Syracuse University says it will build connection between Carrier Dome and Barnes Center

Let's go right to the article:

It refers to the Carrier Dome renovation as the “Stadium Project” and says the changes will create “a transformed stadium experience.”

It also notes that the connection will change the footprint of the current building, which one lawyer with naming rights experience has said could be an important factor in potential negotiations between Syracuse and Carrier.

Thanks OX. Completely overlooked that tidbit.

Mr. Sala, tear down this wall.

(this one, right here, on the east side of the Dome, just tear it down please).

So, could this rendering that was leaked awhile ago be the ultimate end goal of what they're trying to create here? (minus the roof obviously). And at the end of that article it said this "gift comes just days before plans to officially launch the largest fundraising campaign in the school’s history". Fundraiser for what? This project or the football operations center?

The annual Boost the Cuse or whatever starts soon...that’s for all aspects of academics and sports at Syracuse

I think they do fundraising campaigns every few years so I didn't read into it. Maybe some of that will be dedicated to these improvements, but when I look at that rendering they only have to demo the lower portion of the walls. It shouldn't take heaven and earth to find dollars for this. Now if they want to do a full atrium build-out that's a different story. Maybe Boeheim can talk Weitsman into helping SU get this done, seeing as he's basically throwing his money everywhere at this point.

Will this cut off the direct access road along the east side of the dome from near the Ernie Davis statue to the south entrances like Gate A, disabled entrance etc? Just trying to envision the details.

They can hack out parts of the South and West walls while they're at it, including above grade at the top of the "Carrier" panel. Concourses need light and space all around the facility.

It will, but it might be open to the general public for much of the time (like a lot of academic buildings are).

I don’t think this project of connecting the buildings will include expanding the concourses.

That rendering looks like its from the New Yorker in 1914.

The style looks a little dated but I like the idea of expanding the concourses and opening them up to light as well. And creating a big atrium exposed to natural light.

If they could open things up on the east concourse like this but go all the way across from the stadium to the Barnes building, so that entire area was enclosed in glass or EFTE and open, that would be a fantastic improvement. A real game changer.

Ya I like the idea, natural light is desperately needed in the dome as at times you can't tell if its 1pm or 1am in there. Being able to take in some natural light or even air for an early fall game or a late spring lax game would be a real nice touch. I was just hoping for a better overall drawing/rendering, it just looks like something out of a football program from 1920 or a painting from little house on the prairie.

Pete Sala was just on 9WSYR and stated the new connection between the Barnes and dome will triple the size of the concourse on this side of the dome. It will have new restrooms and food options.
Which 100 and 300 sections are on the east wing? I expect those will become more popular as long as we can rediscover an offense.

Major fundraising for all campus projects including sports. The last major fundraising campaign that ended in 2012 had a goal of $1 billion. If this is the biggest one in school history, then $2 billion? Usually it's launched with a number of large naming gifts by trustees like the Mirons' and Lally's to get the ball rolling. There may be others on the academic side too that I'm not aware of.

they're trying to promote a wholesome, family atmosphere. What’s so upsetting about little house on the prairie values? Let’s hang Norman Rockwell while we’re at it.

I think it’s the most congested entering the dome. During a football game it’s no more congested than anyplace else and during a basketball game there is no congestion. I wonder if the new restrooms and food options will actually be in the Barnes center.

Was just told that they expect that there will be additional food options and restrooms that aren’t necessarily in the Barnes center. Now I’m thinking maybe a food court type thing? Just spit balling now.

Yeah that man works more than any human I have ever met. Great family they are. He knows what is needed and he kills him self for it. I don’t know what he makes and don’t care he is underpaid. He will do a great job without a doubt.

I don’t see how the eastern concourse could be the most congested. It is barely even used for basketball, which compromise most of the events at the Dome.

Still. any improvement is appreciated. Trying to guess where tripling the size of the concourse would put the new exterior wall. There is a row of shoppes/offices/meeting rooms all along the eastern concourse between the concourse and the exterior wall. I am guessing that they will finally recapture that wasted space as part of this. Guessing that would double the size of the concourse. I guess it could triple it but I don’t think so.

So it sounds like the new concourse will probably extend into the area between the stadium and the Barnes Center. Not sure if the new restrooms and food options will cut into the new triple the size concourse. I hope not but suspect this is what will happen. If they add more space along that eastern border for food and rest room options, it would be a lot better. Although if they do that, opening up the area to the sun using glass or ETFE would not make sense, which is unfortunate.

There are no restrooms behind the end zone sections and little in the way of food options. Adding these would be great, but the side that needs them even worse is the western concourse.

I like the fact that it's opposite the basketball wing. I have to think they will want to do a similar facelift to the west wing at some point in the future seeing that it is more heavily utilized Nov-March. There's a lot more room to expand on the west side. Did they not already do some leveling there for one of the crane pads? Moving that amount of dirt is very expensive, so the groundwork has been laid for future construction. Shovel ready.

Wasn't that where the problem was before the Clemson game? Everyone coming in from the Quad 10 minutes before kickoff.
