It has to be. We don't get the recruits here to warrant guys playing young. Sustainable success means having a year-after-year parade of juniors and seniors getting the majority of the snaps.

So why does no one develop in this program?

It's a double edged sword that one of the things we can offer is the chance to play early, but in order to make good on that promise, we end up limiting the same depth we need to build to succeed long term.

I think it’s because the staff has never had to do it. They haven’t stayed anywhere long enough. Key hole in dinos resume is having stayed long enough to develop their own talent and recruit rosters for the long term.
They do a lot of things right in big picture strategy that can take roughly equal talent and do well by just being a little smarter (simplifying things, smart in fourth down, smart on pace and space)

But no scheme fixes this kind of recruiting and misfortune

I hate being the guy that says we just need to recruit because you could say that about any terrible coach. The next class will fix it! It'd be nice to have a head coach who was a really good position coach but those guys tend to be dinosaurs

I think the staff can be graded easily. When Dino was hired we thought he wouldn’t be here long because he would be poached. We were okay with that because the team would be turned around. Well he is still here and it’s a dumpster fire. Ripcord needs to be pulled next year if he doesn’t get this turned around and go get the next up and coming trend. Rinse wash and repeat until they get it right.

What about 10-3 three years in from where the program was when he picked it up doesn't equal "getting it right".

This year is a dumpster fire. Last year even with the OL issues if Devito is 100% they probably beat NCSt and Pitt. Last year they under performed by a couple of wins.

The issue is the interior DL talent/scheme match, and OL due for the most part to injury.
75% of the time they are getting beat in the trenches this year. Means you can't get off the field on defense and stay on the field on offense. It begins and ends there and no team can function if you are getting whipped like that on both sides of the ball.

If your OL is good, at least you can get in shoot outs, if the DL is good at least you can try to keep in close and win in the 4th, when both are bad and add in all the youth on defense and true frosh average recruit QB you get this season.

Underperformed by a couple of wins?!? We were preseason 2nd best team in the ACC, and slotted to go to the Orange Bowl...

We can blame injuries on the OL sucking, but what’s the excuse for the DL? Year 5 and we got nothing there, it seems.

It's weird, last year you could tell it was "gap year" between Shafer OL recruits graduating and Dino's OL recruits becoming the starters. It looks like next year could be a "gap year" for the DL

talent/scheme mismatch. They are playing one position closer to the ball than they should. With a true nose Williams is your three tech and black is on the weak side.

We constantly rank at the bottom of ACC recruiting and the staff doesn’t know how to develop players.

The few positions we should be able to recruit at a mediocre ACC level are QB and WR given the Dome and plethora of southern away games.

OL may always be a position where we will have to “make it work”... development, S&C and transfer portal, but Dino has failed, spectacularly, at landing QBs and WRs... forget all his other bs & failings... this is where we should expect our coaches to be able to sell us (P5, indoor fast track, southern away games) and not end up with a pocket passer, backed up by a TE and a D2 QB throwing to Taj friggin Harris as the best WR... IN YEAR 5.

FOH with that.

OL/DL is always going to be a struggle. Our best bet is to hit the transfer portal every year for grown men and develop the select few we recruit that (size/frame) have any potential. Dino and staff don’t seem capable of the latter.

If Syracuse wants to be competitive in the ACC, then it has to be a development program. At almost every school, linemen are development projects. All linemen should be redshirted and it should be very rare that an o-lineman starts before his 3rd year (redshirt soph.). Also, players from the Northeast are rarely as developed as players form the South as football is more of an all year sport in the South. Thus, there can be more upside to a kid from the Northeast who has not been developed in high school.

Speed is speed and it is harder to develop, but you can bulk up speedy guys.

Finally, the lack of QB depth this year is hard to understand. The transfer portal is full of QBs that can contribute immediately.

being a development program means you need a spring and summer conditioning/S&C. Neither of which really happened this year...
