Before they pulled on their post-game gear, packed their knapsacks and headed out into the afternoon sunshine, SU players were asked about their intentions for next season. Kaleb Joseph, Trevor Cooney, Tyler Roberson and B.J. Johnson each said they would return to SU in 2015-16. (Ron Patterson and Chino Obokoh left the locker room before they could be asked.) Gbinije, who will graduate from SU this spring, characterized his return as "more than likely."

I don't know, we'll see regarding most of them. Hope we see G and friends return.

Either way, we will bring back a lot of talent and bring in some new promise. All good things.

Very true. The two most likely to be asked to leave were not around to be askedaddle anyways.

We shall see how it all plays out eventually. I'd imagine around the end of NCAAs we will know if anyone is leaving, as anticipated.

Yeah, it'll be wait and see with pretty much all the guys over the next month or so. Even though they commented about staying today, you never know if priorities or minds will change.

A lot of people talk about Chino and Bryant being good friends, in that Chino won't leave. The only way they'd play together is if two kids left anyhow, so it is very unlikely. I don't think Bryant's coming or going has any real impact on Chino, but Chino effects whether or not Bryant could come here.

G leaving would be, let's say, a bad decision.

If he stays, he's got a real shot a getting drafted. If he leaves, there is no chance. worse decisions have been made, for sure, but this has bad idea jeans written all over it.

Better off as a free agent than drafted. Easier to find the best fit.

I thought the school voluntarily imposed a reduction of one scholly for next year, so we are capped at 12, no?

That was in the e-mail from Gross yesterday iirc.

Bryant is gone. Because he has not signed an LOI, his doing so would trigger the scholarship reductions next year.

Here are the numbers:

10 scholarship players on this year's roster
plus 4 incoming freshmen
equals 14
minus Christmas
equals 13
plus Bryant
equals 14

With a 10 scholarship limit, that means 4 would have to go. Which is not going to happen.
I'm not disputing your post...but several other posters have a different take on 2015/16 feeling that SU has the option to start the 10 ship limit the following year(2016/17) and can have 13 or at least 12 ships next year. That would mean only 1 or 2 current players would not be able to return if Bryant was added. Can you post a link to where you are getting your info on the ship situation next year?

From the University:

"In addition to these important changes, the University already self-imposed a series of significant penalties that include:

  • A one-year ban from 2014-15 post-season competition for men’s basketball;
  • A voluntary, two-year term of probation for the Department of Athletics;
  • Elimination of one scholarship for men’s basketball for the 2015-2016 season;
  • Elimination of a men’s basketball off-campus recruiter for six months during 2015-2016;
  • Vacation of 24 men’s basketball wins (15 in 2004-05 and 9 in 2011-12); and
  • Vacation of 11 football wins: (6 in 2004-05; 1 in 2005-06; 4 in 2006-07).
Getting Bryant would mean someone unexpected leaves I believe.

If SU can't sign any more players beyond what we have. Hopefully all the current roster stays. Even Obokoh who is the least skilled of the group may be needed for depth. Let's hope all these kids work their tails off this summer and come back ready to really contribute instead of being fringe players.

But the NCAA decision supersedes that, pending appeal.

This was what we said we would do, the NCAA imposed different penalties but accepted our one year tournament ban. Therefore their is nothing scholorship wise for next year because they applied their 3 scholarship loss x 4 years, so that is what we will follow and that will start the following year because we already have 4 guys signed to letter of intents.

Their may be a way to sneak Bryant in because if we appeal and then sign Bryant at that time before that goes into effect he would technically be grandfathered in like the other 4 players that are committed. Otherwise we aren't getting Bryant. But again, no scholarship reduction starting next year since the NCAA did not accept that punishment and instead applied their own scholarship sanctions

Kids leave for different reasons all the time, look at Devendorf and Paul Harris. Kids don't just leave because of the NBA, some are just ready to move on and they can still make good money overseas. G already has his degree and is 23 years old i believe, he may be ready to call it a career in college. Hell, he may even decide to transfer which I think is less likely but he could do a 5th year transfer and play next year.

Self imposed 1 scholarship vs the NCAA 3 makes it almost a no brainer that it ends up being 2.

We self-imposed vacating 24 wins. The NCAA said "NOPE, it's 108"

We self-imposed a 1 scholarship reduction. The NCAA said "NOPE, it's 12"

The only self-imposed penalty they accepted was the one year ban.

That is correct. The NCAA only accepted our post season ban from what was self imposed. Everything else that we self imposed should be non binding.

Fair point, if we assume his only goal is pro hoops. But only if.

Bad time to ask that, especially when you're talking about transferring. If BJ/Buss were intent on transferring they wouldn't say it right now. Means nothing.

And the two who have the most to lose by transferring. Obokoh already has lost a year eligibility, can't afford to sit out and lose another year and Paterson is already 22, sitiing out a year makes him 25 when he graduates.

Transferring doesn't necessarily put off graduation, it just means they'd have to sit out a year. And If they aren't truly pro prospects age doesn't Matter.

understand but if Obokoh wants to play, then sitting another year then getting only 2 to play hurts. Even if you don't play in the pros, do you want to wait that long. its easy for people to say that so-n-so should transfer or be asked to leave without thinking about what the kid wants.
