T-shirt fans

I really don’t like the term. My question is, how do you all feel about someone like me adopting Syracuse as my team? I’m from upstate NY (near Albany) and went to a community college. I have always liked college football much more than the NFL, and being Sabbatarian, I don’t watch sports on Sundays.

I’ve been following college football for about 20 years but never had a team, which makes it less exciting. I've finally decided to adopt Syracuse as my own due to geographical proximity. Adopt as in go all in, this is my team now for better or worse.

The thing is, I have heard numerous people say (not here) that you shouldn’t wear Syracuse gear if you never went there, shouldn’t say “we” when talking about the team etc. Is this really true, is following college football really that exclusive? I know down south almost everyone follows their team, most of which are people who never attended or work for the college they root for. Is this taboo in the north?
I would bet that a minimum of 75% of the fans in attendance at the Dome for any given football or basketball game did not go to Syracuse. Particularly in basketball, Syracuse is basically the team that everybody follows in a region that doesn’t have any pro sports teams.

Random note but it amazes me the SU BOOKSTORE still prices as high as they do. You would think that with the obvious online competition they would have to be at least in the ballpark of reason. But I have seen hoodies for $100-125 there.

Welcome aboard!

Whoever said this to you...they're not worth your time, and likely not a real fan.

A few years back I was walking up to the Dome for FSU/SU. Some drunk FSU girl who was probably early 20's was asking my friends and me if we attended SU. We all told her we were not alums and she asked us something like..."Why are you going to the game? If you didn't go to the school, then why are you rooting for them?" I asked this fine young woman if she thought everyone that attended FSU games went to FSU. The quizzical look on her face said it all. People like that aren't worth your breath.

Welcome to the Orange fandom! Be prepared - It's a wild ride and they don't call em the Cardiac Cuse for nothin'.
Truth be told about 90% of college fans never went to the school they root for, especially the unique situation of Syracuse being the "Pro" team of the area with Buffalo and NYC being a bit of a hike... and also maybe the 60k a year tuition.
Nonetheless, I don't think anyone here would say any of that nonsense!
Again, welcome aboard.
GO 'Cuse!

As an alum I say buy the shirt and root for the Orange. My parents didn't graduate from SU and they bled Orange. My Brother graduated from a different school and he bled Orange.

Truthfully, I always mentally separate my love for our sports teams from my pride in the education I received at SU. My undergrad and grad years were meaningful to my life and career, while being an SU fan since age 8 (and I'm "mature" now) has been meaningful emotionally.

Truthfully, only one of my friends from SU stayed a fan of the teams after graduation. You will be a fan for life.

Totally going off on a tangent but the term "tee shirt fan" caused me to remember something. Years ago, I worked with a very vocal Penn State fan. He had attended a small DIII school but was from the Philly area and a lifelong PSU fan. We had a football bet on the SU/PSU game with the loser giving the winner a tee shirt from the loser's school. Makes no sense in hindsight but that was the bet. Don McPherson, my second favorite player after Ernie, came out throwing and the rest is history.

When the guy gave me the PSU shirt, I loudly proclaimed to our friends who had gathered for the "ceremony" that I would never wear it but I would use it to clean the slush from my headlights in the winter.

The guy got really upset and would never bet with me again...

Good times, good times.

I grew up in the Syracuse area. My dad got me hooked on SU sports, neither of us were students. I recall the Louie-Bowie show, the Dome.being built, SU taking down #1 Nebraska, many lacrosse championships.

Having served in the Air Force and moved around a lot, SU sports was a way of keeping up with my hometown, in addition to my family. I say you are a fan of whom you choose. Just don't be a fair weather fan changing teams when a new champion is crowned.

P.S. I wear my SU gear and see SU fans everywhere. We're not a cult, just your average family of dysfunction spread across the globe.

I'm a T shirt fan too. The haters and judgers will hate and judge regardless. If you go all in that is awesome. I'll let you in a secret...if not for the non-alumni fans who buy tickets and watch them on TV, Syracuse would be in the Patriot League right now. The alumni that move back to the BOS-WASH in an overwhelmingly large part do not come back to Syracuse for games.

For clarification it’s not other Cuse fans who have said this in my experience, but graduates from other schools. It’s certainly rampant in online CFB discussions as well. But to be fair every Cuse fan I’ve interacted with has been very chill and welcoming.
Very few Cuse Alumni hold that attitude because deep down they know it is fans from Upstate NY that fill up the Dome.

I think of the Orange as a regional identity that surpasses just being a University.

If you live in CNY, you’re already an Orange fan. You just may not know it yet.

Like Western New Yorkers with the Bills
Utica area too...every person I met from Utica in Florida and Texas will tell you they are from Syracuse and follow the Orange. Albany is much more of a blend of fans there...Syracuse support drops off pretty good east of Little Falls. We love all the Cuse from the Capital Region... pound it @Pudge ;-)

Oh hangout a bit more on this board, grab a beer, especially game day threads and find out how unchill about 30% of this board can get. Have fun with it!
