Cuse will be back. Having been a fan since the 60's i can tell you this without hesitation.

The last few years have been brutal. Being a lame duck in the Big East really hurt recruiting. A lack of an IPF and facilities that were sub standard contributed to the fall. Doug took over a program that was as bad as it gets. What Doug accomplished was amazing. He with a huge helping hand from Shafer brought this program back to respectability. Winning on the road last year at Missu was as good as it gets. Better than the bowl win in my opinion. Showed me we were on our way back big time. Unfortunately good fortune smiled on Doug and he left. Losing him was bad enough but with Doug taking the entire staff at the last minute he to a certain extent damaged what he has worked so hard to build. Still i will always be thankful for him doing the heavy lifting and bringing us back from the dead.

Going forward it is going to take sometime still the foundation and tools are in place. Syracuse fans have always supported a winner and they will again. The destruction of the team against FSU, Clemson and GT killed it for many of the fence sitters.

Win or not tomorrow we will be back. I truly believe that Shafer is the right guy for this program. He is a blue collar guy for a blue collar town. As to the O McDonald will either get it right over the next two years or he will be gone. I think that as far as the rest of the staff goes we are in good hands.

Recruiting is only going to get better. Being in the ACC is huge and it is just starting to pay dividends. This class is shaping up to be our best in years and they are only going to get better. ACC exposure is just starting and ACC dollars are going to make a huge difference. And yes the IPF will be built. Bank it.

Next year and going forward we are going to see a more friendly schedule. No more need to play a brutal schedule to make up for a lack of competition and dollars from the big east. I know that many complain about the NYC games but you have to remember the enviornment in which those games were scheduled. At the time it was brilliant. It ensured that we remained in the National spot light and it was a great pay day also helped with recruiting. Good move at the time and still a good move.

So with the exposure of finacial security of the ACC, A staff that will only get better, Recruiting on the up swing, a more friendly schedule, and yes the IPF the future looks good.

On this a day of thanks lets give thanks that we landed in the ACC and that we know that better days for our beloved program are ahead.

Go Orange Beat BC!!

Happy Thanksgiving to all on this board especially those who work so hard to make it such a great community for all of us.

Mucho agreement there.

And people need to remember, to move out the 5-7, 8-5 doldrums doesn't require nothing but 4-5 star recruits. Top 30 offense last year with one four star senior, and he wasn' t the featured WR and this has been a times this year as good a defense as there has been hear in years, and it's not full of 4stars. Like Shafer said in the latest article, need a handful of those kind of guys to move up to the next tier.

The target should be getting to the point where the team is working at 6-6, 9-4 range, which can be done with a combination of a kinder schedule and offense and defense that are consistently 50th and above.

Although I appreciate your optimism, and mostly agree with your underlying premise, I do not fully believe that SU "will be back" simply my virtue of things you mention (staff getting better, financial gains of ACC, recruiting on upswing, facilities, etc.).

There is one thing, and only one thing, that needs to happen for SU to be "back" and that is winning on the field. There is no debating that fact that the things you mention should help with that objective, but their existence guarantees nothing in the long term. You have to win and you have to win now. Take this season, the definition for success, IMO, was getting to bowl. Falling short of that mark will deny the kids and the program the opportunity for continued development through the extra practice, make recruiting more difficult, and further erode the national perception of the program. But, beating BC allows the program to continue to build on Marrone's momentum - with a very long way yet to go.

It is really that simple. Losing this year (i.e. not making a bowl) will put tremendous pressure on the staff and players to win next year. There is already an impact on attendance. Not making it to a bowl again next year will sink the program to the bottom of the ACC, both in terms of national perception and the ability to attract enough high end talent.

BC is a must win to begin to move in the direction you are suggesting. It's also a must win, in my mind anyway, to provide further evidence that this staff is not in way over their collective heads.

Beat BC Saturday!

In fairness everything in the OP is what leads to winning

With that said beating BC this Saturday is huge for the program.

Big time. Cant blow this opportunity. 15 practices, one more game, exposure, experience. A must win for this program indeed

Last year was hardly brutal.
Agreed. This is Thanksgiving Day. I'm thankful that the last four years have pumped hope into this program and that we're not doing facepalms every Saturday. Yes, we want to be past the point of sweating out bowl eligibility, but these last four years (five including this current one) have hardly been brutal.
