringing in enough studs to afford yourself to miss on a few, then you absolutely need the right scheme/plan in place. That stat about no 5 stars in the Super Bowl is fine, but I also saw this yesterday...

@ClayTravisBGID
19 of past 20 national champion football teams have had at least two top ten classes before they won title: http://www.foxsports.com/college-football/outkick-the-coverage/top-ten-signing-classes-are-necessary-for-national-titles-020515…

I wouldn't even try and compare numbers from 4 years ago. Right now, just looking at the ACC rankings is the focus. SU needs to try and get into the middle of that group to continue to move up within the conference.

40's and 50's actually.

I forget who said it but I recall that someone (Coach Mac maybe) said that Syracuse Football wouldn't make it back into the top 25 until we could get better talent and more consistent talent in the trenches, both OL and DL.

I think we actually upgraded that talent immensely with this class. The OL and DL are where programs in college and NFL franchises are built. That being said, I wish we could get Adkins back as OL coach, I thought that he was a great coach.

we were finish in the avg is less of a deal than are we getting better players.. we could be getting significantly better players and closing the gap without moving up the rankings.. or more players could be getting reviewed on the lower end which is where we usually are getting our pool which means we could be getting better players but our rivals are too and we are not moving up.

the only know is the top 10-20 are still getting the cream.

#54 the year before Marrone took over, #103 his first year.

Regardless of overall class rankings, it makes a huge difference whether we land a top QB, WR, RB, DE, LB and S. Ishmael is an example, as is Blair in this class. We have yet to hit gold in the Marrone-Shafer era at QB and RB.

I doubt SU will ever move far into the top 40s in overall recruiting - too many programs have more natural advantages. And we can't win on schemes without better talent in the key roles.

I only checked the 2 main sites we were at and one was 56, 52, 48, 48. The other was 49, 51, 46, 51. Thus I said 40's and 50's. Not sure where you're getting a 103.

Sure those schools may have had a bad record this year, but a bunch of them have been top 10 teams in the past 2 or 3 years, which is covered in those rankings. Hell Auburn, ND, and LSU played in the BCS Championship games, and Texas A&M, So Carolina, Stanford, and Oklahoma all played in a BCS game last year. Out of that group only Tennessee, and Arkansas have struggled.

and those records in the past 2 or 3 years would apply to the 3-4 years of classes prior to that. their rankings today imo would apply to the classes over the last 2-3 years in that chart.

there is no trend that i see. look at all the lower teams in that chart and their records.

Do we really think that a 10 point change in team rankings has any correlation to results? I just don't think evaluations are that accurate.

We seem to be recruiting a lot of solid players who, if they are to be studs, will have to be developed while on campus. Only problem is we're in a conference where everyone has solid recruiting classes and most are bringing in a handful of players each year who are studs before they even step foot on campus.

What were our recruiting rankings when we were a powerhouse?

That was before this Internet thing went bonkers so I suspect the methodology and information flow was much less.

Marrone's first class was ranked #102

The Cusian clearly said we were "#54 the year before Marrone took over and #103 his first year".

You then asked where he was getting a #103 from, I am telling you where.

And since I was only talking about GRob and not Marrone, that sentence can be read 103 grobs first year. Why even mention Marrone? My point stands with chakka who I responded to about GRob.

I stand corrected by Bees.

Anyway if I can say that I was concerned that in Shafer first 2 classes he left the NE-NY-NJ corridor that Marrone was building up. Regardless, I still like what I see Shafer & crew are doing even more so than what Marrone was did. With the diversity of states that are prime recruiting grounds (NE, NJ, PA, OH, GA, FL, IL) I'm encouraged for the future.

Now the coaches need to coach and coach up the players. Go Cuse!

I was meaning Marrones first year - and I was using 247 composite - like the OP.

Not a big deal.

I'm hopeful that the recruiting is in fact getting better. I wonder though. We haven't had a lot of winning lately. Each of our last three winning seasons were by the skin of our teeth. Even 2012 when we were good we didn't have much margin for error. Maybe that's what classes in the 40s and 50s get you.

Shafer's first two classes rate as follows:

2014

Rivals - 51st
Scout - 53rd
247 - 49th

Rough Average around 50

2015

Rivals - 62nd
Scout - 49th
247 - 54th

Rough Average around 55

I refuse to include ESPN because they compile their team rankings differently including subjective factors that the other sites don't include. It's not apples to apples.

Definitely room for improvement. I'd like to see us in the 30's consistently.

Well, we lost about a half dozen good commits when Cool Kid left. Not too bad a drop off, all things considered.

This was exactly my point with the OP. We tend to overrate our classes, just because we become so familiar with them.

Huh? No we didn't. Cool Kid didn't do jack we lost the kids because they were either not going to qualify, or dropped because we didn't think they were good enough.

Works for me, I was just informing you where he thought our #103 ranking was.

So really if you wanted to use these rankings and say that our recruiting hasn't really changed in 15 years, that would be a tough argument to poke holes in no? It seemed to me that GROB always brought in a few really good guys but the bottom half always tailed off, seems we are stronger from top to bottom but who knows anymore. I always say people waiting for even a top. 20 class at Syracuse will be waiting a long long time, ain't happening

I figured as much. I haven't been too concerned with our rank in recruiting. As long as we can put a productive product on the field. Look at our defense last year. It was chuck full of underrated recruits and played well against good teams but the offense lacked firepower and plaques with injuries. I believe we are going in the right direction. I know many will argue against my point and tell me how blind I am too to the poor coaching but time will tell. Keeping the faith.
